Frederick Napoli Prescott was a prominent Bendigo Optician and Jeweller. He was born and educated in Hobart before joining his father's jewellery and optical business. After studying in Europe to gain further qualifications he returned to Australia and opened a business at the corner of Mitchell and Hargreaves Street Bendigo. He was later in partnership with Mr C.M. Dawe trading as Prescott & Dawe. Harold Victor Pulfer was born in Bendigo in 1887 and died 8/12/1940. He lived at 12 Brougham St., Quarry Hill. At the time of his death he was listed as a merchant and left an estate worth 11,782 pounds. By 1912 he was trading as Hamilton and Pulfer from a business in Hargreaves Street, Bendigo. The Bendigo mayoral chain or chain of office was donated by George Lansell in 1893 and manufactured from local gold by F Prescott. The design of modern mayoral chains (also known as a livery collar) mimics the ancient gold collar of Esses worn by the Lord Mayor of London which was bequeathed to his successors by Sir John Aleyn (who died in 1545) and which has a large jewelled pendant added in 1607. Prescott from 9ct Yellow Gold in 1893 and believed to be made from Bendigo gold, the Bendigo mayoral chain was conceived by Mr J.H. Abbott and created with financial assistance of Mr George Lansell the "Gold King" of Bendigo who contributed the central medallion. The 18 links which made up the original chain represented serving mayors to date and were gifted by ex mayors or their representatives. The main chain consists of 35 links of quatrefoil form with the name of each mayor and the years of their term engraved and filled with black enamel. Overtime, as the chain grew too long to wear, it was separated into two joining chains eventually consisting of another 34 link section, totaling 69 links. The monogram of each mayor in gold is placed in the centre of each link and the links are connected by filigree 9ct gold joining curbs, unique to this period. The engraved central 'drop' or medallion is an eight pointed form with the body being an irregular oval containing four projections and four recesses forming the eight points. The shield section depicts the Australian emblem in miniature above and larger central Bendigo Coat of Arms filled with coloured enamel. The reverse of the medallion bears Lansell's name and is inscribed with the following: / Bendigo gold field discovered in 1851/ proclaimed municipality of Sandhurst /1855 / and city 1871/ Named changed to City of Bendigo 1891, in honor of which event / Cr J. Strathfieldsaye was first incorporated as a road district on 20 August 1861, and became a shire on 17 September 1866.Strathfieldsaye Council was suspended on 20 July 1993, with a commissioner appointed, after allegations of the council being divided and unworkable.On 7 April 1994, the Shire of Strathfieldsaye was abolished, and, along with the City of Bendigo, the Borough of Eaglehawk, the Rural City of Marong and the Shire of Huntly, was merged into the newly created City of Greater Bendigo. Prior to the election of female Councillors and Mayors in the 1960’s, the Lady Mayoress role was one of the few ways women could officially undertake civic duties. Mayoresses made important contributions to their local communities through their charity work and as ambassadors for their region on a state and federal level. They also undertook some Mayoral duties on occasions when their husband was unavailable. The Bendigo Mayoress medallion was commissioned by Sir George Lansell Jnr in the tradition of making a mayoral presentation in gold. It was first worn by Mayoress Snell and was presented to her on April 11th, 1956 at the municipal centenary dinner at the Shamrock Hotel. The medallion was passed on to each subsequent Mayoress when the new Mayor was appointed. The Mayoress medallion was commissioned by Sir George Lansell Jnr in the tradition of making a mayoral presentation in gold. The drop and chain have been hand crafted n 18ct yellow gold and engraved by a master engraver also by hand. Medal commemorating the Centenary of Government of Victoria and the Discovery of Gold, commissioned by the Victorian Government. Designed by Andor Mészáros and minted by K.G. Luke, Melbourne, 1951 marked the centenary of Victoria's separation from the colony of New South Wales. As part of the celebrations, the Victorian Government commissioned this medal from Andor Meszaros. Drawing on his classical background, Mészáros developed the imagery for 'Equality and Justice through Freedom'. In 1791 Prague organized the first World's Fair, Bohemia (modern-day Czech Republic). The first industrial exhibition was on the occasion of the coronation of Leopold II as a king of Bohemia, which took place in Clementinum, and celebrated the considerable sophistication of manufacturing methods in the Czech lands during that time period. The French tradition of national exhibitions culminated with the French Industrial Exposition of 1844 held in Paris. This fair was followed by other national exhibitions in Europe. In 1851, under the title "Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of All Nations", the World Expo was held in The Crystal Palace in Hyde Park, London, the United Kingdom. The Great Exhibition, as it is often called, was an idea of Prince Albert, Queen Victoria's husband, and is usually considered to be the first international exhibition of manufactured products. It influenced the development of several aspects of society, including art-and-design education, international trade and relations, and tourism. Wax seals have been used since the Middle Ages and are primarily used for legitimising and authenticating official documents. This wax seal was used by the Campaspe Road Board (later the Huntly Council).
