The postcard has a poem that says "Manifestly, since love is the law of life, If men are to be won from hate to love, If those who doubt and deny are to be wooed to faith, If the Race is ever to be led and lifted into a life of Service, It must be by the Fine Art of COMRADESHIP. - J. Ford Newton" The hand written note says: "Dear Bill, Just to wish you all the best for 1943. Yours sincerely, Herb Greenway." There is no post mark, postage stamp or address on the card. Presumably this card was hand delivered as a New Years greeting in 1943. Legacy was in the process of setting up Holmbush as a hostel to care for the children of deceased servicemen and these are an indication of the type of skills and attributes they required. Holmbush was the first hostel for children that Legacy started and operated from April 1943. It was later renamed Blamey House after another hostel called Blamey House was closed. For those interested in the history of Melbourne Legacy this book is a must read. Filled full of larger than life characters and the good will of many volunteers and benefactors of Legacy. The book should be read in conjunction with Part Two (item 00365). These type written sheets were set in order and put together by some members of The Advisory, History And Tradition Committee (Melbourne Legacy).Significant in that this is a scholarly attempt at recording the early history (1932-1944) of Melbourne Legacy. These were the years of the Great Depression and World War 2, hence shortages of all manner of things. Mine managers had a variety of roles. They were a go-between for investors or shareholders and were responsible for the effective utilisation of human and physical resources above and underground. From the early 1870's the Bendigo school of mines held courses and exams leading to a Mine Manager's Certificate. These certificates were awarded in 3 classifications:- 1st class certificate holders could manage any mine where large and expensive machinery was used. They needed knowledge and competence in areas such as surveying, underground plan drawing, ventilation, amalgamation, retorting and smelting. They must also be literate and numerate. 2nd Class:- able to manage any mine where steam machinery was in use. 3rd Class:- for mines where there was no steam machinery . They needed to have a good knowledge of whim, whip or windlass work. Conversations continued through to the 1920's about whether the requirement for a Managers Certificate should be made compulsory under amendment to the Mines Act 1883. Manual - Set of five manuals: Theory Carpentry, Solid Geometry, Uniform Building Regulations
The donor's father (William Clarence Christopher) was born in 1906 in Williamson Street, Bendigo and was schooled at the Bendigo School of Mines. The notebook on theoretical Carpentry must date from around 1920 when he was an apprentice. His brother James Charles Christopher was a teacher, the Solid Geometry drawings date from 1925-1932 and were submitted by students at Ballarat Junior Technical school. The book od building regulations was used by William Clarence in the 1940's and 50's while employed as a building foreman at Braybrook by Industrial Engineering Ltd.The manuals are covered with brown paper and the title in red or black texter on the front. Document - Jonathan Harris / Axedale
Jonathan Harris was born in Sussex England in 1822. His father Jonathan Snr was transported to Australia and his wife obtained permission to follow him as a free settler when Jonathan jnr was about 7 yrs.In 1842, Jonathan snr (who held a ticket of leave) and his son Jonathan Jnr were found guilty of theft and transported to Tasmania. Family history suggests that following his term, Jonathan jnr became a police detective before returning to Victoria. He and his wife had a store at Third White Hill in Bendigo and one day while walking to Eaglehawk, Jonathan found a rich vein of gold in what was to become the Hustlers Mine. He took large samples to England for crushing and subsequently sold his claim. Upon returning to Melbourne he conducted a business before taking up land at Axedale. He farmed here, including the growing of apples up until his death 20/7/1881. His efforts must have been successful as following his death the sale of property at Axedale included two pieces of land that each had two cottages that had been rented out. Booklet - Boltons Office National Celebrating 120 years of Business in Bendigo, 2005
Parry Collection History tells us that Benjamin Bolton and his two eldest sons, William and Arthur, began a printing business known as Bolton & Sons on March 25, 1885. But the Bolton name could just as easily have been erased from the annals of Bendigo during the treacherous sea journey that brought them from England in 1883. Benjamin, his wife and eight children (the youngest of whom was only three months old), boarded the “clipper” ship Ivanhoe on 17 July 1883 with little idea of what lay in store for them. Halfway through their 84-day journey, the Ivanhoe found itself in the midst of an equinoxial gale. For two days and nights, the ship was battered by huge seas and winds, while the Boltons and other passengers were battened down below deck with just a few candles and no fresh food or water. The ship and its passengers survived, but many of the crew were injured, and the ship was badly damaged. Having survived the gale, a week later, the Ivanhoe was hit with sleet, hail and snow, and the peril of icebergs. It must have been a great day for the Bolton family when Cape Otway appeared out of the fog, and the cry of “land ho!” echoed about the ship. The Bolton’s had arrived, and a Bendigo institution was about to be born. The location of the original printing business was in High Street