Book, Ballarat School of Mines Minute Book, 1956-1961, 1956-1961
Federation University Australia was established on 1 January 2014. Formerly known as the University of Ballarat, its enabling legislation was the University of Ballarat Amendment (Federation University Australia) Act 2013. Although formally created as a University in 1994, the University of Ballarat has a lineage back to 1870 with the establishment of the School of Mines Ballarat, making it the third institution of higher learning to be established in Australia and the first to be established in regional Australia. On 1 January 1994, Ballarat University College became the University of Ballarat and in 1998 the University merged with three TAFE Institutes to become a dual sector institution with multiple campuses. On 1 January 2014, the University of Ballarat amalgamated with the Monash University Gippsland Campus to form Federation University Australia. The Gippsland Campus also had a long lineage dating back to 1928 with the establishment of the Yallourn Technical School which became a predecessor institution to the Gippsland College of Advanced Education formed in 1968. In 1990, it was renamed the Monash University College and in 1993 became the Gippsland Campus of Monash University. In 2016, Federation University Australia announced plans to take possession, over a two-year period, of Monash’s Berwick Campus in the south-east corridor of Melbourne. Federation University Australia, or FedUni, is headquartered in Ballarat and offers programs in Higher Education and Vocational Education and Training to regional Victoria and beyond. The University’s commitment to educational and social equity, teaching excellence, research distinction, environmental sustainability and regional capacity building has enabled it to develop in a way that draws on its proud heritage to inform its future. Its regional character sets a framework for the University’s priorities but does not constrain it from serving wider community interests, nationally and internationally. The name Federation University Australia was chosen to convey the scope and capacity of an expanded regional university with a federated network of campuses.Hard Cover book, partly bound in leather with Ballarat School of Mines Council Minutes, and Finance Committee minutes. ballarat school of mines, ballarat school of mines council, ballarat school of mines council minutes, ballarat school of mines finance committee, josephine brelaz schlarship, a.j. affleck, h.l. allnut, arblaster, h.e., aston, robert, barker, k.c., barrell, g.w., beaston, c.w, benney, v, blackwood, r.r., noel brelaz, brelaz guido, brinsden, neville bunning, james caldwell, callow, n.l, clelland, john, corbould, day, p.l., dewsnap, n.f., w.g. durant, elliott, m., faulkner, f, ferguson, f.e., finn, william, gallagher, b., garner, l, gordon, i.r., hancock, v, heseltine, mary, hooper, noel, hullick, k, m.b. john, johnson, alan ernest, johnson, b.a., bullarto, bullarto excursion, ballarat gaol, m.b. john brassworks, motor mechanics huts, 90th anniversary, josephine brelaz, v. hancock, alfred mica smith, john wolfe, s.d. wynes, r.w. richards award, spargo creek, spargo creek excursion -

Booklet - Reports, John Ferres, Government Printer, Safety Mining Cages. Report of the Board of Enquiry on Safety Cages 1878-9; together with proceedings of the Board and Appendices, 1879
From the Argus, Friday 18 July 1879:- SAFETY MINING CAGES. The report of the board on safety mining cages was laid on the table of the Legislative Assembly fortnight The board, which has tested the following inventions Nances, Williams patent, Jackson and Middleton's patent Sesmours patent, Allans patent, and Hassan a patent, reports as follows - 1. That the preponderance of evidence given by miners and others qualified to form an opinion is strongly in favour of the adop-tion of a safety cage for general use in the mines of this colony, provided that a reliable invention can be brought forward, and its practical utility satisfactorily determined 2. That in view of the rapid increase of cage accidents, and supported by the evidence before them, the board are of opinion that some special provision should be made to check such a prolific source of danger as is shown to exist in the working of the shaft and machinery employed for winding purposes. 