Photograph, The Old Mill Road at Sunbury
John Eadie, a miller from Perthshire in Scotland, established a water-driven flour mill on the banks of the Jacksons Creek downstream from the Macedon Street crossing in 1861. He also built a weir and water-race to ensure there was plenty of water to drive the mill. The mill produced flour until the early years of the twentieth century. In 1914 the large shell and the iron roofing were removed to aid the war effort. The weir can still be seen but the ruins of the mill are the only evidence of its early existence.Milling was one of Sunbury's early industries in the early days of European settlement. A copy of an old non-digital black and white photograph of a lady driving a small flock of sheep past a blue stone building, which has a pitched corrugated iron roof. The photograph has a border on three of its sides with the caption below the image. john eadie, sunbury flour mill., flour production -

The Rabbit Canning Factory was established on land that was part of the Rupertswood estate, near the present site of Sunbury Secondary College. Tins of rabbit meat produced at the factory were sold on the local and overseas markets. .The venture to can rabbit meat was seen as a lucrative move to try and manage the multitude of rabbits that had been introduced into Australia in the early days of European settlement.A digital coloured photograph of a coloured label that was used on tins of rabbit meat.Rupertswood Rabbit Canning Factory Sunburyrabbits, labels, rabbit canning factory, sunbury -

Book, Jill Sebire, As I remember-- : memories of life in the Wandin district, 2006
Beenak Road, Wandin Hall, the Stringybark Creek, Clements' shop, Wandin Yallock State School... all names that spark vivid memories for anyone who has lived in or around Wandin in Victoria's Yarra Valley. Jill Sebire invited a wide cross-section of 'locals' to share their memories of community and family life. The result is a rich and entertaining group of personal stories. This is not a formal history, though it covers many of the milestones of the community's growth since European settlement in the 1860s. Instead, it highlights the events, people and places that have stayed fresh in the writers' minds. 'As I Remember ..' ensures that these memories can be enjoyed into the future. Anyone who has lived in a small community will recognise many of the characters and activities. For those who have a connection with the Wandin district. 'As I Remember...' will bring back the sights and sounds of Saturday night dances, the annual trip to the beach, the Easter sports at the Wandin Recreation Ground, fruit-picking, football and cricket matches, and perhaps even the night the Rechabite Hall burnt down.(back cover)non-fictionBeenak Road, Wandin Hall, the Stringybark Creek, Clements' shop, Wandin Yallock State School... all names that spark vivid memories for anyone who has lived in or around Wandin in Victoria's Yarra Valley. Henry John (Jack) Holmes of Ascot was the eldest son of Henry Smerdon and Edith (nee Pickford) Holmes and brother to William Smerdon [Bill], David Coghill and Elizabeth (m Chatham) On his return from serving in WW2, Jack with his father's help took up a Soldier Settler option and settled at Derrinallum on a portion of Mout Elephant. The holding was named "Launchley Park". Soldiers, like Jack with their families, helped swell the numbers in the district and aided the growth in the town and the services it could provide.Three photographs. .1) Black and white photograph of Henry John (Jack) Holmes from Ascot and then Derinallum .2) and .3) Jack Holmes. jack holmes, chatham-holmes collection, henry smerdon holmes, derrinallum, western desert ww2, soldier settlement, mount elephant -

Document - Documents, History of the Coghill Family
History of the Coghill Family from the 1700s.Typed and handwritten papers relating to the Coghill Family. Part ot the handwritten history "The Coghill Family - 13-9-40 Statement by Mr Henry Holmes of Essendon" includes the following: (Page 1) "The original Captain Coghill owned Glendaruel and Glendonald Stations (the homestead of the latter was Andrew Munro's original home.) He had five sons and two daughters ... William Coghill Jnr, a son of Captain Coghill married Miss Catherine Dorothy Holmes. They had no family and they adopted William and Henry Holmes, their nephews, who were the sons of Edward Carter Holmes, brother of Mrs William Coghill Jnr. (Page 2 - does not run on from page1) "The family, and descendants of Edward Carter Holmes, via the William Holmes lineage, lived at "Sauchiburn" Ascot, Vic. The property, fronting what was to become known as Lesters Road, was sold by the family in the 1980's. The namesake of Lesters Road, Mrs Helen Lester (nee Coghill), had also descended from the original Coghill settlers. During my 1960 - 1970 childhood in the area, the Lesters lived opposite "Sauchieburn" on a property called "Burnside". In 1950 a stone cairn commemorating the original Coghill settlers had been sited on the roadside common between both properties by descendants of the Coghill Holmes family. https://victoriancollections.net.au/items/5b0e196821ea69108c477463. The Lester property was subsequently purchased by another Edward Carter Holmes descendant, Graeme Spittle from "Mount Cavern" Ascot, and David Glenn and Chris Canning https://lambley.com.au/visit/ I believe descendants via my mother's, Elizabeth Chatham (nee Holmes), lineage continue to farm and /or reside in the adjacent Ascot vicinity on the "Launchley", "Gleno" and "Hazeldean" properties. Interestingly, "Hazeldean" had been originally owned by Robert Reid and his wife Adelaide Helen Reid (nee Holmes). Adelaide and Catherine Coghill (nee Holmes) were sisters."
