Reginald Stoneham was born in 1879 and died March 1942. He was a popular accompanist and recording artist in the early part of the 20th century. In 1867 Frenchman, Joseph Monier patented reinforced concrete horticultural troughs. In 1873 this process was extended to iron reinforced bridges with the first bridge built in 1875. In Australia, Sir John Monash of Monash and Anderson company, originally built 8 Monier bridges in Bendigo all single arch except Weeroona Ave., which was a double arch. In 2000 major renovation works were carried out on the Sunbury Bendigo Rail line to accommodate new and larger carriages which were going to replace older trains. This item was in a cabin trunk that belonged to Henry Frencham which also included his Petition to Parliament and the findings from the Parliamentary enquiry into his and other claims to be the first to find gold at Bendigo. A stereoscope is a device for viewing a stereoscopic pair of separate images, depicting left-eye and right-eye views of the same scene, as a single three-dimensional image.A dark brown wooden half centimetre thick base with curved edges varying in width from eight centimetres, twelve centimetre, seven centimetres and ten centimetres. A half centimetre by half centimetre piece of wood with a grove in it is glued to one end. On the other end an oval shaped half centimetre thick, twelve centimetres long and five centimetres wide, has two three centimetre diametre glass lenses in it and is attached by a small single hinge so it can be folded against the other piece for storage or raised to right angles to look through the lenses at an image in the groove at the end of the base piece.steroscope, henry frencham

Springtime, 1905 was Railway picnic time. And what a time it was - with packed trains from the metropolis and country towns, and Bendigo, thronged with the crowds of gay holiday-makers. Souvenir ticket belongs to rear Mrs. A. Bolitho, 5 Webster Street, Bendigo, issued by Electric Supply Coy. Of Victoria Ltd., Bendigo Tramways. Railway Picnic September 16, 1905. The ticket belong to Mrs Bolitho's father, the late Mr J H P Ellis, who lived in McIntyre Street. Post card size, printed in sepia on cream, bears photographs of the power house, engine room, a tram (we presume one of the first models) and the boiler room. Down the sides are listed cemetery, railway station, Rodney St, Charing Cross, through to California Gully Bridge and Eaglehawk. The fare was 2d. On the back a Beehive advertisement. 'Half-Century With Trams' is a history as remembered by Mr W J Evans of Mt. Korong Road, California Gully. 'Boisterous' is a history as remembered by Mr W Bolton of the firm of Bolton Bros. recalled the early picnics as 'boisterous' affairs. 'riff-raff' used to gather at Spencer St Station, arriving in Bendigo-after having spent the night drinking. The picnicers certainly had a right royal time in those early days. Railway Picnic was also boronia time, Mr Bolton said - and bunches of fragrant West Australian borania were sold on the streets. Bolton Bros always printed the tram tickets in Bendigo in those early years. A report in the 'Bendigonian' of the 1903 Railway Picnic period told that 20 special trams came to Bendigo on Saturday morning, September 15, 1903. In this photograph, taken in 1929, the Gray family are pictured outside the courts where their father was a caretaker. The family are Edna, Yvonne, Alyce and Edie. The father was Claude and the mother was Edna. Also a letter to the editor from Norm Gray, Eaglehawk: the group of six people standing to the extreme right are all brothers and sisters of the Gray family. The person standing slightly apart and to the left of the group was my uncle Claude. The other 5 siblings in the group are Edna, Douglas (my father), Edith, Yvonne and Alyce. My father, third from the left, was 10-11 years old at the time. The father of the children was William Henry Gray and he was the caretaker of the Bendigo Law courts. Information provided to the Bendigo Historical Society by Rohan Moresi: Rohan 'grew up on a farm near Buckrabanyule. The bat belonged to Rohan and his brothers, Grant and Alistair. At the age of twelve in early December of 1977, my father took my brothers and myself to the Queen Elizabeth Oval in Bendigo to watch a match of the newly created World Series Cricket being played. West Indies versus World XI. OI took the one cricket bat we owned and a market pen, along with me. During the course of the match I gathered all the signatures I could from players as they left the field after batting, as they sat in the stands waiting for their turn to bat, and when they were fielding close to the boundary. I remember Clive Lloyd, who was sitting in the stands when I approached him, expressing some good natured scepticism that the signatures would remain permanently on the bat as he was signing it, due to the tyupe of marker pen used. I also recall Tony Greig not stopping to sign it as he left the field after batting. I'm sure he had other more pressing issues on his mind at the time. When we returned home my father painted a type of a lacquer over each of the signatures in an attempt to ensure some sort of permanency. As it was the only cricket bat my brothers and I had, we continued to use it in our backyard games. Which goes a long way in explaining its current state. My brothers and I all left the farm in the early 1980's and I took the cricket bat with me. Since then it has remained in my possession up until now. I'm very happy to see it returned to the place of its origin, and for it to be kept in perpetuity at the Bendigo Hisgtorical Society, as it is part of the twentieth century history of Bendigo.
