Document - Memoir, Diary 1915 Corporal Leonard Gordon Hazard
A transcription of the 1915 diary of Corporal Hazard, aged 25, was done by his daughter-in-law, Joyce Hazard, and given to Legacy in 2009. The original diary is not included. The document includes some photocopies of newspaper articles of some events in the diary and Corporal Hazard's later life and photos of his three brothers who also served. The Hazard brothers were from Brighton, Victoria. From the Foreword: "A personal diary that takes us from the shores of Australia to Gallipoli by way of training in the middle east, a torpedoed troopship and on to a convalescent hospital in England." The troopship was the 'Southland' and the included newspaper report recounts the disaster. Timeline: 8 May 1915 Left Melbourne 10 June Arrived at Heliopolis training camp in Egypt 2 September Was on the 'Southland' which was torpedoed 8 September Arrived on Gallipoli 19 October Wounded in shelling 27 October Arrived Malta on a hospital ship 15 November Arrived South Hampton Docks in UK and transferred to Southern General Hospital in Birmingham 6 December First visit to London and a ride in the underground trains. The Australian Army bugle is a brass musical instrument used primarily for Military Purposes including signaling, commands, ceremonies and other official functions. Corp H.A.Donovan appears to be Herbert Allen Donovan No 448 A Coy 38th Bn, enlisted 31.3.1916 age 21 years, embark for England 20.6.1916, embark for France 22.11.1916, hospital 23.11.1916 with Mumps, rejoin unit 26.1.1917, WIA remaining on duty 7/9.6 1917, WIA 19.6.1917 SW left leg, rejoin unit 27.10.1917, made Cpl, WIA 3rd occasion 29.9.1918 GSW Face, while in England transfers to HQ’s London 28.12.1918, RTA 15.11.1919, discharged from the AIF 4.5.1920..Cigarette case metal near square shape with folding lid, front has been inscribed to make a total of 7 lines in all, rear has very ornate inscribed letters making difficult to work out, inside is a very gold colour with several manufacturers marks on.On front, “Presented to Corp H.A.Donovan from F.K.Shultze for his services in the Great War 1914 - 18, A token of affection from England”. The Royal Australian Infantry Corps (RA Inf) is the parent corps for all infantry regiments of the Australian Army. It was established on 14 December 1948, with its Royal Corps status being conferred by His Majesty King George VI. At her coronation in 1953, Queen Elizabeth II became Colonel-in-Chief of the corps. Major components of the RA Inf include the various battalions of the Royal Australian Regiment and the six state-based Reserve infantry regiments, such as the Royal New South Wales Regiment. The various Regional Force Surveillance and Special Forces units of the Army are also part of the corps. It includes the following information: Miss Lillias May JERRAM Commandant No. 323 Detachment, Victoria [Citation] Loyal and able leadership and service during World War II Service: Joined No.323 (Kew) Detachment in 1937. Commandant in 1944. Miss Jerram did voluntary duty in casualty and wards at St Vincent's Hospital regularly for 6 years. Also duty at the Eye and Ear Hospital and A.R.P. Duty. Helped No.323 Detachment to raise funds amounting to 400 pounds for St. John Theatre at 115th A.G.H., Heidelberg. Blood donor.
