This is a set of 40 photographs taken in 1992 during 4th Field Survey Squadron’s deployment on Operation MIZMAZE 92 in the Kimberley region of Western Australia from the 13th of May to the 14th of July 1992. The area of operations was Wyndham, Halls Creek and Sandfire Flat. It was a two-part operation involving the field completion of topographic maps and the acquisition of mapping control by GPS field parties utilising Texas Instruments TI4100 Global Positioning System receivers. Survey parties conducted field checking of topographic maps and GPS control acquisition in Perentie 110 Series Survey variant FFR Land Rovers. Three Bell Kiowa LOH helicopters provided by 162 Recce Sqn supported field checking and limited deployment of GPS surveys parties. C-l30 Hercules from 36 Sqn supported deployment and extraction of personnel and equipment to and from from the AO. Denis Gibbons (1937 – 2011) Trained with the Australian Army, before travelling to Vietnam in January 1966, Denis stayed with the 1st Australian Task Force in Nui Dat working as a photographer. For almost five years Gibbons toured with nine Australian infantry battalions, posting compelling war images from within many combat zones before being flown out in late November 1970 after sustaining injuries. The images held within the National Vietnam Veterans Museum make up the Gibbons Collection. Warrant Officer Class One Ron Almond served on the 8/13 Victorian Mounted Rifles cadre staff before being posted as a member of the Australian Army Training Team Vietnam (AATTV) in 1969. There he was posted as adviser to 17th Armored Cavalry Squadron. He later returned to 8/13 VMR as Regimental Sergeant Major. The AATTV was a specialist unit of military advisors of the Australian Army that operated during the Vietnam War. Raised in 1962, the unit was formed solely for service as part of Australia's contribution to the war, providing training and assistance to South Vietnamese forces. Initially numbering only approximately 30 men, the size of the unit grew several times over the following years as the Australian commitment to South Vietnam gradually grew, with the unit's strength peaking at 227 in November 1970. Members of the team worked individually or in small groups, operating throughout the country from the far south to the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) in the north. Later they were concentrated in Phước Tuy Province as Australian forces prepared to withdraw from Vietnam. It is believed to be the most decorated Australian unit to serve in Vietnam; its members received over 100 decorations, including four Victoria Crosses, during its existence. The unit was withdrawn from Vietnam on 18 December 1972 and was disbanded in Australia on 16 February 1973. A total of 1,009 men served with the unit over a period of ten years, consisting of 998 Australians and 11 New Zealanders. Henri John ARCHER was born in Brunswick Victoria, Australia, on 27th May 1907, to parents William Thomas and Hetta (née LAWSON) ARCHER. In 1934, Henri married Stella Florence COLLER, and they had 3 children. Living in Balwyn, Victoria, and employed as an Insurance Superintendent, Henri commenced full-time duty as an officer in the Citizen Military Forces from 7th July 1940, until 20th February 1941 (number V7097). His appointment in the rank of Major with the 7th Infantry Battalion was due to him having served part time as an officer in the CMF since 1927. On 21st February 1941, Henri joined the Australian Imperial Force and was appointed as a Major, with the number VX39872. Following the completion of various armoured corps training courses at Puckapunyal, he was taken on strength with the 2nd/8th Armoured Regiment. On 17th April 1943, Henri embarked for service in New Guinea, for a period of 2 months. He again embarked on 3rd September 1943, for service in Rabaul, returning to Australia on 6th February 1944. Following the end of the War, on 8th May 1946, Henri was appointed as a member of the War Crimes Courts with HQ 8MD, and embarked for duty with the War Crimes Trials in Rabaul two days later. Henri returned to Australia on 15th August 1946, and was subsequently transferred to the Reserve of Officers (Armoured Corps) list for the 3rd Military District (Victoria) on 27th November 1946. He was awarded the Efficiency Decoration, as well as the 1939-45 Star, Pacific Star, 1939-45 War Medal and the Australia Service Medal. He was also issued Returned from Active Service Badge number A343705. Henri died in Melbourne on 27th July 1971, aged 64, and his ashes are interred in the Springvale Botanical Cemetery, Banksia Wall ZJ, Niche 01. Survey Corps Flags of this type were produced mid to late 1970's and distributed to all Survey Corps Units. This flag was issued to 4 Fd Svy Sqn and flew during daylight hours on the Unit flag pole at Keswick Barracks, Adelaide from issue until 1995. The flag was signed by about 160 of the 208 attendees at the Ceremonial closing of the Unit on 25 November 1995. A photograph of attendees at the Closing Ceremony is at item 6542.1P and the list of names at 6542.2P and they are stored in Box 278. The Survey Corps Flag that was issued to the Army Survey Regiment is at item 6177 and is stored in Box 218.A full size Corps Flag, purple with 18cm horizontal white stripe. Multi-coloured Survey Corps Badge (less scroll) in the centre of the flag. White header with grommets top and bottom. The Flag has about 160 signatures of past unit members.
