This media kit was produced by Melba Industries, part of the Austrim Textiles Group. It contains three photographs, as well as other company information. The photos depict Mr Alan Jackson, the chairman of Austrim, Mr Tom Quick, the general manager of technical textiles at Austrim, and a shot of the new packs being made in the old Valley Mill. The kit was given away at a media launch to publicise the production of an Australian made, nylon wool pack called 'Jumbuck'. The packs will be made at the former Valley Mill in Geelong. John Parkes avoids technology. This work expects the viewer to understand the importance of the hand and time… The blanket and the apron were gifted by friends in Germany. The apron was worn by Helen in her studio practice as a jeweller. The blanket was a find in the cellar of their Munich apartment. The red moleskin cloth was an OP shop find and originally a eucalyptic green. This cloth was discharged and overdyed. Cloth will often sit around the house, unattended, until ideas germinate. Is “Art” about “Art” or about the “Artist”?... There is a Buddhist notion of not writing in the first person, in that the Ego is not employed. There is a Japanese tradition “Boro” in which cloth is not discarded but repaired. Helen BURGESS (c.1927 - 08.03.2018) Born Sydney, New South Wales Helen Burgess gained a Diploma of Design and Craft, and instructed Craft in the Occupational Therapy Departments of Repatriation and Rehabilitation. In 1957 she came to Victoria, gaining a Technical teachers Certificate from the Bendigo School of Mines. Soon after moving to Ballarat in 1973 she joined the newly formed Ballarat Embroiders Guidance Group (later Embroiders Guild). She lectured in Craft at the Ballarat Institute of Advanced Education from around 1974. She retired from the Ballarat College of Advanced Education in 1982. Helen Burgess was also an office bearer with the Ballarat Field Naturalists Club. Helen retired from BCAE in 1982 as Lecturer in Art and Craft, having commenced at BIAE approx. 1974. This work was possibly exhibited at the Embroiderers Guild, Victoria - Ballarat Branch. Dr. Frances Mary Burke (1907 - 1994) was a textile designer and printer, businesswoman, artist and Australian design advocate and retailer. Burke’s modern abstract textile designs incorporated motifs and colours inspired by Australian Indigenous art, Pacific Island cultures, Australian flora and fauna, English gardens, and the sea and its wildlife. The cormorant weaving was depicted through the traditional weaving method of the blanket stitch of the Yorta Yorta people. As birds are very significant and important in Aboriginal culture, the cormorant was created to represent the meaning of Wangaratta for the local people and wider community. The weaving is an extension of my series of works which represent wildlife along the waterways, particularly in the North East of Victoria and within my tribal homelands. In 2001 I was taught to weave at a weaving workshop held at Gas Works in Port Melbourne by old aunties from Victoria and South Australia which included Yvonne Koolmatrie. A body of my weaving works, which include turtles and spirits, is held at the National Gallery of Victoria. The panels from the I Am Because We Are series are woven from cut-up donated socks. They were woven on a four-shaft floor loom with a cotton warp. The names of the donors have been typed onto polyester ribbons which have been woven in with the socks. It’s possible that the typewriter ink could fade if exposed for long periods to strong light, but the sock material should be fairly stable as they were almost exclusively commercially-produced socks. The wood of the frames has been painted with an acrylic paint, and covered with MDF boards. The fabric is stretched over the frames and secured with staples.Wangaratta Art Gallery Collection. The Warrnambool Woollen Mill was established in South Warrnambool in 1909 and was officially opened in 1910 with John Bennett as the first manager. In 1968 the mill was sold to the Dunlop company and in 1982 Dunlop sold the mill to Onkaparinga Woollen Company. In 1983 Onkaparinga was taken over by Macquarie Worsteds and traded in Warrnambool as Warrnambool Textiles. This arrangement ceased in 1994. In 2000 the mill closed after 90 years of operations.This is not a very significant item but it is interesting as it is connected to one of the major industries operating in Warrnambool for 90 years (1910-2000). It highlights also one aspect of the mill’s history- the years 1983-1994 when the mill operated as Warrnambool Textiles. This is a plastic shopping bag from the Warrnambool Woollen Mill shop.
