Photograph - Tocumwal Troop trophy winners
No 1 Troop C Squadron 20th Light Horse Regiment drawn from the farming community of Tocumwal, personified the strength of citizen soldiering in rural Victorian and Southern NSW in the period following World War One and especially in the years immediately prior to the second World War. Building on the strength and enthusiasm of the Tocumwal Troop other Troops were raised at Finley, Berigan and Jerilderie. The Tocumwal Troop won the coveted Hutton Trophy in 1937 and 1938, defeating crack Troops from other States. The 20th Light Horse (Victorian Mounted Rifles) was raised in 1920 as part of the 3rd Cavalry Brigade, 2nd Cavalry Division, Citizen Military Forces, with Headquarters at Seymour and depots along the Goulburn Valley from Mansfield to Tocumwal in southern NSW. In December 1941, 20th Light Horse (Victorian Mounted Rifles) converted from horse to mechanised, initially as 20th Motor Regiment. In 1943 the Regiment was deployed to Merauke, Dutch New Guinea. Upon its return in April 1945, the Regiment was redesignated 20th Pioneer Battalion. This black and white photograph is taken in the Education Department at Western General Hospital. Sr, Nan Deakin is a Nurse Educator with RDNS and is giving a lecture about District Nursing to hospital student nurses before each nurse goes to RDNS Centres. This lecture prepares each nurse before she goes out for a week with an RDNS Sister to visit patients who are receiving nursing care in their home.During their training, Student nurses from several hospitals either attended the Royal District Nursing Service (RDNS), Education Department, or, a RDNS Nurse Educator travelled to the appropriate hospital’s Education Department to educate the Trainees on District nursing through the RDNS Community Nursing Program. Following the lectures Students went to a RDNS Centre and each student accompanied a Trained nurse (Sister) for a week observing and gaining knowledge of all facets of nursing care in the home. This gave them an insight into the home conditions and situations patients faced after discharge from hospital. During 1971 there were 584 Student nurses who received District field experience with RDNS.This black and white photograph shows the back view of three rows of hospital student nurses in their white uniforms and caps, sitting at small tables facing toward, on the left, Royal District Nursing Service (RDNS), Nurse Educator, Sister Nan Deakin, and their hospital Tutor Sister who is wearing her white uniform. Initially by the Melbourne Tramway & Omnibus Co (a private operator) then the "Tramway Board" from 1916 to 1919 until the Melbourne & Metropolitan Tramways Board took over. Demonstrates and yields information about the considerations made for Weekly Tickets during the late 1920's.Set of handmade or hand written sheets regarding weekly tickets in Ballarat - using ink and pencil .1 - handwritten double foolscap sheet - titled "Weekly Tickets Ballarat" and dated 2/6/28 - sets out an extensive table of section, length, existing fares, present weekly and proposed tickets - 12 trips and 24? trips. Sets out conditions, current sales and notes. .2 - set of two Foolscap ruled sheets - titled "Weekly Tickets" detailing where they would be sold (the Showroom), the method of sales and accounting practices and when it can be used, reflects back to 1921 practices. Demonstrates domestic items manufactured soon after the establishment of the tramway systems in Ballarat.Ash Tray - white glazed on front, unglazed rear with gold edge trim, light weight China in the shape of a "spade" with an image of the intersection of Sturt St and Lydiard St from the Post Office looking at the buildings on the south side of Sturt St including the Town Hall with two electric trams and the tram lines in the view. One of the trams is hauling a trailer. Possibly made mid to late 1900's. Destination roll - white lettering on black background for the St Kilda - Brighton tramway, operated by the Victorian Railways until November 1956. Letters are 125 high, with painted black linen (glossy black), leaving the letters white, but with edge to give a shadow effect - see images. Roll quite stiff when rolled out. Roll 790 wide, with a top section (no destinations) 225 long, the destination roll section, 995 long and a bottom 240 long. Destinations in order are: ST KILDA RLY; DICKENS ST; VAUTIER ST; ELWOOD DEPOT; MID BRIGHTON; BRIGHTON BCH. Rolled in direction with destinations on the outside of the roll. Set of 16 mixed SEC tickets found in Ballarat No. 18, behind the north side sandboxes No. 2 end 6/12/1997. Tickets have been used and have varying degrees of dirt. The image file shows the nature of the damage. Tickets have not been individually numbered with the Registration Number, but can be identified by their ticket number and denomination. All SEC penny or pre decimal tickets with one SEC decimal issue. All on white paper unless otherwise noted. Set of 8 mixed SEC tickets found in Ballarat No. 28, No. 2 end north side under old drop window in bulk head by Darren Hutchesson on 28/3/1999. Tickets have been used and have varying degrees of dirt. The image file shows the nature of the damage. Tickets have not been individually numbered with the Registration Number, but can be identified by their ticket number and denomination. Mostly SEC pre-decimal tickets with one SEC decimal issue ticket and one bus ticket. Twelve page booklet, titled "Ballarat and Bendigo, Victorian Tramway Preservation" written by D. Menzies and J.H. Price, reprinted from Modern Tramway. Front cover has BTPS tram 38 on original depot fan, green banner centrally with title, and Bendigo Birney No. 28. A circular white sticker with "1.00" written on is stuck on the right hand side, centrally. Saddle stapled print in black ink on 120gsm art paper.
