Demonstrates a conductors communication or signal bell made for use on tramcars. Brass Conductor Communication Bell, or signal bell, consisting of cast frame, bell, striker, bell pull part, three nuts to secure the bell to the frame and two rivets securing for the bell pull part. Has at both ends, four screw holes that were used to secure the bell to the roof. A four motor bogie drop centre combination tram of the Melbourne W2 class. Body built by the James Moore and Co. of South Melbourne as a W2 class tram. Delivered to the MMTB Preston Workshops where the electrical and mechanical equipment was fitted. Issued to traffic 18/4/1928. Allocated to Essendon Depot. The tram was part of the Transporting Art project suggested by the artist Clifton Pugh (1924-1990) in Jan. 1978 to the Lord Mayor of Melbourne Cr. Irvin Rockman. The concept was enthusiastically supported by Victorian Premier Rupert Hamer. Clifton Pugh's tram was the second tram to appear. Described by the artist as "The apostle birds in flight, as if the tram has run into a group of them and they're flying along the sides. Then I found the route was to be through Collingwood and Hawthorn football territory and one cannot be one-eyed in that worlds, there are a magpie and a hawk on each side." The tram was retained by the State and stored until 2015 when it was transported to the Museum's Offsite store. Formal ownership was transferred to the Museum during 2019. Conservation planning for the tram's return to service and the restoration of the artwork is underway. 1986 - withdrawn from service following a minor accident and stored. In 2015 tram relocated to the Museum's offsite store and during 2019 transferred to ownership of the Museum. See btm.org.au/trams/504.html for further detail. Timetable board for Camberwell Junction Batman Ave route 70, detailing times that services were scheduled to depart the Junction. Report titled "Melbourne Cable Tramways - Details of Construction and Operation of the Power Houses and Track". Compiled by William R. Pollock, MMTB Power House Superintendent. Report not dated, possibly late to mid 1930's. Consists of 12 pages of notes on the power house, cable operation and repairs, the grip and other aspects of operation, along with 26 appendices of drawings of equipment and parts of the cable tram system. Circular C 7055, dated 31/5/1951 details the introduction of Ultimate ticket machines by the MMTB, commencing 4 June and their use at some tram safety zones and bus stops in the City area. Details their use, day codes, checking of the tickets by tram conductors, and fares and how many tickets are issued for each fare - for example for a 2d fare, two 1d tickets would be issued. Has example tickets for 7 different fares using 5 different tickets or combinations. Circular C 7150, dated 10/10/1951 advising changes to the tickets issued resulting from an increased fare charge that commenced on 21/10. Shows a 9d ticket instead of a 5d and notes that the 9d is temporary. Extracted from the Jan. 1958 issue of Royal Auto Journal by the RACV. Section 13 details the regulations for passing stationary trams and safety zones.
