This ladies suit belonged to an elderly neighbour of the donor, Margot Miller, who lived in Black Street, Brighton in the 1970s. The neighbour had offered Margot a selection of her old clothing, dating from the early 20th century, as she wanted somebody to hold onto and care for the items after she died. Before Margot could take the items the neighbour was moved into a nursing home and, while cleaning out the house, the woman's son took the clothing to the tip with a load of rubbish. Margot happened to see him leave and was able to follow him and retrieve the clothes. They remained in the Miller family for many years; some were worn by Margot's daughters and some were ultimately passed on to others. Based on our research, we believe that the suit's original owner may have been Julia Richards (nee O'Keefe, c. 1882-1976), who lived at 59 Black Street during this time. Born in Ireland, Julia emigrated to Queensland in 1900. She married William Alfred Richards in 1911 and lived with him in Ayr, near Townsville, where they ran a hotel. It is unclear what became of William, but by the mid-1920s Julia and her two children were living in Brighton, where she remained until her death in 1976, aged 94.Cream wool ladies suit consisting of a jacket and skirt. Jacket is partially lined with silk, quilted around shoulders. Fastens with four self-covered buttons, one attached to a belt. Two box pleats at front and back, each featuring four decorative self-covered buttons at the waist. Upturned cuffs, each with two buttons. Federation University Australia was established on 1 January 2014. Formerly known as the University of Ballarat, its enabling legislation was the University of Ballarat Amendment (Federation University Australia) Act 2013. Although formally created as a University in 1994, the University of Ballarat had a lineage back to 1870 with the establishment of the School of Mines Ballarat, making it the third institution of higher learning to be established in Australia and the first to be established in regional Australia. This photograph was printed from a glass negative held in the Society's picture collection. The original glass negative is part of a set donated to the Society by Ian McKenzie, a professional photographer in Kew. The grave of Violet Laura Steel (1892-1914), after 1914. Violet Laura Steel, was the daughter of Charles Joseph Steel and Julia Harrington. She was born 31 October 1892 in the Police camp in Echuca, and died, aged 21, on 22 May 1914 at her father’s home ‘Maescourt’ in Gladstone Parade, Elsternwick. The billycart was possibly decorated for celebrations associated with Empire Day. Image was originally copied by Chatham Primary School for inclusion in their pictorial history "A Patchwork of People - Chatham Past and Present" [ISBN 0 646 29370 2], by Susan Barnett and Julia Ashby, published in 1996 for the school's 70th anniversary. Date is that given by descendant Julia Thornton. William Ernest Palstra married May Aurunui Holdaway (1885-1964) in 1920; this was their first and only home. They had 3 children, Margaret, Jocelyn and William. The family were connected with the Canterbury Salvation Army Corps. William's father was a Salvation Army officer; he spent his early life in South Africa. Prior to marriage he lived in Middlesex Road, Surrey Hills. He was an air force officer. He joined the RAAF in 1925. The family was in London when William was killed on the maiden flight of the Airship R101 to Karachi. It crashed near Beauvais in France. His widow and children returned to live at 60 Guildford Road, Surrey Hills. The donor Margaret Thornton was a daughter of William and May Palstra; one of her daughters, Julia Thornton still lives in the house in 2023. The houses across the road were demolished in the 1970s to build the Surrey Hills Salvation Army Church.This home is one of very few in the area which has been continuously owned by the same family over 3 generations. This is a passenger ticket for the Screw Steamship "Otway".It was built in 1872 at Glasgow for the Warrnambool Steam Packet Company. She traded to and from the Western Ports until 1878.when she was sold for the Melbourne West Australian trade. She was broken up at Sydney in 1924. The Warrnambool Steam Packet Company commenced in 1868 and operated on the Western Ports run using the ships "Edina", "Rob Roy", "Otway", " Nelson" and "Julia Percy".In 1878 it became the Western Steam Navigation Company which operated until 1896. There is no information available on the passenger James Gilligan This item which may come from the old Warrnambool Museum is of considerable interest as a rare memento of steam travel to and from the Western Ports in the 19th century. Warrnambool was an important port at that time and this item is part of our marine history. This is a receipt for a passenger's ticket to travel to Belfast ( Port Fairy) on the Screw Steamship "Otway" in 1875.
