The Volunteers Air Observers was formed in 1941 with the aim of observing aircraft flying over Australia. There were over 24000 civilians volunteering their services and as the military threat to Australia subsided they took on roles as coast and weather watching. This photograph shows a group of local volunteers at their work. B&W photo of Ronald McDonald at Hermon's business in Dandenong on the occasion of the opening of McDonalds in Dandenong. Photo shows a group of people outside Hermon's Refuelling Station (a brick building with a shop and a workshop). A woman stands, holding the hands of two children, aged about seven. A person dressed as Ronald McDonald sits on the back of a sports car. Bill Hermon and a mechanic stand further along. There is a driver in the car. According to Lyn McGillivray, daughter of Bill and Jean, "It was hilarious! Mum & Dad were asked if Ronald McDonald could get changed in our premises. They were in awe that this 'big-wig' would want/need to dress there for the short journey up the street to the new restaurant. I think it was us kids (young adults then) who set them straight!" The Reynolds/ Prior collection of photographs were snapped by Tom Prior, the Uncle of Ivy Reynolds (her mother's brother) around 1900 and the 60 photos in the album give a fine overview of many of the landmarks of Research and Eltham over 100 years ago. lvy is a much loved pioneer who lived in the family home for many years at 106 Thompson Cres Research. Many today living in our township will know Ivy and remember her sister Margaret. Ivy's father, Ernst Richard Reynolds and grandfather, Richard Reynolds, lived at the same address. Ivy's father Richard worked for Mr. Trail on his property in Research. Reynolds Road is named after the family. Mr Tom Prior (wife Eva) worked at the Melbourne zoo. He was very innovative and made his own camera, using the black cloth hood to exclude the light. The photographs are a reminder of the rural nature of Research and Eltham and its rich heritage. Ivy Reynolds would like to share this history, stories and anecdotes with you. If they are not recorded and presented they are lost. It may have belonged to Donald Robert McDonald (b. 1908) who enlisted in the Australian Army in 1942 and was discharged in 1946. He was a bombardier in the 2/4 Aust. Composite A/A Regiment.The instrument is significant because it belonged to a member of a prominent South Warrnambool family. This is a book by Jean McDonald (nee Henderson) telling of her childhood experiences. Born in 1924 Jean McDonald was one of seven children who grew up at Rivery Park, a dairy farm in Grassmere in the 1930s and 40s. She went to school in Cooramook and Warrnambool. This book is of interest as it describes the life of Jean McDonald in Grassmere. It is an important social history of the life and times of a local woman. This is a soft cover book of 189 pages. The front cover has a coloured photograph of three children near a stream and the back cover has an extract from the book and some comments on it. Ian and Jean McDonald were the children of Mr and Mrs Norman McDonald of 42 Gladstone Street, Orbost. This photograph was taken in late January, 1919 on Jean's first day at school.. It was taken at the home of John Rowe, the former headmaster of Orbost Primary School. He was then living opposite the school. Norman Alexander McDonald was a book-keeper at Macarthur‟s and was very musical. He was proprietor of the Capitol Cafe, Nicholson Street, Orbost, selling the business to Mr Coad on 4th December 1947.
