In October 1863 the Rev. James Bickford visited Sale to explore the possibilities of establishing a Methodist cause there. In March 1864 a group of 8 local men petitioned Conference to appoint a minister. The men were: Nehemiah Guthridge, G. Ross, J.H. Walters, J.E. Derrick, G.E. Hawkins, R. Gibbs, J.J. Drew, J. James. The Rev. Henry Baker arrived in the Gippsland Circuit later in 1864. The first Methodist services in Sale were held in the Mechanics Institute, but by July 1865 a Methodist church had been opened for worship. A Sunday School was constructed in 1886. The Sale Methodist Church was renovated at a cost of 2500 pounds in 1951. The new Sale Methodist Church was opened on 25 September 1965.B & W interior view of the new Sale Methodist Church. Mrs Mary Holden (1843 - 1930) was the mother of the Rev Albert Thomas Holden CBE V.D., B.A., D.D. A charabanc or "char-à-banc" is a type of horse-drawn vehicle or early motor coach, usually open-topped, common in Britain during the early part of the 20th century. It has "benched seats arranged in rows, looking forward, commonly used for large parties, whether as public conveyances or for excursions." It was especially popular for sight-seeing or "works outings" to the country or the seaside, organised by businesses once a year. The name derives from the French char à bancs ("carriage with wooden benches"), the vehicle having originated in France in the early 19th century. In Australia a modern similar type of bus or motorcoach, with a lateral door for each row of seats, survived up to the 1970s and was referred to as side loader bus; but all or most of them were not open-topped. Words on the building on the south west corner of Sturt Street are visible. "NATIONAL MUTUAL BUILDING". This building was used by Mark's Jewellers, and then Allan Bros. Jewellers. The next building has the writing "ARGUS" and Printers, Bookbinders, Stationers, on it. This was known as Berry Anderson's. Charles Walter MURRAY was not a prisoner of war. His next of kin is Fanny Bertha MURRAY (wife).
