Debbie LLOYD Debbie Lloyd returned to study in 2005 completing a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Visual Arts) degree at the University of Ballarat (now Federation University) in 2007, with honours the following year. She returned to the university as Artist in Residence in 2009. During her time at the University Debbie exhibited in many group exhibitions and her work was selected for the National Graduates Show at PICA in Western Australia. Debbie’s first solo exhibition was held at Space22 in Ballarat, towards the end of 2010. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. Bethanga was established as a result of the discovery of gold. Gold was first reported in the Bethanga area in 1852. Before 1876 gold mining in the Bethanga district occurred to the north of the town and was known as the 'Talgarno diggings'. Reports of alluvial gold date back to 1852. Early gold fields were worked at Ruby Creek, Gold Creek and Jarvis Creek. The opening of the Bethanga goldfields began with the discovery of a gold-bearing quartz reef on New Year’s Day 1876. The 'Gift' mine site is located southeast of Kurrajong Gap lookout to the west of Bethanga township. The Great Eastern Copper Smelting Works was opened in 1878. Due to the nature of the gold-bearing quartz reef, the gold was difficult to extract, and the discovery of copper led to a change in focus. It was not until the early 1890s that an efficient technique for extracting the gold from the ore was discovered, and once again gold became the focus, with copper as a by-product. Bethanga was removed from the official list of goldfields in 1912, however some mining activity has taken place since.This image reflects an important time in the development of Bethanga and Northeast Victoria.A large mounted and framed image of horse teams and their owners hauling a large boiler to the gold mine near Bethanga, Victoria. A poppet head is the framework above a mine shaft which supports the wheels for the winding cables. there where hundreds of poppet heads in Bendigo.Wooden model of a Poppet Head. A pyramid shape with a 32 centimetre square shaped base rising 45 centimetres to a 13 centimetre square top with two nine centimetre pully wheels mounted on it. Halfway from the base is a 22 centimetre square platform. It has a nine centimetre square opening with a cage in it that is attached to a pully above. There is a twenty centimetre by ten centimetre platform extending from one side, the opposite side has a six centimetre wide staircase leading to the ground. there is cage in the bottom platform that is attached to a pully on the top platform. The book was used by Charles Bacon who studied at the University of Nevada in the late 1930s/early 1940s. Bacon worked at Bunker Hill Mines and Kellogg Idaho, before arriving in Australian in 1951. He worked for CN Myers, a company involved with paper converting. CN Myers was a family business (on Charles Bacon's maternal line). James Robert Valentine Anderson (1881-1969) was born at Chewton. He married Minnie Lyle Morrison (1878-1973) in 1907. He was a mining engineer who became a teacher at the School of Mines. In 1907 he became the curator of the School of Mines Museum and in 1910 was appointed the Principal/Director of the School of Mines (now TAFE). He held this position until about 1945.Program for the official opening of the refurbished School of Mines Building renamed the JRV Anderson Building for the Bendigo College of TAFE in November 1986.
