A very damaged, stained red antique hardcover book for girls with the title printed in gold lettering in the middle of the front cover. There is a gold outlined drawing of a girl sitting looking out of a window. There are red flowers and green leaves decorating the cover. The spine has the title printed in gold letters with red flowers and green leaves.On the front right side end paper is an inscription for a Sabbath School award dated 1882. The frontispiece balck and white illustration is of a girl sitting at a table at a fair. Tissue paper protects it. The title page has the title, author Howe Benning as well as publisher details. 296Pp. Throughout are black and white illustrations. There are four pages at the back are lists of Recent Gift Books published by the Religious Tract Society. A group of people with flowers and gifts after an Annual Demonstration. They appear to have been thanked for their efforts in producing the demonstration. The lady with the largest box of flowers was Miss Enez Domec-Carre, Miss Williams on far left was the Elocution teacher, other names are unknown. Enez was the instructor for the girls' classes for many years, she organised many annual demonstrations and was held in high regard by Legacy. The library at Legacy House is named in her honour. See also a newspaper article at 00978 which outlines her achievements, a summary of her career at 00458 and 00129, and her 80th birthday at 01541. She was a former Miss Victoria and was known for her physical education skills and for introducing grace and culture to Melbourne. In 1932 she joined Melbourne Legacy as assistant to Mrs Gilles (wife of a Legatee) later became the chief instructor of girls' physical education until she retired aged 65. In the post World War II baby boom the Legacy evening classes were attended by about 400 girls. She helped organise Legacy Widows and Legatee wives to sew the costumes for performances. Among her proudest moments was a display by 1000 Junior Legatees at the MCG during the 1954 visit of Queen Elizabeth II. As well her work for Legacy she ran physical education, ballroom dancing and debutante preparation classes in Windsor, Elsternwick, Gardenvale and Geelong. She also held a position on the Board of Studies and as director of physical education in Catholic Schools. Recognition of her work included being awarded an MBE in 1971. And in 1997 she received Legacy's highest award, the title of Guest of Honour, for her years of service. The year is unknown. Throughout the year Melbourne Legacy provided classes for Junior Legatees such as dancing, gymnastics and Eurythmics. The Demonstration was an annual event to showcase their skills. Melbourne Legacy conducted Annual Demonstrations / Parades from 1928 through to the late 1970's, usually held at Melbourne Town Hall or Olympic Pool Stadium. The beautiful costumes were made by members of the Junior Legacy Mothers' Club and the Melbourne Legacy Wives' Association.Miss Domec-Carre worked for Legacy for many years and had a significant impact on the lives of many junior legatees. Items are part of a collection of Legacy items from Valma Hutchinson (nee Wigg), a former junior legatee. Valma was accepted into Junior Legacy club in 1940 when she was about 10 years old. She had collected the newspaper clippings of notices in the newspapers for Miss Carre's 90th birthday and also her death notices. The sentiments expressed show how much she was respected by the former Junior Legacy girls. The photocopy includes a picture of 90th birthday celebrations for Miss Carre at Legacy house. A copy of the photo of the girls at Mt Evelyn camp had already been received from Valma Hutchinson (nee Wigg) and is at 01437. It is mentioned that she and her good friend June were in the photo and would have been 16 at the time. Miss Carre is also seen, seated wearing red, in the photo of L/- Grattan's 100th. More photos of Legatee Grattan's 100th are at 00964. A note sent to Legacy with the items mentions Legatee Grattan walked Valma down the aisle at her wedding and that Valma and her daughter would frequently put flowers on his plot in Springvale cemetery.An example of the long term friendship of Junior Legatees that they attend reunions and stay in contact. The newsletter from July 1954. It featured Governor Sir Dallas Brooks on a carousel horse with a girl on the cover. The president's introduction talked ofvalue of books and reading. There was a piece on the death of Legacy founder Stan Savige and has a photo of funeral cortege. Pages showed news from the different Boys and Girls Classes and photos showcased the annual demonstration. Also photos of the Legacy library and the medical and dental care given to junior legatees. Also an article and photo about speech training by Miss Williams. Photo of mothers working hard at sewing costumes for the girls classes. There was an article about the royal visit of to the MCG and the JLs that presented flowers to the Queen. A newsletter published by Legacy in this format for many years from 1942. It mentions "Issued from time to time for Private Circulation among the Sons and Daughters of Deceased Service men and Merchant Seamen who served their Country during the War of 1914-18, or the present War". Many articles on the work of Legacy, including features on boys classes, girls classes, camps, the residences and where their past residents ended up. This book was a prize given by the Warrnambool Baptist Sunday School to Richard Petterd in 1888. The Warrnambool Baptist Church was established in 1864 in a small cottage in Kinross Avenue in Warrnambool at the home of Mr and Mrs Andrew Griffiths. In 1869 a church was built in Koroit Street and enlarged in 1974. From time to time more improvements were made and the church still operates from the same site today. A Sunday School was established in 1865. Richard Forrester Petterd, born in 1878 in Warrnambool, was the son of George Petterd and Mary Ann Petterd, nee Warn. He married Susanna McConnell in 1903 and died in 1935. A daughter, Muriel, married Frederick Wooles in 1933 and it was their son, Kenneth from whose estate this book has come to be added to the Society’s collection.This book is most significant as it is a rare memento from the early