Three photocopies of a newspaper article titled Old Battery to charge-up tunnel tourism. The date 11/1/85 is written at the top of the article. There is a photo of the battery mentioning it was the Thompson's Foundry battery and it was being re-erected at Maldon, near Castlemaine. It has been in far of Victoria to crush rock taken from mines there. The battery will be one of the attractions in the Parkin's Reef Reserve being developed by the Conservation, Forests and Lands. Document - LONG GULLY MINES
One page document describing three mines formerly operating in Long Gully, Bendigo. The Ironbark, Carlisle United and the Hercules mine are described. Some information given on the Old Carlisle, the North Garden and the Passby. The poppet legs on the Ironbark came from the Hercules No. 1 mine on Danger Hill and before that at the Unity Mine, Ironbark. The Carlisle United was J.B. Watson's mine until his death in 1892. The lease was 76 acres, 660 yards on line of reef. The Kent shaft was the next mine north Havilah Road, Boldt Street's corner. 'The Carlisle United was formed by the amalgamation of ttte companies, the Old Carlisle, the North Garden and the Passby. These mines were situated on the west side of Bennett Street in about a length of a few hundred feet, with the Passby on the Casley Street corner. And the old Carlisle and North Garden only recently being unearthed beneath the Unity, 'Carlisle' sand heap.' Details about the mining plant, the main shaft, the winding engine air compressor, stone crusher, and engine house are given. The Kent shaft and steel poppet legs are described. He had been at the Great Northern Company's mine when the engine driver was hauling water from the 1.780 feet level, with a tank on one side and a cage on the other, broke the cross-head and two motion-bars; the drums reversed and desecended about 50 feet. The driver applied the air-brakes. The drums were brought a standstill, without any further damage. The Insp. Was in favour of the air -brakes and thought every should be compelled to use them in shafts below 1,000 feet in depth. Also a list of companies who have had these brakes fitted to their winding plants and a list of the companies who intend to fit them. Report from the Bendigo Advertiser Wednesday October 9th 1907. Notes mention Fire Brigade, miners, how the fire started and how the men down the shaft escaped when the rope crash down the shaft. On the back is a handwritten carbon copy of notes titled Famous Gold Mines of Bendigo and Eaglehawk. Notes give yields of gold for alluvial and quartz mining. Deep Shafts in 1904 of which there were eleven with a depth of more than 3000 feet and 53 over 2000 feet and two which were more than 4000 feet. Wages for 1911 for Engine Drivers and Firemen and Boiler Attendants. Newspaper - LONG GULLY HISTORY GROUP COLLECTION: 10 HEAD BATTERY
Copy of a newspaper article titled Old battery to charge-up tunnel tourism. Date written on the paper is 11/1/85. The Thompson's Foundry Battery was re-erected in the Parkin's Reef Reserve after being used at Bola Creek near the NSW border.
