Ethyl chloride was first used as a general anaesthetic in 1847, by Johann Ferdinand Heyfelder (1798-1869), a German surgeon. Once ethyl chloride became readily available, it was again taken up as a general anaesthetic in the late 1890s (USA). Ethyl chloride evaporates very quickly so that when it is sprayed onto the skin it produces very cold temperatures. “Refrigeration anesthesia”, or cryoanesthesia, refers to the anesthesia produced when the skin is significantly cooled.Due to its rapid onset, ethyl chloride was often used to induce general anaesthesia. It would be followed by a second anaesthetic, such as ether or nitrous oxide, which would be used for the remainder of the procedure. Powdered milk was sod in cans before plastic packaging was introduced. The Nestle Company manufactured the Sunshine powdered milk in Australia and was made from full cream pasteurised milk which had the water content removed from it this would then allow the tins of powdered milk to be transported without refrigeration. The powdered milk could then be made up by adding water at the recommended quantities as per directions on the labels.A white, and green paper covered rusty tin. In 1978 a new campus for Williamstown Grammar, named Westbourne, was established at Truganina to accommodate the new secondary school. The first year 12 class graduated in 1983 and to commemorate this historic event, the Year 12 art and signature book was begun. Since 1983, each Year 12 group has nominated a student to create an artwork, which in many cases represents a theme that was important to the Year 12 cohort at the time, to be signed by each student of Year 12. The practice quickly became to create the artwork on a separate sheet of paper and paste it across the fold of each consecutive double page spread. The book, opened at the entry of the graduating class, would then be displayed at the Year 12 Valedictory Dinner each year.This books commemorates each graduating year 12 class since the establishment of the secondary campus at Truganina. It is an example of beginning community building traditions for the new school.Red vinyl bound book with tan-coloured suede corners and spine. Developed in the Research and Development Department of VISY Board by Alex Ong and Richard Pratt, this manufactured version of 'making do' philosophy began with a humanitarian outlook. Less than 100 were made in the pilot program and these were distributed to the homeless through welfare agencies around Melbourne. They were designed to provide some protection from the weather and to be portable and disposable. Unfortunately, the project was short lived, as some safety issues were unable to be resolved: ie, someone inside the bag would not be able to escape should the bag be set alight. It was found that people sleeping on the streets preferred sheets of cardboard or paper to avoid this possibility. Lois Densham heard a story on the radio about these sleeping bags and contacted VISY to see if she could acquire one for the Running Stitch collection.
