Dr. Ian Stephen MacLeod Murphy (studied at Melbourne University) was a Surgeon Lieutenant on the destroyer S.S. Napier during WW11. Pieces of shrapnel hit Dr. Murphy on the head and he was saved by his tin helmet. He retired to Emerald in 1947 after running a successful medical practice in Hampton, with the intention of breeding turkeys. But Emerald and the surrounding districts had no doctor, so for the next 34 years, the well loved Dr. Murphy provided medical care, working 7 days a week and travelling all over the hills making house calls in all types of weather. Many families couldn't afford his services, and they didn't receive an account or if they did pay, the cheques were not cashed. Often payment was rendered in the form of fruit and vegetables. He was awarded the British Empire Medal in 1977 for devotion to the health of the community. The Civilian Service Medal 1939 - 1945 was established in 1994 by the Australian Government. It recognizes the service of civilians who served in Australia during World War 11, in organisations that were subject to military-like arrangements and conditions of service, or arduous circumstances, in support of the war effort. The original medal is missing in the presentation box. This is the twenty fourth catalogue of trees and it contains fruit trees, nut trees, berries and some ornamental trees. Carl Nobelius wrote in his General Remarks that he had one million trees to sell, clean, healthy and pest free. The nurseries were 250 acres in extent and contained two and a half million trees in various stages. His nurseries were at Emerald, Railway Siding and his office half a mile from Emerald Railway Station. He imported new varieties from overseas and the nursery was the largest in the Southern Hemisphere, employing 80 people between 1903 and 1930.Green Catalogue 1915 of Fruit Trees, also Elms, Oaks, Planes, Poplars and other Deciduous and Ornamental Trees. Methodist services began in late 1893 in the bush, near the end of the present Silvan Reservoir. The seats were split rails and the pulpit a fallen log with a sapling rail. Then a miner's bark hut became available in on the Recreation Ground.
