Black and white print from the State Library of Victoria, June 1999 of a horse tram crossing the intersection of Sturt and Lydiard Street Ballarat c1890. Tram is travelling east to Grenville St. on the south side of Sturt St. (wrong side these days). Has the Ballarat Post Office building in the background with buildings on the north east side of Sturt St. as well. Has a number of horse drawn cabs in photo and women in white clothing holding umbrellas over their head indicating a hot day. In the right hand side of the photo is the statue of poet Robert Burns. Has number "530" in the bottom left hand corner of photograph. State Library Multimedia Source Catalogue gives the photographer as Charles Rudd, 1849 to 1901, date of photo 1889-1891. Copy made Oct. 2001 for the "gold, Gold GOLD" temporary exhibition - colour laser print onto card, with Velcro dots on rear. Stored in box D1 (Display Box) 02/2003. 1297 - Booklet with red heavy card cover and 24 pages inside and a four page supplement glued into rear cover giving details of the by-laws operating for the SEC tramways in Ballarat and Bendigo. Gives details of the definitions, fares and charges, sale of tickets, regulating number of passengers, stopping places, nuisances, smoking, dangerous goods, luggage and goods, general matters and fares broken into adult fares for each section and Children's fares and Pensioners' Concession fares for both Ballarat and Bendigo. Note - introduced decimal currency into the fares as well as pence. Document number on front cover "TYE 1-270". This by-law replaced or revoked all previous by-laws and amendments. Came in effect 1/10/1965 with a fare rise. Received Governor In Council approval on 24/8/1965. These fares have been amended in pencil for Ballarat. The amendment pasted into the rear of the booklet is dated 2nd August. 1966 and came into effect on 1/9/1966. 1297.1 - ditto, but actual used copy by D. J. Everett - see Reg. Item 2292 for details of SEC Ballarat Employee. On page one or title sheet, has an additional amendment pasted in - dated 14/1/1969 giving details of fare increases in Ballarat and Bendigo to come into effect 14/1/1969. Single sheet printed both side. See also Reg items 66 and 281 for this sheet of paper by itself. Item added 2/3/2003. 1297.2 - booklet as above for 1297, but without supplements - in as printed condition 8/1965. 1297.3 - as for 1297 with 1966 and two number 1969 supplements pasted into the book. One 1969 supplement at the front and additional at the rear. 1966 supplement pasted into the rear of the book. Has BTPS Catalogue Numbers 207, 208 and 209 written onto the front of the booklet. Catalogue No. 206 of the J. G. Brill Co. of Philadelphia PA, titled "Brill Trucks" on front cover and "City and Interurban Trucks" on page 1. Comprises: Card cover very light grey on outside, grey inside which is a larger size than that of the rest of the book. Has the names of the J. G. Brill associated companies (American Car Company of St. Louis, G. C. Kuhlman Car Co. of Cleveland Ohio, Wason Manufacturing Company of Springfield, Massachusetts and Compagnie J. G. Brill, Paris France) as well. On the inside of the front cover and on the inside back cover are patterns involving the Brill logo. To the printed catalogue is a matching out 4pp again with the same Brill logos. This sheet is the same size as the text pages. Forty page printed text on a heavy gloss manila colour art paper. Front cover gives details of Brill's office addresses, and agents, including the Australasian agent - Noyes Brothers. Page 3 gives an introduction to the quality of Brill trucks and page 39 gives an index to the various trucks and components. Each truck type has a photograph, parts list and dimension details. Trucks covered are: Radiax, 21E, 22, 22E, 27E, 27F, 27G, 27MCB, 39E, 50E. Equipment detailed are the Half-Ball brake hanger, oil retaining center bearing, standard journal (axle) box, solid forged side frames and axle data. Yields information about the condition of the ESCo tram fleet at the time of the SEC takeover of the operations their appearance, the reconstruction work and trackwork to rehabilitate the system. Demonstrates an important era of the Ballarat Tramways through the SEC preparing an album of photographs. The completeness of the record adds to the significance.Photo Album - comprising folded manila card covers, 11 photo sheets each with two, one with three black and white photos. Has three metal - steel fold back clips holding the sheets together. Folded so that the metal clips are not exposed on the outside. Has the title "Photographs of Ballarat Tramways Rolling Stock & Track Reconditioning Works". Album contains 23 photos, glued to the manila sheets - assembled by the SEC. All SEC photos except as noted below. Each of the photographs have been separately registered, as shown in the table below. Scanned images made of photos.