but later moved to Williamson Street where the business underwent a name change to Bolton Bros and expanded into manufacturing paper bags and other stationery lines. In 1902, Bolton Bros moved to 43 Mitchell Street, which housed the retail stationery department and the main office, while the printing factory was on the second and third floors. Next door at 47 Mitchell Street, the wholesale division and machine service department operated. William and Arthur Bolton and their sons travelled throughout central and northern Victoria selling their own products and representing other companies. They are credited with being the innovators of the loose-leaf ledger. Today, of course, the business is back in Williamson Street with an even greater presence but the same entrepreneurial flair that has seen it survive and flourish through everything history has thrown at it. Harold Victor Pulfer was born in Bendigo in 1887 and died 8/12/1940. He lived at 12 Brougham St., Quarry Hill. At the time of his death he was listed as a merchant and left an estate worth 11,782 pounds. By 1912 he was trading as Hamilton and Pulfer from a business in Hargreaves Street, Bendigo. “The Keeper looks after the shrines of the dead and he is responsible for their wellbeing, to make sure that their spirits do not return to make trouble for the living. Beyond their grave there is no blame, so he keeps all the dead, criminal, foreign etc. Keepers are not often seen because they live well away from all social groups, being supposed to spend most of their time in the nether world. The Keeper’s Robes carry complex amulets or protection from the dead, who he both guards and fears. He must also stop the living from using his charges against one another. His life is almost totally ritual, given over to chants and spells. He will never marry, but will breed by impregnating a selected mate in order to carry on the line, the office is hereditary. When his children are old enough, they are apprenticed to him and must live apart from the community, looked after by a nurse and taught all the rituals necessary for their future career. Very occasionally, a child is chosen from the community because of some special characteristic - precognition, albino colouring, special interest in the dead etc. At any time there might be up to twelve apprentices of various ages who assist the Keeper in his work. These children are taboo to all others, who must close their eyes if they accidentally catch sight of an apprentice.” -Inga Hunter -

“The Keeper of Pathways is a simple, secular office. Her job involves the maintaining of routes through and within the forests, and the lighting of night paths. She keeps a team of designers, workers and artificers, who must constantly strive to keep the wayrights free from invading undergrowth, so that they may admit safe and well-lit passage for all travellers. Not an exciting job, but one which is vital to communication between groups, and to the general safety of Forest dwellers. The forest paths (wayrights) are lit by strings of small lights made from a species of glowing fungus, which is specially cultivated in the mountain caves. A whole team of workers is responsible for the growth of the light fungus, taking shifts as a public duty. No Forest Dweller like caves, so the shift-work is shared out as a public service, one which each person must carry out at regular times, dictated by the clerks of the Keeper of the Pathways.”-Inga Hunter -

Document - Urban Planning Document, City of Kew, City of Kew : Minimum Size of Allotment Required, 1945-1955
A document outlining the relevant by-laws produced by the City Of Kew to regulate the minimum size of allotments in Barkers Road, Burke Road, Cotham Road, Glenferrie Road and Studley Park Road, as well as in other streets more generally. The by-laws specify the size of allotments in which single unit dwellings, attached houses and maisonettes, and flats could be built. In the ‘main streets’ a minimum land area for single unit dwellings was 8,100 square feet, with an average frontage of 60’ and a depth of 135’. In other streets this was reduced to an overall size of 6,250 square feet, with an average dimensions of 50’ x 125’. In specifying the land area required by flats, different sizes were regulated for the construction of between two and six flats. Six flats at the time when the regulations were passed must have been the upper limit permitted. Understanding the size of land listed in imperial measurements can be a challenge. Within Australia, the so-called quarter acre block was approximately 11,000 square feet. Those specified in the by-laws would appear to be smaller. The document was pasted on the reverse of a subdivision plan in the collection.This is a rare (undated) document produced by the City of Kew defining how subdivision within the municipality should occur. "Calvert Model" hats were designed by Frank Tisdale. A Government Gazette of the State of New South Wales on Friday 7 September 1973 (No.117), page 3941, recorded that: "CALVERT MILLINERY PTY LIMITED (In Liquidation), formerly trading as Frank S. Tisdale.—A first and final dividend is intended to be declared in the above matter. If persons claiming to be creditors have not proved their debts or had their debts admitted by the liquidator by 24th September, 1973, they will be excluded from this dividend.