Drawing, A Toast
A drawing done by artist Pat Hanna and sent to friends at Legacy. He was living in London at the time and drew this on his letterhead. It was stored with other items including a letter to Frank in 1972 (possibly L/- Frank Doolan who was making an attempt to collect items relevant to Legacy's history for an official archive project - see items 01400 to 01403). Pat Hanna was an entertainer, comedian, artist and producer of reveues, plays and movies. One of his first revues was performed in France just after the armistice. A popular stage show was 'Diggers' that performed around Australia post-war and adapted to film in 1931. He was asked to pose for photographer Jack Cato for the iconic image of a digger shown in 01400. He was born George Patrick Hanna, 18 March 1888 in Whitianga, New Zealand and served in the First World War, was a founding member of Melbourne Legacy and was involved with Legacy for many years. Pat Hanna was a founding member of Melbourne Legacy and an artist and producer. Legacy kept some of his works in the archive.Drawing of a kangaroo and kiwi from Pat Hanna on his letterhead pasted onto brown cardboard. Btn.1. portrait of an Australian Soldier with a peaked cap. He has a Rising Sun badge on his cap. The portrait is black and white. 2. Black and white photo - group of five Australian soldiers WW2. This card was one of four items given to every family of a deceased soldier of the British Commonwealth. Families received a memorial plaque, a message from the King, a memorial scroll and a "Where Australians Lie" card and grave photograph or a booklet if the deceased has no known grave. This "Where Australians Lie" card was sent to the brother of Pte W. Williams No. 1442, 2nd Battalion AIF, who was killed on Gallipoli on 29th August 1915, aged 24. Walter enlisted age 23 No 1442 on 27.11.1914 in 2nd reinforcements 2nd Bn AIF, embarked for Egypt 11.2.1915, transferred to Stretcher Bearers 8.4.1915, hospital 9.6.1915 with twisted instep, rejoin unit Gallipoli 13.7.1915, KIA 29.8.1915. Refer also for photo, medals, other Cat No’s 1859P & 1860Folded four page light purple coloured card. Front features an embossed Rising Sun Badge, a title (Australian Imperial Force) and a two line border, all in purple. Inside on the left hand side is a pro forma in purple lettering with spaces for handwritten details. The right hand side features a black and white photograph of a grave marked with a cross with metal name plaques attached. Four crosses feature in the background. Tunic and badges assembled by owner to respresent a Great War Light Horse tunic from WW2 Tunic which is almost identical to the Great War tunics worn by Light Horse OR's. This tunic forms part of a mannequin essemble representing a 1st AIF 4th Light Horse soldier of the period 1916-1919 serving in Sinai, Palestine and Jordan.Tunic, OR's, 1st AIF style. Woollen serge, 8 oz, Olive drab, 4 patch pockets, 4 large plastic buttons, beige, 9 small plastic buttons, beige. Badge - The Peace Medal, c 1919
Designed by C Douglas Richardson, ‘The Peace of 1919’ medalet was issued by the Defence Department to school children throughout Australia to commemorate the signing of the Versailles Peace Treaty in 1919.One side of the medal features a symbolic female figure of Peace, holding a sword and standing on a plinth marked ‘PEACE 1919’. Behind her flies a dove, and at her left and right feet are two figures freed from their shackles. The reverse features a central panel surrounded by laurel leaves, surmounted by the King’s Crown with the word ‘VICTORY’ over the rays of the rising sun. A sailor and a digger stand at ease on either side of the panel on which is cast ‘THE / TRIUMPH / OF / LIBERTY / AND / JUSTICE’. Medal - French World War I military service awarded to FJ Browne, c.1914-1918, A. Mayeur, 1918
This French Service medal was awarded to F.J. Browne for service in the First World War tending to the wounded soldiers evacuated from France on hospital ships. The places inscribed on the medal are all in the Communaupole (Urban Area) of Lens-Liévin in the Pas de Calais where the broad plain and low hills of Artois saw some of the most savage and bloody fighting of World War I.Francis James Browne died in Sydney 1963. He had a long career in obstetrics and gynaecology. Summary of appointments include: General Practice in Wales, Maternity Department of the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, 1st director of obstetric unit, University College Hospital London. Retired and continued postgraduate teaching in London and NSW. Married to Grace Cuthbert, who was director of Maternal and Baby Welfare in NSW. A collection of objects found amongst Professor FJ Browne's papers were transferred from the Archives to the Museum collection in January 1994. A small round gold medal (.1) with presentation case (.2). The scene on the front of the medal depicts an ancient castle & surrounds with the rising sun in the background, and is inscribed "SUNT LACRYMAE RERUM". On the reverse is a figure of a winged woman against a cross, and the inscription "AUX HEROS", above a list of inscribed place names: "DE GARENCY, VIMY, ABLAIN, AVION, SOUCHEL, LENS, LORETTE, LOOS". The outside of the presentation case is maroon leather. There is a cream velvet mount for the medal and the inside of the lid of the case is lined with cream satin. "A. MAYEUR" is inscribed on both sides of the medal. The dress was made by Miss Mary Ryan, a pupil at Lilydale Convent (now Mt Lilydale College) in 1902. It was worn to the Annual Empire Day Celebrations in Lilydale. Accompanying photo shows dress worn by Monica Ryan (no. 5089). The outfit also includes two hand made pockets for handkerchiefs and ties (nos. 735 & 736) Empire Day Dress; Cream silk, cotton lined, embroidered with kangaroos and emu holding shield, with Southern Cross stars above rising sun emblem. Banner below reads 'Advance Australia', embriodered with silk and cotton thread; also gold metalic braiding.
