‘The Art of the Japanese Package’ was an exhibition that toured to 10 Australian and 11 New Zealand public galleries in 1979 and 1980. The touring exhibition comprised 221 objects of traditional Japanese packaging which extended from ceramics, wood and paper to woven fibre containers. At the conclusion of the tour, The Japan Foundation and the Crafts Board of the Australia Council donated the vast majority of the exhibition to the Ararat Gallery for its permanent collection. Combining the natural qualities of bamboo, paper and straw with delicate craftsmanship, these unique objects express Japanese aesthetics as applied through fibre crafts. In Japan, the qualities and traits of natural materials are exploited rather than hidden. The texture of straw, the septa of bamboo are not concealed but lovingly incorporated into the whole. In 1979 Hideyuki Oka, curator of ‘The Art of the Japanese Package’ wrote: “In no way self-conscious or assertive, these wrappings have an artless and obedient air that greatly moves the modern viewer. They are whispered evidence of the Japanese ability to create beauty from the simplest products of nature. They also teach us that wisdom and feeling are especially important in packaging because these qualities, or the lack of them, are almost immediately apparent. What is the use of a package if it shows no feeling?” The descriptions of the featured objects were written by Hideyuki Oka, curator of ‘The Art of the Japanese Package’, 1979. Gift of the Japan-Australia Foundation and the Crafts Board of the Australia Council, 1981An elegant wooden box, fashioned in the style of boxes used for gifts to the emperor some eight or nine centuries ago, is filled with a Kyoto confection called Gion Chigo Mochi. The Gion is one of Kyoto's entertainment districts, chigo are children dressed in ceremonial Buddhist costume for one of the city's numerous festivals, and mochi are cakes of steamed and pounded rice. These glasses appear to be mainly sunglasses or ones for outdoors as the tinted glass and the shades indicate this. They would have been used commonly in the past (100 years ago or more) by those able to afford the cost of the item. Eye glasses were first used in the 13th century and bi-focals were invented in the late 18th century.These items have no known local significance and are kept as interesting souvenirs of eye glasses used in the past.This is a pair of spectacles or glasses in a case. The glasses are made of thin metal and contain dark tinted glass. The eye-glass pieces are oval in shape. On the outer rims of the eye-glass pieces are two curved metal mesh covers attached to the metal rims by two screws on each side. These act as shades for the sun and side protection for the eyes and fold down when not in use. One of the shades is detached from its metal rim. This photograph of John Pascoe Fawkner was commissioned by artist William Strutt in 1857. In 1907 Strutt gave the photograph to Victoria's London agent, Mr. Lake, to be presented to the Victorian Parliamentary Library. In a letter to Mr. Lake now in the library's archives, Strutt describes how he had planned to make use of the photograph in his artistic practice, and when finished with it, had promised to give the photograph to the Victorian Parliamentary Librarian Charles Ridgway (c.1801-1865). This watering can would have been used some decades ago to water pot plants and small plants in the garden requiring individual watering. Today watering cans are still used but mostly they are made of plastic although some cans are made in other materials for decorative reasons. Enamel is a hardy material but it chips when the object is knocked or dropped. This watering can has no known local provenance but is retained as an example of a common household item from early in the 20th century. This is an oval-shaped enamel watering can. Article in the Camperdown Chronicle (Vic. : 1877 - 1954), Saturday 7 June 1902, page 3 "PERSONAL. "Punch" has the following with reference to the death of the late Mr. Charles Shuter:—The cable message which was received last Monday an-nouncing the death on last Saturday of Mr. Charles Shuter of Wykenham Lodge, Toorak, will occasion much regret. When Mr. Shuter arrived in Victoria about forty-seven years ago he was soon appointed a goldfields commissioner and used to relate that the office was full of responsibility, he had frequently for his only pillow nuggets covered with cloth for safety. After some years he was appointed police magistrate, while still quite young, and held this office till he was pensioned some years ago. Then, when the Old Age Pensions came into force, he was recalled from retirement and put on the commission. A few years ago the heart ailment from which he had long suffered began to grow more severe, and he left with his wife and youngest daughter to travel in Europe. Recent letters showed that he was steadily growing worse at Nice, where he was living quietly, and he succumbed on 31st May. His widow, who was a Miss Lord, survives him, and nine of their eleven children. The eldest son, a doctor, died many years ago. Then came Mr. Frank Shuter, a grazier near Albury ; Mrs. Murray Puckle, of Toorak ; Mr. Clement Shuter, solicitor, and Dr. Ernest Shuter, both settled near Camperdown; Mr. Edward Shuter, surveyor; the late Mrs. L. Bernard Hall, Mrs. George Higghins, of Malvern ; Mr. Joseph Shuter, in the English Navy; Captain Reginald Shuter, of the Royal Irish Fusiliers, who has for some time been on active service in the South African war; and Miss Lucy Shuter, who was travelling with her parents. Mr. Shuter's accounts of the early days of the colonies are most interesting. It was constructed in 1922 alongside the previous suspension bridge. Its building was a combined effort of the Victorian Railways and the Country Roads Board at a cost of 35,000 pounds. Made at a forge outside the camp 3 perimeter by Gotthilf Kaltenbach & Manuel Kaltenbach. It is made from British Army scrap metal. Used for fine metal turning. The Witworth gauges were not used in Central Europe after 1918. The motor that was on it was a small electric sewing machine motor which was discarded about ten years ago in Germany. A ring called the hoop is used to attach the head to the shell, and the tuning bolts are tightened to tighten the head.
