This document is a review of Legacy operations for 1987. It highlights areas of Legacy operations that could be improved upon, and makes suggestions/recomendations on how to achieve these goals. For example - Paper No 1. Recruiting Korea, Malaya, Vietnam Legatees. Paper No 2 Retention of Korea, Malaya, Vietnam Legatees. Example 2. Paper No 5. Widows Assistance to Legatees, widows helping other widows in need eg. home/hospital visits, bereavement calls. Example 3. Paper 7a. HDCC Planning For the Future - 12th April 1986. How Legacy may be able to assist handicapped/disabled children and the parent caring for the child. Nine papers were presented for this review plus appendices.As Legatee numbers dwindle the thoughts behind the review are how to maintain the relevance and assistance of Legacy into the future. It was thought that a time span of three years projecting into the future was a suitable time frame. It is likely to be Somers Camp with a type of camp kitchen behind the men. In the early years of Legacy organised outings to the property of Legacy founder, Legatee Stan Savige, who had a place in Balnarring close to the beach. Permanent camp buildings were built in 1930, and with an association with Lord Somers (Governor of Victoria) it was called Somers Camp. A cake decorated to look like the Shrine of Remembrance. The event is the annual Fete in 1993. The cake was entered into the Melbourne Show and shows a lot of skill. It was used as a raffle prize at the 1993 fete held at Legacy House (see the article from The Answer). The article says: The 31st annual Club Fete was held at Legacy House and a highlight of the event was a raffle to win a spectacular cake depicting the Shrine of Remembrance. The cake, made by Mrs Audrey McMaster (friend of a former Junior Legatee) was a 1993 prize-winning cake at the Royal Melbourne Show. Black and white photo of the residents at Holmbush. It was one of the residences that was run by Melbourne Legacy for junior legatees. The residences were run by Melbourne Legacy to take care of children whose fathers had been servicemen, and who may have been left orphans, or whose mother may have been unable to care for them herself. The year is not known but it is approximately 1947, and was in an album which was a collection of photos taken in the 1940s and 1950s. The label with the photo says it was taken by Legatee Harry Rigby. Holmbush at 1267 Burke road, was one of the properties that Legacy used for Junior Legatees. It was purchased 1942. Camp Premises Agreement and negotiations mentioned on page 3. Melbourne Legacy provides camps for junior legatees. The camps gave the children an opportunity of a summer beach holiday with other Legacy children. It started with camps on the property of Legacy founder, Legatee Stan Savige, who had a place in Balnarring, close to the beach. Permanent camp buildings were built in 1930. These documents relate to those buildings. Legacy Somers Camps continued intermittently at Stan's property until it was decided in 1951 to make other arrangements for holidays. Including two other camps in the Somers area: Lord Somers Camp and the Somers School Camp (owned by the Education Department). Camps provided for junior Legatees have been very important from early in Legacy's history. In the 1920s Legacy started camps at Stan Savige's property at Balnarring. By the 1930s a permanent camp kitchen and building had been built at Somers Camp. The order of service of the event at the MCG attended by the Queen on 25 February 1954. It was held by the ex-servicemen and ex-servicewomen of Victoria and the War Bereaved. Legacy played a part. A Legacy ward presented the Queen with a bouquet of flowers and the junior legatees performed for her by forming the letters 'E.R.' on the ground. This was organised by the instructors of the girls and boys classes including Miss Enez Domec Carre. It was the official commemorative document of the occasion. The Queen visited the MCG twice during her visit to Melbourne, once was this exservicemen rally when Legacy children attended, and a second time when it was for all school children. Pathe News footage of the ex-servicemen rally show a two legacy children presenting a posy (see photo above). An article in the Legacy Newsletter in July 1954 featured the event and says Beverley Emsley and Trevor Rees were the children presenting the bouquet and they were accompanied by an escort of: Cam Secombe, Gordon Spong, Dan Craig, Lawrence Challis, Tony Minogue, Elaine Turner, Marie Hunt, Margaret Paltridge, Glennis Foder, and Judith Bishop. The newspaper article for the children's rally said "Legacy wards Brenda Mutimer, 11, of Princes Hill Central school, presented a posy to the Queen and John Barker, 14, of Box Hill High school handed the Duke two Australian animal books for Prince Charles and Princess Anne." An article in the Sun about the donation of the Changi violin to Legacy in 1982. It mentions that the violin was thrown over the fence at Changi prison and Mr Roy Arnel played it for the 3 and half years he