In 1874 Dr Rastrick ...The land was bought in 1853 by John Smith and he built the house. The house was offered for sale in 1866 when George Barnacle bought it and named it 'Warwick Cottage' after his birth place. it was offered to short term tenants such as the surveyor Creed, Miss Boes a dressmaker and O'Doherty the Catholic school teacher. In 1874 Dr Rastrick was a tenant and in 1878 it was occupied by the grocer William Searle and his sister a dressmaker. Barnacle offered the cottage for sale in October 1885 advising that the iron roofed stone cottage , 4rooms, detached kitchen and outhouses had been previously occupied by W.C.Uncles and at that time William Muhleg Carpenter. It ultimately sold privately to Miss Beatty and she continued to rent it to tenants. James Kilbride was the tenant in 1887-88. The cottage was sold in 1888 to Isaac Smale. The house continued its tradition of housing dressmakers with Mrs Barby carrying on that profession in the 1940's,50's and 60's. St Joseph's Catholic School in Orbost was planned from ...This flag was used by St Joseph's School, Orbost at assemblies. St Joseph's Catholic School in Orbost was planned from 1913 when the town's population was increasing rapidly. It wasn't until 1923 that the school was built in Raymond Street next to St Colman's Church. Fifty-five students were initially enrolled and taught in two rooms. When the numbers increased to 170 work began on extensions which were completed in 1959. St Joseph's school had classes to Form 4 at one stage. Later on Form 2 was the highest level. However, after Nagle College at Bairnsdale built a new school on the Lindenow Road site, a Nagle College school bus ran from Orbost and the school was reduced to Grade 6. It was also about this time that the last of the St Joseph teaching nuns left Orbost. From 1969 to the early 1980s the secondary St Joseph students attended Orbost High School for the practical subjects of Woodwork and Home Economics. Today enrolments reflect the declining population of the district. This item is an example of an item used in an Orbost school in the second half of 20th century.A cloth Australian National Flag which has a blue background. The Union Jack is in the upper left corner. Below the Union Jack is a white Commonwealth Star. The Southern Cross is shown on the right hand side of the flag in white. Peter’s Catholic School East Bentleigh 1865 on land donated ...The City of Moorabbin Historical Society was formed c 1960 by a group of Moorabbin residents who were concerned that the history of the area should be preserved. A good response to a call for items related to the historical area of Moorabbin Shire brought donations of a wide variety of artefacts which are now preserved by the current members of CMHS at Box Cottage Museum . Helen Stanley, Secretary of CMHS, began producing a Newsletter for members in April 2007 to provide current information and well researched items of historical interest.Helen Stanley has produced a bi-monthly Newsletter, 2007 - 2013, for the members of the City of Moorabbin Historical Society that contains well researched interesting historical items, notification of upcoming events, current advice from Royal Australian Historical Society , Museums Australia Victoria and activities of Local Historical Societies. The Newsletter is an important record of the activities of the CMHS.2 x A4 paper printed on 4 sides Issue 11 of the bi-monthly, City of Moorabbin Historical Society Newsletter produced by Society member and Secretary, Mrs Helen Stanley in April 2009. The school building holds historical, social and spiritual significance to Echuca being the former home of Echuca's founder, Henry Hopwood. The diocese purchased the original building for 1,000 pounds. The school opened as a co-educational school on 22/3/1886 with 16 boys and 7 girls. It's first enrolment was a non-Catholic boy. By the end of 1886 there were 30 pupils. The boarding school opened on 4/5/1886 with 6 students. The chapel (to the north of this building) was built in 1889.
