Digital image of two reports and a letter - 41 A4 pages Report - titled "Melbourne's Trams and Tramways - Statement of Heritage Significance", Working Paper 1.1, dated May 2000, by Convergence Design Pty Ltd and Boyce Pizzey Strategic - Page 3 is missing - looks at the development of Melbourne's trams, the element of significance, the tramway system as an entity, Social and cultural influencers, the technological development, including tram design. The two page statement notes the tramway system as an evolving entity and technology. And included document is "A Brief History of Melbourne's Trams and tramways", considers the history of the tramway system, cable cars, W class cars, buses, WW2, postwar developments, Robert Risson and a heritage assessment. There is reference to maps and attachments, but these have not be included other than the sources. Black and white photograph of a lightly loaded cable car set, trailer 415, eastbound in Bourke St, nearing Russell St. Set has destination of Nicholson St. The Conductor and Gripman are both on the grip car - "gossiping". In the background are signs for Sharpe's store, Parers Hotel, Lewis's and Normans. On the underside of the photograph written in black ink "Cable Tram in Bourke St Jan 1937" Noelle Jones - 24/5/2021 It is no later than 1946, as Maples purchased the Love & Lewis business (194-6 Bourke St) in that year (the business was being sold by the executors of the owner). Note also that Parer's (not Parkers) Hotel, at 200 Bourke Street, was established in the 1880s by the Parer Brothers, originally from Spain. The most famous member of the family was Damien Parer, the WWII photographer. The building was demolished in 1960, and is the site of the Midcity Arcade. Sharpes bought the property on the left (202-4 Bourke St) in 1954, after being tenants for 20 years. Contains an article on page 8, "Keeping tram lines clean" and "Scrubber Cars" - featuring Frank Reale-Key posing in front of Scrubber 8W. Also has a photo of scrubber No. 11. Gives a background to the cars, when they are used, operated by Civil Branch. Gives hours of use and crews. Another item is "Tram centenary celebrations a success" - Event and cavalcade of trams on 11/11/1985, celebrating the commencement of the cable car services in Melbourne. Ticket - light brown paper, "Combined Fare Ticket" - MMTB, over printed with a red 5d, and Ticket Number A B 425191. with conditions of travel on the front. On the rear is printed in red ink is an advert for B. Matthews Pty Ltd, with head office at 102-110 Toorak Road, South Yarra, advertising a Motor Funeral Service. Dean Filgate advised 24-12-2020: Unfortunately an un-used example, from the same block that most collectors obtained one for their collection ! There are genuine used examples of similar 6d (purple overprint) tickets, however I cannot find my "files" about these: there were at least two places this type of ticket was used in the early to mid-1930s. The two photographs show cable trams being shunted into the Brunswick Cable Tram Depot or car house from Sydney Road. The first shows a horse pulling a bogie tram trailer into the car house while the second shows the grip being pushed in by hand. Note the raised position of the grip when this shunting task is performed - 1920s. This cable tram Gripman’s badge, or driver’s badge, was part of a tram driver’s uniform. The inscriptions on the front of the badge identify it as belonging to Gripman number 14, at the South Melbourne Car House depot of the Tramways Board. The Gripman Badge would be re-issued whenever another Gripman takes over the position. Cable trams were invented in America in 1873. In Melbourne, cable trams were in use from 1885 until 1940, with a network of up to 1200 cable cars or 'dummies' and trailers travelling at around 9.5 miles (15km) per hour along 46 miles (74km) of double tracks. The Gripman drove the dummy car, operating the heavy levers to connect the gripping gears to the cable installed in a slot in the road. To turn at intersections he would skilfully disconnect, freewheel around the corner and carefully reconnect to the continuously operating steel cable.
