Machine - Glider / Sailplane

The exhibit is the prototype Kingfisher Mark 1 (serial number 23) built by Edmund Schneider Ltd and first flown on 8 July 1956. It was first registered as VH-GDH on 3 May 1957. The ES57 Kingfisher is a small to medium size single seat glider that was designed to have similar control responses to the successful two seat trainer, the ES 52 Kookaburra, thus providing for a smooth transition for solo rated pilots to advance to a single seat machine. Edmund Schneider Ltd built nine Kingfishers and supplied kits for two more for construction by others. Harold Bradley (South Australia) built a modified Kingfisher with shoulder mounted wings. Kingfisher serial number 23 was originally owned by the Waikerie Gliding Club (South Australia) (1956 – 1959). From 1959, it had a nomadic existence in the hands of a string of owners in New South Wales, Queensland, Northern Territory and finally Queensland, again. In the early 1990s the glider was deregistered and flown as an ultralight sailplane. After a change in ownership, the glider was moved to Hervey Bay, Qld and re-registered as VH-GKN. After very limited use, the glider was sold again and placed in storage at Hervey Bay. In January 2004, the owner, who by then had moved overseas, entrusted the glider to Ian Patching and Geoff Hearn who moved it to Melbourne. Ian Patching returned the glider to flying condition in February 2004. Since then, it has been stripped and recovered with new aircraft fabric and requires finishing work. The logged hours flown for the Kingfisher total approximately 190 hours from 549 flights. The glider was donated to the Australian Gliding Museum on 3 June 2014.The Exhibit is one of the Edmund Schneider Ltd gliders that was designed and built in Australia in the late 1950s. It is one of the four Kingfishers that are known to survive – the Bradley Kingfisher and two of the standard Kingfishers are known to have been destroyed – the fates of five are unknown. Printed under top photo 'Eaglehawk State School. The total attendance at the Eaglehawk State is 37-, with 180 boys and 190 girls. The staff consists of the head teacher, one male assistant, seven female assistants, and three junior teachers. Two large green fabric covered Minute Books with tan leather tape on the spine and two tan leather triangles on the corners of each of the front and back covers. Both books at the top of the spine have a red label with gold lettering Minute Book 1. has brown marbled end papers with blue tape along the spine for added strength inside both covers. Book 2. has burgundy marbled end papers with green tape along the spine for added strength inside both covers. Both books have coloured marbled edges to the pages. These blank books were used by 1. Minute Book of the Berry Growers Section Victorian Fruit Growers Central Association. 2. Minute Book of the United Berry Growers Association of Victoria. Minutes of the first meeting of Book 1. were taken 1st July 1921 in Lilydale and the last minutes were on 14.8.1929. The book is filled with Minutes of meetings. 2. Minute Book of the United Berry Growers Association of Victoria. Minutes of the first meeting of Book 2. were taken on Wed August 14th at 8pm 1929 in the Silvan Hall and the last minutes were on 26.7. 1945. The book is filled with Minutes of meetings. 170 out of 190 pages used. At the back is a handwritten note on faded and foxed lined paper for the 25th Report for the Association which did not have a formal page entry between the 24th and 26th and final entry. This photograph was one of ten photographs donated to Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum and Village by Fred Trewartha. Frederick John Fox Trewartha (Fred) was a well-known Warrnambool businessman. He was born in Beeac near Geelong in 1920 and came to Warrnambool with his family as a very young child. He was apprenticed to his father John, as a saddler and later opened his own shop on Raglan Parade. He then moved into working with tarpaulins and canvases for the trucking industry. Fred was keenly interested in photography (and was a member of the Warrnambool Cine Club), yachting and boat building. He kept his yacht moored at Port Fairy for many years and participated in sailing events locally and interstate. He also built boats with his sons. He had the opportunity to meet many older sailors and it's thought this photo (and others in the set) may have been given to him by one of these men. Fred Trewartha died in 2016 in Warrnambool. The Eumeralla (sometimes spelt Eumerella) was built in 1908 in Scotland by Messrs. Scott of Kinghorn on the Firth of Forth. It was a steel screw steamer and had been designed to meet the growing demand for a thoroughly up to date passenger and cargo steamer for the Melbourne to Portland service for John McIlwraith and Company in partnership with the Belfast, Koroit Steam Navigation Company and Howard Smith Company Ltd. This photograph appeared in the Leader (Melbourne) on Saturday 28th November 1908 with the headline "Launching the Eumeralla" and shows the ship being launched on October 10th, 1908, in Scotland. It was described as "Length, 190 feet; breadth, 30 feet; depth 15 feet". It went on to say it had a speed guaranteed at 11 knots and was expected in Melbourne by the following January. It could accommodate sixty saloon passengers and thirty in steerage and had electric light fitted throughout. While on the Melbourne to Portland service the Eumeralla had several mishaps. In 1909 it crashed into the breakwater at Portarlington, splintering the woodwork and leaving a gap of about 12 feet. On Saturday 9th August 1913, as it was leaving Warrnambool, it encountered heavy seas and a passenger (Frederick Mahoney) sustained fatal injuries after hitting his head on the bulwark - and the second mate was found dead after the water poured off the deck. Several other passengers were also injured. Between 1912 and 1913 it was used to carry passengers between Brisbane, Maryborough and Rockhampton before being sent back to Melbourne for an overhaul. In 1915 it was selected for the Winter service to run daily trips between Melbourne and Geelong. In 1925 it nearly sank in the Yarra (at Queens Wharf) when it developed a list and water entered the engine room. Firemen from the Eastern Hill Station, crew and wharf workers were able to stop it from sinking. Between 1928 and 1935 the Eumeralla was laid up in Hobson's Bay before being sold to a Chinese firm to be used on the short coastal run between Shanghai and Wen Chow. It was renamed "Mel Lee (Mow Lee) Number 2". It arrived on July 12th, 1935, at Tanghai (a small Chinese port to the south of Shanghai) with 400 local passengers. The population of the town turned out to welcome the new ship with a fireworks display which caused the passengers to rush across to the side of the ship nearest the scene. The steamer immediately listed to one side and sank.This photograph is significant because of its association with the coastal trader S.S. Eumeralla and its important contribution to trade along Victoria's West Coast in the early 20th century.Black and white photograph showing a crowd of people standing on a shore watching a steamer (the Eumeralla) being launched. Faber's Fw 190A-3 Fighter Plane

Fw 190A-3 (Werk Nr 0313) at Farnborough, Hampshire, summer 1942. Faber's Fw 190A-3 now with British markings and being test flown by the RAF. There is no doubt that its study and that of the engine measurably assisted in the development of the Centaurus installation design of the Typhoon II (later to become the Tempest II, and eventually the Hawker Fury). Nevertheless its capture in no way compromised the appearance of the much faster A-4, and no doubt gave false confidence in the Spitfire IX's ability to out-fly the Fw 190. Photos documenting this address as part of a photographic series undertaken by volunteer photographers during 2013 and 2014 for The Street Where You Live Project. This was organised through the Surrey Hills Neighbourhood Centre and covered the postcode 3127 in the cities of Boroondara and Whitehorse.These photos provide a snapshot of real estate in the suburbs of Mont Albert and Surrey Hills during a period of rapid change with many properties on large blocks demolished to create higher density residential development or renewal of single dwellings. At particular risk were properties not covered by heritage overlays, especially interwar housing and post 1950's housing.
