This water wheel was located on the Steavenson River in Marysville. Barton's Store was established by Thomas John Barton in 1864. Thomas John Barton was born in 1836 in Gloucestershire and after his father died in 1850 arrived in Melbourne in 1852 along with his mother, adult sisters, younger brothers, his uncle, his uncle's wife Suzanna and their family. Thomas tried gold mining at Woods Point but found it too difficult. He then partnered with Ewen Hugh Cameron to provide the miners with meat. In 1864 they purchased a plot of land in Marysville and set up a butchers/abattoirs and from there began their business of taking supplies to the miners at the nearby Woods Point and Jamieson goldfields. In 1865 the business was firmly established and Thomas married Selina Croker at Heidelberg and brought her back to Marysville. Their first home was 'The Chestnuts', which included the store, and was situated on the town side next to the Steavenson River. Sadly, in 1876 Selina died of complications after giving birth to their sixth child. Thomas was in need of a nanny to care for his six children, including the newborn baby, and so he employed Emily Ada Sparke, who is the eldest daughter of the local school teacher. Thomas and Emily subsequently marry in 1878 and they go on to have a further 10 children over the next several years. Thomas assisted in the establishment of the first school in Marysville in 1870 and remained a very active member of the community including as a Councillor for the Shire of Healesville, Shire President and he was also appointed as a Justice of the Peace. Thomas died in Carlton in 1911. Mr James de Graaf in 1929 with his 1925 T FORD. James’ father Jacobus de Graaf arrived in Melbourne from Holland in 1853 and married Eliza Twite, aged 16 years. James married Caroline Kink in 1885 and came to live at 13 Charles Street, near Elgar Road soon after. James rode to and from work in Richmond until the train timetables were suitable for his work schedule. He then would put his bicycle in the guards van and from Richmond would still have to ride a distance. Eventually he worked in the timber trade in Box Hill. This hammer was used by workers on the ski lifts to clear them of ice. The hammer was turned by the Ski Lift Company and had a long reach. It was mainly used on the Summit T-Bar and the International Poma before they had catwalks to enable easier access for maintenance. This item was donated by Douglas Zolla. He has worked in Falls Creek for over 30 years. From 1987 until 2002. Doug worked as a De-icer with the Falls Creek Ski Lifts Company. These vintage tins contained medicinal products to help relieve illness symptoms for the family at home in the 1900's. Two were manufactured in Australia and the two Ayrton's products were made in England.Three vintage medicinal tins and cardboard container. 1. This book was discovered beneath the floor of a former Ballarat School of Mines office during renovations in 1970. It appears to have been placed there in safe storage, then forgotten for decades. Both State Library of Victoria and Monash University have a full run of all 10 volumes of Recueil de planches sur les sciences, les arts libereaux, et les arts mechaniques avec leur explication. This copy is the sixth volume, and contains 294 pages. School of Mines stamps are dated 1870. Etchings by Benard Fecit and Louis-Jacques Goussier (1722-99). Goussier was a French illustrator and encyclopedist.Large hard covered book of 294 beautifully printed plates on handmade paper. Each plate has descriptions written in French.
