Album - Ringer's River by Des Martin - Plate 19 - Before the race stewards
In the jockey room after weight is declared correct an infuriated Nugent accuses O'Day and O'Hara of deliberately "taking him on" for no obvious reason. Calm as ever O'Day prevents action between the other two, and the three of them are called before the steward. Nobody "splits", and, though he declares himself dissatisfied with the explanation that Nugent tried to get through where there was no room and just had to pull out and go round, the stipendiary steward closes the incident. All of which adds fuel to a fast growing feud between Nugent and the O'Haras. The album and images are significant because they document literature written by a prominent member of the Wodonga community. The presentation of this precis was supported by several significant district families and individuals.Ringer's River Album Coloured photo Plate 19des martin, many a mile, ringer's river, northeast victoria stories -

Photograph - Hayley Millar-Baker, Hayley Millar-Baker, Even if the race is fated to disappear 2 (Peeneeyt Meerreeng / Before, Now, Tomorrow), 2017
Land is mother, we live with the land – not off the land. This artwork comes from Millar-Baker’s Toongkateeyt (Tomorrow) series, which sees the mashing of Countries to create imagined landscapes that embody both birth country (Wathaurong) and ancestral country (Gunditjmara). Toongkateeyt takes an introspective exploration of contemporary Indigenous connection to land and identity post-colonisation. Using images she took herself and those taken by her grandfather, Millar-Baker focuses on places that have played an important part in her family’s intergenerational experiences. Each work in this series is built from hundreds of individual layers and photographs. Each rock, tree, animal etc. was photographed individually and cut out to create a new landscape depicting the ‘mashing’ of ‘countries’ and a personalised experience existing today as an Aboriginal person. photograph -

A start on the construction of Bogong Creek race line was made at the commencement of winter in 1948. Work proceeded in the following years when work on the High Plains was not practicable. In January, 1951 the special trimming machine, the special slip form and concrete mixing and placing equipment was put into service. A shortage of cement caused some delays as well as a sudden financial recession. The race line was completed and put into service in 1952. An historical record showing the machinery used , the number of workers needed at any one time ( about 16 in this photo) and the mountainous terrain of the area. From Wikipedia: The MacRobertson Trophy Air Race (also known as the London to Melbourne Air Race) took place in October 1934 as part of the Melbourne Centenary celebrations. The race was devised by the Lord Mayor of Melbourne, Sir Harold Gengoult Smith,[1] and the prize money of £15,000 was provided by Sir Macpherson Robertson, a wealthy Australian confectionery manufacturer, on the conditions that the race be named after his MacRobertson confectionery company, and that it was organised to be as safe as possible.[2] A further condition was that a gold medal be awarded to each pilot who completed the course within 16 daysClear glass sandwich plate, commemorating the Air Race from UK to Australia.