was in Changi. When the war ended he went around the camp getting concert party members and friends to sign it. He died in January 1982 and his wife Netta contacted Legacy who had it restored by Roger Lewis. He said many of the parts were not original but had been made for it in prison. The notation H35 in red pen shows that it was part of the archive project that was trying to capture the history of Legacy. The text of the letter to President E J Larkin says: Dear Ed, I attach a press cutting which is self explanatory except that the violin has been given to me on behalf of Legacy by one of many widows - Mrs Arnel. I have discussed with 'Kem' Kemsley and others what we should do with this interesting relic. Kem has endorsed my fear that if it is sent to Canberra no-one will ever see it. The prospective War Museum in Victoria will not be ready for some years and could not handle it. I suggest that is be displayed 'pro?' at Legacy House until it could be passed to the Victorian War Museum. Both Mrs Arnel and Kem agree with this suggestion. I should be glad to make a display cabinet if Legacy agrees to the above suggestion. I shall be glad if you will return the cutting to me in due course. Long coffee coloured wool lace evening gown with long sleeves and short train. According to the donor (see correspondence in supp. file), this gown was made from Australian wool woven in Bradford and made up in Paris. Legacy have many programs to send young junior legatees on activities, camps and outings. One photo shows children and mothers watching a JL getting a present from Santa in December 2002. Another 2 photos from the same roll of film were a Legacy Leadership Group preparing food at a BBQ. It was stored with other photos of Junior Legatees from the 1980s and 1990s. A speech by Legatee Bill Rogers describing the work of Legacy to the Dandenong Probus Club on 6th October 2014. It provides a snapshot of statistics and work done by Legacy at the time. It mentions 49 clubs in Australia, helping 90,000 widows and around 1,020 dependants. The document is a record of Legatee Crosbie and his visits to widows and families under the care of Melbourne Legacy. Legatee Crosbie gave over 40 years service to Melbourne Legacy (Footscray/Sunshine branch). Total widows and families visited 166. Between 1959 and 1999 it is estimated Legatee Crosbie visited each widow 4-5 times per year between 1959-1999. Legatee Crosbie demostrated outstanding service in the care and interest taken by him in his service to Legacy and those that needed help. An example of a Legatee's badge. These badges were issued to all Legatees to show their name. The number 41 appears to be Legatee Alsope's membership number, which shows that initially members kept track of the order in which they were accepted into Legacy. In the early years of Legacy, membership was restricted to a limited number of members and to those that had skills and abilities that were required. A copy of the Anzac Day Address at the Anzac Commemoration Ceremony for Students in 1989 which was subsequently published in the Legacy Bulletin. Also a copy of the Media Release published by Legacy to promote the event. The ceremony provides a valuable opportunity for students to gain an appreciation of the Anzac spirit, the significance of the Shrine and the meaning of Anzac Day. The ceremony is usually attended by the Governor of Victoria, however, in 1990 the guest making the address was Commodore J.S. A list of servicemen that were submitted for inclusion on the Junior Legacy Honour Roll. However the document mentions this list is of those 'for whom there was no "master card" or concerning whose entitlement to entry on the Roll there is some doubt'. There is a column for 'Here enter any known details'. The final Honour Roll lists junior legatees that served overseas in the armed forces, initially World War Two, and displayed in cabinets in Legacy House. The purple type implies it was made with a renostat form of printing so was a copy of the original document. The final page has a note to return the form to Junior Legacy. A letter to the President of Melbourne Legacy from a representative of a sub-committee. The pencil mark on top of first page could imply it came from Legatee Stan Savige. Date is not known, the first section refers to a resolution of the Board of Management in 1930. That resolution was 'That members of the Club make every effort to influence trade towards Returned Soldiers in business, particularly fellow members, and accept every opportunity at this juncture to carry this into effect.' The rest of the report is a discussion on the impact of this resolution and how it can be made effective in the working of the Legacy spirit. It is possible the report is incomplete as it ends abruptly on page 5. The notation H12 in red pen shows that it was part of the archive project that was trying to capture the history of Legacy. A document that shows a resolution of the Board of Management in 1930 and it's impact and application being examined by a sub-committee.