3. That this check could be imposed by means of such a regulation as that at present contained in the statute, i e -" Every cage used in a mine shall be fitted with special and suitable appliances to prevent its sudden fall down a shaft and also to prevent its coming into contact with the poppet heads." The board, however, consider that mine proprietors should be permitted to exercise their own discretion in the selection of safety cages, but safety hooks and balance catches must be used in connexion with every case 4. That the board have witnessed trials of all the inventions brought under their notice, and from the result of their observations the members are of opinion that the adoption of these safety appliances will afford additional security to the large section of the community engaged in mining operations.48 foolscap pages report stitched together. safety cages, safety mining cages, george collins levey, mining, mitchell and osborne's patent safety catches for mining cages, mining cages, seymour's patent safety cage, pryor's safety cage, white's safety cage, mining accidents, dyke's freehold gmc creswick, angelo mining co castlemaine, britannia qmc ballarat, alexander kennedy smith, george r. fincham, henry roberts williams, robert clark, r. richardson, allan's patent balalrat, hassan's patent daylesford, david white, charles stewart, w.h. grainger, h.b. nicholas, t. hassan, r. allan, a.k. smith, james thomson, william collard smith, j.h. seymour, john s. delbridge, william buttle, james davidson, j.p. carolin, r. clark, thomas eyre, george marshall, g. thureau, william bottoms, robert carr, j.c. march, john keam, david park, j.a. lewis, lester's hotel, ballarat, robert allan, nancarrow saftey cage, robert malachi serjeant, robert henderson, g.f. smith, r.w. newman, william benson, f. bennett, john sharp, thomas couchman, john a. wallace, john small, william h. grainger, james cowling, tools -

In Retrospect In mid 1952, a distinguished man arrived in Bendigo and interested several citizens, including Dr. P Goodman, the President of the Musical Advancement Society, in the formation of a Company for the production of Musical Comedy. The meeting was called at the home of Mr Fred Bush, and a group of enthusiasts made the acquaintance of Mr Norman Lee, our producer and sequently the M.A.S. and several leading citizens, sponsored the first production, by subscribing funds for initial expenses. From such humble beginning, our present Society originated. Mr Cyril Cyril Warne was appointed Musical Director, Mrs Phyllis House, Pianist, and Miss Madge Welch, Ballet Mistress. During the Season of ''Chu Chin Chow,'' the Society will stage its 100th performance - indeed an outstanding feat in such a brief history. Looking back it is interesting to recall the 23 shows which are included, and the productions are- (listing of productions included in program). Next Productions. . . Capital Theatre, Bendigo, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra Orchestra. Direction: Australian Broadcasting Commission. Conductor: Joseph Post. Solo Violinist: Bertha Jorgenson. Wednesday 30th June, 8pm. Programme 6d. Australian Broadcasting Commission, Chairman: R J F Boyer, M.A. Vice-Chairman: E R Dawes. Members: Sir John Medley, M.A. Mrs Ivy Kent, J S Hanlon. General Manager: Charles Moses. Manager for Victoria: Conrad Charlton. Director of Music: W G James. Federal Concert Manager: R G Lamb. Concert Manager for Victoria: Dorrie O'Neal. Joseph Post. With this concert appearance, for which he is coming specially from Sydney, Joseph Post is making a return visit among his former orchestra, for he was stationed in Melbourne as resident conductor of the ABC's Melbourne Orchestra for several years. When the Sydney Symphony was formed on a permanent basis, with Eugene Goosens in charge, Mr Post was appointed his deputy as junior conductor to the Sydney Symphony - at the same time resuming his earlier position as director of the . . . Photo of Joseph Post. Bertha Jorgensen It is a notable occasion for music lovers when Melbourne's esteemed 'First Lady' of the Orchestra steps out of her place as leader and is heard as soloist. Bertha Jorgensen gave her first public performance as a five year old prodigy in Castlemaine, where she then lived, and a few years later she began travelling each week the 60 miles to Melbourne for lessons with Alberto Zelman, Junior. At fifteen, still adorned with pigtail, she came to Melbourne with her family and joined his orchestra. Since then Miss Jorgensen has been constantly engaged in orchestral work, and in attaining the exacting role of leader of the Melbourne Symphony is holder of a unique position. No other major orchestra in the world is led by a woman, and many are the evidences of amazement expressed by visiting conductors. Some have been taken aback and inclined to scepticism at the outset, but all have gone away with high praise for her ability. Photo of Bertha Jorgensen. Programme. Oberon.
