The original Tawonga District Hospital was situated at the corner of Ryders Lane and Kiewa Valley Highway. The construction was initiated by the Hospital and Charities Commission with considerable assistance from the SEC. The building was transported from Bonegilla where it was originally part of the Bonegilla Military Hospital. It was officially opened on September 24, 1949. Heamostop is a haemostatic agent, prescribed for the management of blood loss in menorrhagia, and after surgery. It reduces bleeding from very small blood vessels (capillaries). The chemical in this vial is in a powder form. This product is now supplied in the form of tablets and injections. The text on the vial reads "Haemostop stops bleeding. After swabbing the wound, Haemostop should be sprinkled or sprayed on as quickly as possible. Enough should be used to leave a definite dry residue on the wound. The Northern District School of Nursing opened in 1950 in to address the issues around nurse recruitment, training and education that had previously been hospital based. The residential school was to provide theoretical and in-house education and practical training over three years. The students would also receive practical hands-on training in the wards of associated hospitals. The Northern District School of Nursing operated from Lister House, Rowan Street, Bendigo. It was the first independent school of nursing in Victoria and continued until it closed in 1989. The book "The First of its Kind" was published in 2015. Printed in Bendigo by "Bendigo Modern Press".
