Postcard produced by the Rose Stereograph Co. No P 3748, showing the scene at the corner of Moorabool and Ryrie Sts Geelong. Has a tram in the far distance along with many motor cars of the late 1940s. In the view are Bright and Hitchcocks, the T&G building, Bank of NSW. The rear of the postcard notes that it is a real photograph. Edith Louisa Cavell (4 December 1865 – 12 October 1915) was a British nurse and patriot. She is celebrated for saving the lives of soldiers from all sides without distinction and in helping some 200 Allied soldiers escape from German-occupied Belgium during World War I, for which she was arrested. She was subsequently court-martialled, found guilty of treason and sentenced to death. Despite international pressure for mercy, she was shot by a German firing squad. Her execution received worldwide condemnation and extensive press coverage. The Kew Historical Society's postcard collection includes views of Kew, Melbourne and Greater Melbourne as well as those including overseas scenes sent or received from Europe or the Middle East. They date from the 1890s to the 2000s. These postcards may or may not include the name of the publisher or printer. A number of the cards were published as parts of popular series. A way of dating early postcards is to identify whether the reverse was divided by a central line which became the norm after 1902 in the United Kingdom. However, other postcards produced after this date do not always conform to this print layout.Historic postcard of local significance showing the layout of the Alexandra Gardens in Kew. Ltd of Tawonga and Mount Beauty. The Gully Chair Two Chair Lift began operation in 1964 and continued until 1981.