—Dated this 3rd day of September, 1973. P. J. WOODWARD, Liquidator, 32 York Street, Sydney." Therefore the hat must predate 1973, and given that it is in the style favoured by the actress Audrey Hepburn (the style of the hat has been called an "Audrey") the hat probably dates to the 1960s.The Kew Historical Society’s fashion and design collection is comprised of costumes, hats, shoes and personal accessories. Many of these items were purchased or handmade in Victoria; some locally in Kew. The extensive hat collection comprises items dating from the 1860s to the 1970s. While most of the hats in the collection were created by milliners for women, there are a number of early and important men’s hats in the collection. The Melbourne artist Alma Agnes Marion Figuerola, was the daughter of Juan Pedro Narciso Figuerola (1869-1919) and Alice Lucinda Walker Hanson (1889-1969). Each of their three daughters grew up to be involved in the arts: Alma as a painter; Carmen Irene (1906-1993) as a short story writer, poet and teacher of dancing; and Sylvia (also Silvia) Lyla Alice (1911-1992) as a composer and cellist. The first art lessons Alma Figuerola received were with Oscar Binder. Later she attended the art school established by the Melbourne 'tonalist' [Duncan] Max Meldrum (1875-1955). She graduated from his school in 1920, participating in her first group exhibition in the same year. Solo exhibitions of her work were to be held in 1933 at the Meldrum Gallery in Elizabeth Street, in 1937 and 1945 at the Athenaeum Gallery at 188 Collins Street, and in 1951 at Georges Gallery in Collins Street. Throughout her extensive career she participated in group exhibitions, usually with artists of the Meldrum School, and as a member of the Twenty Melbourne Painters, of which she was invited to become an associate in 1935. In 1953, her portrait of Professor ES Hills was entered in the Archibald Prize Competition of the Art Gallery of New South Wales. A resident of Kew from the 1930s - 51 Studley Park Road, often with her mother, her sister Carmen, or both - from c.1942 until her death she lived at 'D’Estaville', 7 Barry Street. From the late 1930s she is recorded as actively contributing to the arts at a local level. In 1939 and 1940 she participated in art exhibitions at the Hawthorn Municipal Library organised by Jessie Carbines. From 1944 to 1951 she co-organised successive Kew Arts Festivals, initially in the Presbyterian Church Hall in Highbury Grove and later at the Recreation Hall in Wellington Street. A foundation member of the Kew Historical Society in 1958, Alma Figuerola remained an active member of the Society until her death on 8 December 1970. The photographic firm of Morrison & Co., were active at 81 Bourke Street East during the 1880s. Like numerous other photographers in Melbourne, their business must have been severely curtailed by the Depression of the 1890s. The sitter’s identity has been established as a Mrs. Merritt. While we know that she is not the Mrs Merritt who was to be the wife of the future Mayor of Kew, there were two Mrs Merritts who were shopkeepers in High Street, Kew. Mrs Lucy Merritt operated a bootmaker’s shop, and subsequently a “boot warehouse” from 1888 until the 1920s. Miss Laura Merritt established a dressmaker’s shop in High Street in 1910. Her business also lasted until the 1920s, albeit changed to that of a bookseller and stationer. Both portraits are of the same woman.Cabinet Card by Morrison & Co. While the precise details of its original construction have not been discovered, we know that it was originally named Elm Lodge, and that the property was offered for sale in 1863 by Thomas Mitchell, of the firm Mitchell & Bonneau, wholesale ironmongers and merchants. The house was sold in about 1873 to William Siddeley (1827-1905), who was described on the occasion of his death as ‘the father of Australian shipping’. The next owner was Arthur Septimus King (1827- 99), who renamed the house Madford after his purchase of the property in 1875. It was A.S. King for whom this artwork was completed. Following King’s death in 1899, portions of the property were sold, including to the Borough of Kew in 1905, to form the Alexandra Gardens. Then, in 1920, the house and its remaining lands were sold to the Catholic Church who opened St Anthony’s Home for Children on the site in 1922. That building was promptly demolished, and the site redeveloped circa 1976.Gift of James Pearson, 2022This fine perspective drawing of the architectural elements of Madford [formerly Elm Lodge, later St Anthony's Home for Babies] is contrasted with the freer addition in watercolour of the layout and plants of the garden facing Wellington Street. The view selected is the south-facing main facade and the west facing side. After A.S. King purchased the house in 1875, it was extended with new wings at the rear to accommodate his large family. Arthur Henry Dear was an employee of the City of Kew, acting as Hall Keeper of the Kew Recreation Hall in Wellington Street, and later the new Kew City Hall in Cotham Road. The Arthur Dear Collection contains memorabilia - tickets, programmes, invitations - as well as his identification badge. Items in the collection dates from the 1940s to the 1970s. Some items in the collection predate his period of service and must have been in the archives of the Hall. The Kew Recreation Hall (Wellington Street) and later the Kew City Hall (Cotham Road) were major locations in suburban Melbourne in the postwar period for civic and private events including theatre productions and exhibitions. The Arthur Dear Collection (in conjunction with the scrapbooks compiled by Marion Tilley) provide a comprehensive snapshot of performing arts in Kew. The collection includes valuable data about performances, performers, directors etc. Admission ticket (sic) to a performance of Arrah-Na-Pogue, a beautiful Irish drama by Dion Boucicault, at the Kew Recreation Hall on Monday 2 September 1895. The yellow ticket includes details of the performance including the name of the company performing the play - Mr. Lyons Talented Dramatic Company.
