Summary

The book focuses on the life of Flora Macdonald (1722–1790), one of Scotland’s most legendary romantic heroines. She became a monumental historical figure during the Jacobite Rising of 1745 when she famously risked her life to help Prince Charles Edward Stuart ("Bonnie Prince Charlie") escape the government forces after his defeat at the Battle of Culloden.
She famously disguised the prince as her Irish maidservant, "Betty Burke", and smuggled him via boat across the sea to the Isle of Skye. The narrative chronicles her daring rescue, her subsequent imprisonment in the Tower of London, her release, her later migration to North Carolina during the American Revolutionary War, and her ultimate return to Scotland.
