This instrument was used by Dr Fritz Duras (1896-1965), who moved to Australia from Germany in 1937. As his father was Jewish, Duras was forced to leave Germany, and came to Australia to take up a post as director of physical education at Melbourne University. This instrument was part of a collection of instruments given to his son-in-law, Dr Michael Kloss, who was an obstetrician. Dr Kloss subsequently had it engraved and used it in his own practice, before donating the item to the College. Steel packing forceps. The forceps resemble a pair of scissors in style, with a curved end section. The prongs at each end of the forceps have been flatted and are ridged for grip. The number '314' is engraved on both sides of the inner aspect of the forceps. The initial 'E' is engraved on one side of the inner aspect of the forceps. This folder has been used to hold music sheets at St. John’s Presbyterian Church in Warrnambool. The folder would have been funded by the businesses advertising in the folder. St. John’s Presbyterian Church was designed by Andrew Kerr and opened for service in 1875. It was destroyed by fire in 1920 and rebuilt to a similar style. This folder is of interest as a memento of St. John’s Presbyterian Church in the mid 20th century. It also gives us information on some Warrnambool businesses at the time. This is a cardboard folder of four pages to hold music. It has space on the third page to write notes. The other three pages contain 21 advertisements for local Warrnambool businesses pasted on to the folder. The folder is blue and the printed material is in red and dark blue print on a light blue background. There are red and blue borders around each advertisement and some advertisements have illustrated material. This vase would have been used to hold five small flowers or fronds and would have been a decorative item on a dining table or mantelpiece. Today a vase holding one or a small number of flowers is called a specimen vase and the style of these tends to be less decorative than the item described here. This item has no known local provenance but is retained as an example of a household item from the past.This is a white china vase with a central pillar representing the trunk of a tree and (originally) four pillars branching out from the main pillar to represent the branches of a tree. One of these pillars is now missing. The china stems holding the branch columns have embossed flowers and fronds.
