ESCo Employee Hours Work Record book that has been used by an ESCo/SEC inspector, H. P. James as a record / note book for his personal collection or papers or journal titled "Out of the Past". Book sewn with string in 36 page sections, blank end papers, board covers with stipple paper out sides and Rexene cloth binding. Comprising plain paper end papers and 104 printed pages (52 leaves), with each sheet printed in black on feint ruled paper for recording the hours worked and other details of drivers and conductors employed by ESCo. Printed for daily use, with Day and date page headings - made out for the 1930's. Images: Book - i1 Inside front cover - i2 Members Certificate - i3 Has been used to gather mementos such as photos, articles, newspaper clippings, letters and other miscellaneous documents on Ballarat local history. Handwritten letter from Jim Goodman of 43 Jackson St Long Gully, dated 1/12/1942, to Wal Jack. Gives details of the new line to North Bendigo, issues with construction, sources of rails, timetable services on the line, colour light signals. Sign - enamelled on a metal plate with screw holes in each corner - white letters on black background - fitted to a Victorian Railways Tramcar - regarding having exact fare ready, not standing in gangway, alighting and do not leave or join on the wrong side. Advised by Tony Smith of MTPS 5/8/2016 a sign from a VR tramcar. Has a number of them. Letters hand written by Jack, concerning primarily his observations of steam locomotives and trains in the Ballarat area, with some references to his health, trams, replacement of steam locomotives by diesels (which he did not like). John Southern lived in NSW and was a well known collector of information and photographer on Australian steam locomotives; wrote articles for the ARHS Bulletin and other publications. On first letter, Wal notes he was involved in an industrial accident at the Ballarat Gun Cotton factory in 1943 which severely affected his health.
