The photo is of the Sunbury State School No. 1002, which replaced an earlier building. The Federation style red-brick school was built in 1911 and was officially opened on 2nd May 1912. An extra room was added in 1945 to accommodate increased enrolment. In 1999 the school closed at the Stawell Street site and the students relocated to the former and refurbished bluestone Industrial School in Jacksons Hill. The former red-brick school building is now part of the Sunbury Community Health Centre complex.Many former and present-day residents in Sunbury have attended this school over the years.A black and white photograph of a small school building. The mud brick cottage and outbuilding was possibly built by James Waylett in the 1850's and it is only one of three remaining mud brick buildings in the Oaklands-Greenvale which were constructed in the late 19th Century.A coloured photograph of farm scene. Maryborough is a ground level premium station, featuring one side platform. It opened on 7 July 1874 The current station building was erected in 1890, with 25 rooms and a clock tower, of red brick with stucco trimming. Common School Pleasant Creek 502. Part of a collection of Photographs by Mr. O.G. Armstrong as commissioned by the Shire of Stawell for the Inter-colonial and Paris Exhibition in Melbourne in 1866. The site for the school pictured was reserved in October 1864 and the building was opened in 1865. The donor George Lister Coop was about 21 years of age when he took this photo in 1958. This photo is of Annesley Home for the Aged at 692-694 Whitehorse Road. It was originally a Methodist, later a Uniting Church facility. The new section in the photo was part of an extension built in 1958. The Queen Anne / Edwardian brick attic home was built in c1908 for William Pilkington, a manufacturer and was called 'St Martins'. Ownership stayed in this family until c1950. A new brick veneer 2 storey building sits adjacent to a red brick Edwardian home. The two storey building under construction is the Royal Hotel. The larger building replaced the former single storey hotel which was built on the same site in 1861. Wesleyan Church Main Street Reefs. Opened 1863. Part of a collection of Photographs by Mr. O.G. Armstrong as commissioned by the Shire of Stawell for the Inter-colonial and Paris Exhibition in Melbourne in 1866. This brick church, later known as the Wesley Centre, was opened for service on Christmas Day 1863. It was situated in the Main Street alongside the Town Hall which was constructed in 1872. A small wooden school (22' x 14') was erected in Sandon by Father Patrick Smyth in 1859 (and at Golden Point) which was used for Mass and came to be regarded as a chapel. Twenty-three years later, a brick church was built by Father Allen at a cost of 1,000 pounds. The Church was blessed by Archbishop Goold on May 6th 1883 and dedicated to St Laurence. The 1940s saw some refurbishment and in 2002 a major restoration project was undertaken. St Laurence's was restored from roof to footings, by a dedicated band of volunteers and trades people. Work was completed mid 2003 and in November 2003 St Laurence's was re-dedicated with the celebration of Mass and a picnic tea. Buninyong State School was built circa 1870. It is a brick building with arch-shaped windows. Used as a state school since 1874.The school is of historic and social significance as it has operated as a state/primary school since 1874. The first Methodist church built in Cheltenham was a wooden structure which burnt down in 1893. While the exact cause of the fire was never ascertained, it was believed that a spark from a passing train ignited dried leaves in the eaves. The original church was replaced by a brick building, with the foundation stone laid in 1894. The original small, pioneer cottage was built in the late 1840s to early1850s, by an unknown pioneer. It was located on part of a 30 Acre allotment that was originally part of Henry Dendy’s Special Survey granted in 1841. The doors and window sashes, (made of red deal joinery timber), as well as the brass locks and fittings, are from the original cottage, and were imported from England.The fire-place bricks are from the original cottage, and are sun-dried, (not kiln fired), and are hand-made. Convict marks can be seen on two bricks.There is a small display of external cladding shingles from the original pioneer cottage. These shingles were hand-split, and most likely made from locally collected timber The nails included in this display were used to fasten the shingles on the original cottage, and are also hand-made. The enamel nameplate, “Colonial”, on the wall of the cottage, was the name chosen for the original pioneer cottage when a later owner, Mr August Rietman and wife Frieda leased the property in around 1917. August purchased the property 1935 for 1200 Pounds approximately and resided there until 1953. In 1974 Mr Lewis, a timber specialist, found the dilapidated building on property he had recently purchased in Jasper Rd and suggested it be reconstructed and relocated. Moorabbin Council agreed and the Cottage was rebuilt just about 250 metres from its original site. The cost of the rebuild was met by 'Victoria's 150th Committee, plus a small grant from the City of Moorabbin, and Mr Laurie Lewis donated much of the timber for the reconstruction. Although 'Box Cottage' is a re-construction, it is an unique museum that, being located in the midst of a modern community in Ormond Victoria, can educate and demonstrate many aspects of the early settler’s way of life in Victoria. The museum has copies of interesting Land Titles associated with the surrounding land, including the site of the original pioneer cottage, from Dendy’s time, and into the 1900s. ‘Box Cottage’ is named after the pioneers, William and Elizabeth Box, who resided in the original cottage from approximately 1865, until Elizabeth’s death in 1914.The re-constructed cottage plan has followed faithfully the original dimensions, and plan of the original pioneer cottage, and as many original items from that cottage’s long occupation have been incorporated. Christ Church. Church of England on Church Hill Stawell. Built 1862. Part of a collection of Photographs by Mr. O.G. Armstrong as commissioned by the Shire of Stawell in 1866 for the Inter-colonial and Paris Exhibition in Melbourne in 1866. This was the first brick church in Stawell, the Christ Church, Stawell West, and was built on Church Hill off Seaby Street in approximately 1862. Opposite the original Manse in Seaby Street it was used for services in 1863. The present Church of England the Holy Trinity is situated in Main Street and was opened and dedicated on Trinity Sunday, May the 26th, 1872. Brick Church with small bell tower. The building is Our Lady of Mount Carmel School which is attached to the Catholic Church of the same name. Initially a school was established on this site in 1877 with classes conducted in the church. A new two roomed brick building was erected on the site on 23rd January 1916 and were opened by Archbishop Mannix. There were further additions to the school as enrolments increased in 1925. The school caters for primary school aged students.
