This stencil was used to mark bags of dried bean seed, in this case Brown Beauty bean seeds, produced by farmers in the Orbost district and clean and bagged by Fisher Bros., seed bean merchants of Orbost. This stencil is significant because it was specially made for the seed bean industry which was a major industry in the Orbost district for the first half of the 20th century. An important part of apprenticeship training involved building detailed models using required techniques. This model was constructed by a Ballarat School of Mines student enrolled in the Plumbing course. This model of a roof and chimney was made by a plumbing student in the early days of the School of Mines Ballarat. The School of Mines was a trade and mining school located in the historic gold rush town of Ballarat. The model is made from 3 Ply timber. The students were often required to build these models to demonstrate their level of knowledge of what they had been taught at trade school. Although they were often made there are not many of these models intact and in this condition. At the crossover between placemaking and public art, this space designed and constructed by Katherine Masiulanis embeds local stories to enliven the local community centre. Masiulanis has designed the public artwork to reflect the lines of crops and ploughed fields and mountains in the surrounding landscape. The artwork also refers to the seasonal travel of Aboriginal people from Wendouree to Burrumbeet and migratory birds making a similar journey. The style of the refurbished courtyard will reflect the 1970s positivity style reflected in the Community Centre architectural design and the history of the first development of the ‘Village’.
