The P.S Adelaide was re-launched back into the Murray River from the Hopwood Gardens where it had been on display from 1960 in April 1984. The re-launch attracted a lot of attention and took several weeks to achieve. A slipway had to be dug into the bank near Paddlewheel Park. Crowds attended each day. The P.S Pevensy was still bearing the name P.S Philadelphia from it's role in the TV Mini series "All The Rivers Run". In this photo the P.S Philadelphia is welcoming the P.S Adelaide back into the river.This photograph is significant because it shows the re-launch of the P.S Adelaide back into the Murray river. The P.S Adelaide is the second oldest wooden hulled paddle steamer still operating I the world. It also shows the role that P.S Pevensy played in the TV mini series, 'All The Rivers Run." A razor strop is flexible strip of leather or canvas used to maintain a shaving edge on a thin blade such as a straight razor. Fine powdered jeweler's rouge or other pastes can be added as an abrasive to polish the blade. The strop may be a hanging strip or a hand-held paddle. This one is a hanging strop. Strops were quite commonly found in barber shops and homes before the invention of the safety razor, They are still used for sharpening tool blades.This item is an example of the self-reliance shown by rural families when household necessities were not readily available.A flexible double-layered horse hide leather strop. This image is one of a series of photographs taken by Melbourne based photographers Stevenson and McNicoll who visited Bacchus Marsh and its nearby districts between September and November 1883. James Elijah Crook settled in Bacchus Marsh in 1841 and soon after held a licence for a lodging house on the Portland Road. In about 1845, he built the first Woolpack Inn, a slab building of eight rooms. This was replaced in 1850 with a “stately country villa” of brick and stone. The stables were also built in 1850 to accommodate twenty horses. In 1851, Crook established a coach service to the goldfields. After being in use as a Court of Petty Sessions, the Woolpack Inn lost its licence and closed in 1862. After this date, Crook took an interest in horse-breeding and continued to use the stables for his horses. His most notable success was with his horse, Saladin, which won the Australia Cup in 1872, after two exciting dead-heats with The Flying Dutchman. James Elijah Crook died in 1889. The Woolpack Inn and Stables were sold and then used as a hay and corn store. In 1910 the site was leased for use as an abattoir. The Woolpack Inn was demolished in 1931. The site is still in use as an abattoir. Little remains of the original stables.Small sepia 'carte de viste' style unframed photograph on card with gold border framing photograph. Housed in the Jeremeas Family Album which contains photographs of Bacchus Marsh and District in 1883 by the photographers Stevenson and McNicoll. The photo is of a gable-roofed commercial stables with shingled roofing, and white-washed render to the walls, standing in a large cleared yard. There is a skillion extension to the south-west corner. On the front (northern) wall can be seen a door and three windows, two large and one small paned window in the centre. The eastern window is paned, while the western window has louvres and a pull-out blind. Three S shaped stays can be seen on the northern wall. Along the western wall are two more windows and doors. A mound of hay lies at the north-western corner. Standing at the front of the stables is a group of five men and two boys, one holding a large dog. Four of the men are dressed in workman’s clothing and some are holding tools of their trade. The man at the back is wearing more formal clothes and has distanced himself from the workmen. The pole against which one of the workmen is leaning appears to have damage along one side. A temple tomb in the form of a Greek temple with a triangular pediment. Dark pillars on a flat, paved base support the plinth of the memorial. The memorial is situated on lawn, surrounded by trees and shrubs. Between the pillars, a glass enclosure can be clearly seen. The enclosure was removed at a later date. Harold Desbrowe-Annear designed the Springthorpe Memorial, while Bertram Mackennal sculpted the statuary on the sarcophagus. William Guilfoyle is belived to have advised on the design of the garden.An early black and white postcard of the Springthorpe Memorial in the Boroondara General Cemetery. There are numerous often undated postcards showing the memorial. This example features two women standing at left and a man at right. Flies are plentiful and a problem especially in Australia's summer. Farms were a breeding ground for flies that bred in cow manure. Fly-wire was used to keep flies away from food as well as light cloth covers. Farmers could use this sieve to fill with sand etc. to sort the sizes and also to use for eg. wheat to sort the grain. Yabbies are trapped in the creek or river by leaving food in the net for the yabby to crawl into.Food covers were used by residents of the Kiewa Valley especially as many of them were dairy farmers. This photo shows a river boat under construction on the eastern bank of the Murray river in the Echuca Port area where the boat shed and swimming pool were located in the 1970's. The boat shed can be seen through the trees but the swimming pool isn't visible. There is another river boat behind, possibly the Canberra.This photograph is of historical and social significance in that it shows the condition of the Murray river in the 1970's at an area used as the local swimming area on the Echuca side of the river. There is a river boat under construction (the frame work shows a bottom and top storey on the boat). This could be the Pride of the Murray. We have an original B&W copy donated by Ian Barkla and a larger one copied by Ken Hall. The Barkla original has a sticker with his reference details on the back. The photo records a Vintage Train tour to Healesville on 1 October 1966. The Lilydale to Healesville line opened on 1 March 1889. The last steam train on the line ran in 1957 and the last passenger service was in 1980. The line reopened as a tourist railway in 2010. Although the photo was taken on a misty day, houses in Windsor Crescent can just be seen in the background.