days of the Warrnambool Baptist Sunday School and it belonged to Richard Petterd whose family was involved in businesses in Warrnambool as picture framers, stationery and fancy goods shop proprietors and estate commission agents. The book is a very attractive example of Victorian-era children’s books. This is a hard cover book of 80 pages It has a multi-coloured front cover depicting three children reading a book with a window behind them and floral decorations and two birds surrounding the three girls. The red binding is somewhat torn. The back cover has black and white etchings of flowers and children and advertisements for other books available. A vintage 1903 hardcover children’s book with the title Chatterbox printed with white lettering at the top of the front cover, which has a green coloured background with an illustration in a large circle showing a girl winding a handle on a wishing well in a garden. The publisher details are printed at the bottom, with Price Three Shillings printed in red letters at the very top. The covers have broken away from the cotton bound spine. The faded light tan coloured back cover has an advertisement for EPPS'S (Breakfast) COCOA. with details of its efficacy and use for good health. The manufacturer details are added at the bottom. Inside the front cover are advertisements for Bird's Custard Powder and Robinson's Patent barley "in powder form". The frontispiece coloured illustration inside depicts a young girl dressed in wintry clothes carrying a lidded cane basket walking along a road on a windy autumn day. The title of the picture is 'Going with the Gale'. The title page has the title plus Edited by J. Erskine Clarke, M.A and publisher details with a black lined illustration of children, a woman with children at her knee reading and flowers. There are further coloured plates in the collection. This local flower show award from 1905 together with others in the collection demonstrates the significance of such shows as a form of social activity as well as horticultural science over the decades. It is also an example of church groups being involved in the social fabric of the community and activities that embraced all segments of the community of different religious persuasions as the certificate was awarded to Michael Taffe, a Roman Catholic in a Church of England enclave. The Girls' Friendly Society founded in England in 1875 was an Anglican Church group which formed to give maids and female domestic staff spiritual guidance and social activities for their days off. The first local Australian branch was formed in Adelaide in 1879 with branches being established in Ballarat from the 1880s. Other certificates from 1899 to the 1930s in this collection of Taffe awards come from a range of faiths and community groups. This award is one of a family collection from the nineteenth century through to the twenty-first century further demonstrating horticultural enthusiasts exhibition participation across generations.This certificate evidences one of the activities of the Girls Friendly Society St Paul's Branch in a community event that embraced the local community. The float is of grass and flowers. Three children are on the float holding signs of Heat, Power, ?. A girl stands in a decorative shell. The street scene is lined with many people and cars of the day are parked at the road edge. The second is of the White Christmas Golden Square Mothers Club. A truck is decorated with a large Christmas tree with children dressed for winter. At the right is a sign*Bendigo Olympic Pool Fun is now open* on the balcony with a crowd of people. The streets are lined with spectators with flags flying above the parade. The Third is a float carrying a train with VR in flowers on the side and a floral display on the float. Ann Dale (nee Lees) was given this frame by her younger brother Thomas Chamberlain Lees, who was eighteen at that time. Thomas was the youngest son and seventh child of Lees and Sarah (nee Chamberlain) Lees. Ann loved her little brother’s artistic talents, which are demonstrated in this frame he designed and carefully carved for her. Thomas had cleverly finished the back with timber pieces around the images, and a section of a 1904 calendar. His “GOOD LUCK” is below the image of Ann, her husband Ellis Dale and their five children, c 1900. Sadly, Thomas died in 1911, aged 25. Ellis Dale’s father, William, was a quarryman who sailed from Yorkshire to Australia in 1852. He later bought land for Dale’s Quarries on the edge of Warrnambool in the area of Dale and Aberline roads. From the age of about eleven, Ellis and his brother worked in the quarry beside their father. In 1890 Ellis Dale married Ann Lees. Ann had lived nearby at Wangoom with her parents, Lees and Sarah Lees, who had had her photograph taken when she was a little girl, wearing her black dress. Ellis built a bluestone cottage for himself and Ann on his father’s land in Dales Road. He later added weatherboard rooms, and they named their finished home “Latrigg”. Early in their marriage Ellis recycled some empty dynamite boxes from their quarry to build a cupboard with drawers for Ann’s flat irons and other ironing equipment. The cupboard was used by future generations until recently, when Ann’s granddaughter, Betty Stone, donated it as part of the Chamberlain Dale Lees Collection. The ribbon is a souvenir of the first 'Australia Day', held 30 July 1915. This was not the celebration of nationhood as we know it today, but a national fundraising effort during World War I. Across Australia, this day was set aside for fundraising to assist wounded soldiers returning to Australia during WWI. In Linton Australia Day 1915 was celebrated with a jumble sale, raffles, and the collection of donations. There was also a stall outside the Shire Offices, attended by a group of girls dressed as Red Cross nurses, which sold flowers, postcards, toys and souvenirs. Mrs Surman, then Stella Todd, was one of this group of girls, along with her sister Millie Todd. (See photograph, Registration no. 055.) This photograph was taken on the first 'Australia Day', held 30 July 1915. Other days had been set aside to raise funds for specific nations, e.g. 'Belgian Day' had been held earlier in 1915..
