This item was worn by Marjorie Burton during summer holidays in Croyde,a village on the west-facing coastline of North Devon, England. Marjorie Burton ( nee Whiteman), born 12 June, in Birmingham, England came to Orbost in 1995. In England she did office work – typing, shorthand and secretarial work - in accountants’ offices and also trained as a comptometrist with Burroughs in London. She came from middle-class working church-going family. Her mother was a milliner who made mostl of Marjorie’s clothes, hats and outfits. Marjorie was married in 1938 to a salesman who later became a mechanic in the R.A.F. during WW11. Also called a vintage romper today, the playsuit was a cover-up worn outdoors – either at the beach, in the backyard to catch some sun or for sportswear, generally over swimsuits at the beach or pool, They were so comfortable women often wore them at home too, without swimsuits. Playsuits were usually made of cotton, although they could also be found in rayon. They were brightly colored, in reds, greens, yellows and blues. Floral and Hawaiian prints were popular towards the end of the decade. This item is an example of an item of women's clothing popular in the mid 20th century. A two piece lady's playsuit. It is yellow with black patterns - stylised flowers . The top is a bra top with a hook and eye closing. This 1891 document contains the information on the Will and Probate of John Gould, an engineer from Russells Creek. No information has been found on John Gould except that he died in October 1890 at the age of 67. The solicitor, William Ardlie was a well-known Warrnambool lawyer, commencing a practice in 1865 and continuing well into the 20th century making him at the time one of the longest-serving lawyers in the British Empire. Tait collection: item 10 of 62This document is of interest in that it includes information on a resident of Russells Creek in the Warrnambool area, and also the lawyer concerned is William Ardlie, one of the best-known identities in Warrnambool in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.This is an 1891 piece of parchment folded in half to give four pages of written material. This material is handwritten in black ink. A seal of the Supreme Court of the Colony of Victoria is attached with a green ribbon. The document is somewhat discoloured. ‘In the Supreme Court of the Colony of Victoria in the probate jurisdiction in the Will of John Gould, late of Russells Creek near Warrnambool in the Colony of Victoria, Engineer, deceased, Probate. The Victorian Government took control of power generation in 1921, forming the State Electricity Commission (SEC). Construction approval on a grand scheme to build five power stations with a combined capacity of 289 megawatts was received in 1938, and the Clover Power Station was completed by 1945. The original scheme was dramatically pruned after World War II and only two more power stations were built. The Junction Dam and Clover Dam Power Station, stages of the Kiewa Hydro-Electric Scheme, were needed to meet the increased power demands of the wartime industry in Victoria. Clover added 26 megawatts to the grid. Junction Dam was completed and ready to hold water by September 1943, but was emptied in December 1943 and not filled again until May 1944. This tool is used to clamp and hold pieces of timber together during the process of joining or compressing two pieces of timber together. The first block is stationary and attached to the end of the base while the second block moves with the turning of a long screw. This item was originally made to put around a farm or herd animal to enable it to be identified and found if it strayed. Horses, cows, goats and oxen were the animals most commonly given neck bells in Australia as a way of identifying and finding cattle particularly in areas where prpoerties were unfenced or when droving large herds of mixed cattle. Drovers often marked these bells as a way of identifying which cattle belonged to them. Some of these bells from the 1860's onwards were imported to Australia and some were manufactured locally. The cow bell in various sizes is often still produced to sell to tourists, particularly those in Europe. Many of these souvenir bells contain some form of art work. Although this item has no known local provenance it is retained as an early example of the bells placed around animals’ necks to stop them from straying. This is a piece of metal welded to form a cover or a bell container with a bottom opening to hold a metal clapper which is held in place by a metal ring. The top has a metal handle. This tool is one of several tools in a collection that is believed to have belonged to the Warrnambool carpenter and businessman, Henry Phillips. English-born Henry Phillips (1821-1896) came to Australia with his wife Elizabeth in 1849. They lived for some time in Port Fairy. In 1865 he formed a partnership with Christopher Beattie and established the Warrnambool undertaking business of Beattie and Phillips. This business continued on after the deaths of the founders and lasted until the year 2000. In Warrnambool Henry Phillips was involved in the management of the Mechanics Institute.This item is of interest as a good example of a vintage tool and as a memento of the Warrnambool carpenter and businessman, Henry Phillips. This is a boat-shaped wooden plane tool. Part of the top of the body has been gouged out and a metal blade inserted. Maurice MONIGATTI No 3914 enlisted in the AIF on 31.7.1915 aged 20 years 2 months in the 12th reinforcements 5th Batt. Embarked for Egypt 23.11.1915, hospitalised 25.1.1916 with Mumps, rejoined unit 9.2.1916, WIA 25.7.1916 GSW to Chest and Arm, rejoin unit 6.8.1916, reported missing 3.3.1917. German records dated 4.6.1917 reported him captured at Thilloy on 2.3.1917 and he was imprisoned at Gefangenen lager Limburg A/Lahn Germany. Maurice arrived back in England on 19.12.1918. He was given leave and decided to make it longer and was let of a charge of AWL. He became the Australian Open Cornet Champion by the age of eighteen. A year later, Frank conducted the City of Ballarat Band, and later the Ballarat Soldiers’ Memorial Band. He formed the Frank Wright Frisco Band and Frank Wright and his Coliseum Orchestra. These bands won many South Street awards, and Frank as conductor won many awards in the Australian Band Championship contest. In 1933 Frank Wright sailed to England to conduct the famous St Hilda’s Band and was later appointed Musical Director of the London County Council, where he organized many amazing concerts in parks, in and around the London district. He was made Professor of Brass and Military Band Scoring and conducted at the Guildhall of Music and Drama. Frank was often invited to adjudicate Brass Band Championships around Europe, in Australia, including South Street and in New Zealand.
