Williams Family Collection. Original photograph mounted on card backing. George Foers (named on reverse) was Tarnagulla's policeman from 1900-1910.Monochrome photograph depicting four sisters from the Bool family of Tarnagulla, dressed up for the 1904 'Poster Fair', wearing labels relating to local stores and household products. In May 1904, a ‘poster fair’ was enjoyed by attendees at the the Victoria Hotel and Theatre, Tarnagulla. It included a range of stalls where ‘about 30 young ladies, who had charge of the various stalls, wore costumes with advertisements of local and metropolitan business firms’ to raise funds for the new Church of England parsonage. From the left, Ruth Bool is representing the Exchange Store, Florrie Bool is supporting the Criterion Store, Vera Bool prefers Hudson's Soap, and Alice Bool is advocating Velveteen Soap.'Handwritten on reverse: "G. Memorandum - 3 quarto ruled sheets + part of a former poster with a cover note, dated 20/10/1921. Written in ink to Mr. J. W. Duncan General Superintendent by William Pollock Acting Supt. about the issues at the Toorak Road Engine House regarding poor coke, recording the times of the fireman and trimmer, and problems in keeping up the power required due to the high percentage of breeze. Looks at the use of staff to fire and maintain supplies. Handwritten cover note was written on a torn poster from the Brunswick line noting a complaint from Thomson Fireman at the engine house about the lack of assistance. The town of Tawonga is in the Kiewa Valley surrounded by farmland. It is adjacent to Mt Beauty (built from 1946), an SECV town built for the workers on the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme which was being constructed from 1911 to 1961. Tawonga consisted of essential amenities including a store, school, butter factory, sporting facilities, post office, hall and hotel. Activities involved sport, social get togethers eg. dances, fundraising , CWA etc.The posters are a collection of historical photos, documentations and information regarding the history of the town of Tawonga, which is the centre of a farming community in the Kiewa Valley.Posters framed with thin black plastic strip, covered, by glass. Robert Spear Hudson (d. 1884) invented the first dry soap powder in 1837 and called it extract of soap. Following his death the company was taken over by his son and later (1908) sold to Lever Bros. a subsidiary of Uni lever.
