Book, A brief history of Warrnambool & District Baptist Church 1964 to 2014, 2014
The Warrnambool Baptist Church in Koroit Street celebrated 150 years of formal worship in 2014. The book is of some importance as it gives us a good picture of the Baptist Church in Warrnambool over the past 50 years. It will be useful for researchers and for others interested in the Church’s activities. The author is well-known in Warrnambool as a former pharmacist and a volunteer worker in historical and cultural spheres (Flagstaff Hill, Mahogany Ship Committee, Portuguese Festival etc)This is a paper back book of 52 pages. Tait collection: item 26 of 62 This is a 1905 document containing information on the Will and Probate of Elizabeth Bright, a widow from Ellerslie in Victoria. She died in April 1905 and left real estate to the value of £540 and personal estate to the value of £412. The main beneficiary was her daughter-in-law, Ann Gibson, the wife of William Gibson, a dairyman from Ellerslie. No other information has been found on Elizabeth Bright. The lawyer concerned with the document was Edward Backhouse of Terang. He came to Victoria with his family in 1871 and was educated at Wesley College and Melbourne University. He was the founder and Head Teacher of the Alma Road Grammar School in St. Kilda and later was the Head Teacher of the St. Kilda Grammar School. Book, The Girl Who Played the Game by May Wynne, Early 1930s
This book was given as a prize to Dorothy Donalson who was a pupil at the Warrnambool State School. No. 1743. This school was opened in 1876 in Jamieson Street, Warrnambool, following the 1872 Education Act bringing free, secular and compulsory education to Victoria. Several other Government- sponsored primary schools that existed in Warrnambool in the early 1870s closed when the school in Jamieson Street opened. The school still operates today. The name, ‘Dorothy Donalson’ may be a spelling mistake and may be meant to be Dorothy Donaldson who was living in Derby Street, Warrnambool at that time. Her father Cyril and his brother had a timber yard in Raglan Parade. This book is an excellent example of the type of book given as a prize to school girls in Victoria in the 1930s. The author, May Wynne was a popular and prolific writer of the time. If the book belonged to a member of the Donaldson family, then this is of interest as the Donaldson timber business was a prominent one in Warrnambool at the time. This is a hard cover book of 255 pages. The cover is grey with black lettering on the front and the spine and an image of two schoolgirls in black and grey on the front cover. The book also has a dust cover with a multi-coloured image of the same two schoolgirls on the front cover. The dust cover has been reinforced with white paper pasted on the inside of the cover. The name plate is blue-coloured and has an ornamental edging with the information handwritten in black ink. The book contains 18 chapters and has a full-page black and white illustration at the front of the book.‘S.S. Artefact, School Satchel, Circa 1900
Satchels such as these were commonly used by young boys to carry their lunch and school items between school and home. They were used commonly in the days when much of the requirements such as slates and paper were used as class sets. They proved to be serviceable and required only the most basic of maintenace as in stitching, to be kept in good order. Being adjustable they would also serve a student for a number of years. No information is available on Henry Alexander Cain of Surrey Hills.A common item with which many people would identify.Brown leather rectanular satchel with gusset on either side . It is fastened on the front with two metal buckles and has four adjustable leather back straps attached to the bag with metal studs. These are adjustable through holes in the leather straps. Likewise the front straps can be fastened in a number of different holes. The leather has an overall snake skin pattern.Solid leather is stamped in the leather on the front. henry Alexander Cain ******Rd Surrey Hillswarrnambool, school history, boy's school bag -

Document, Christ Church Sunday School Concert, Mid 20th century
Christ Church is the main Anglican Church in Warrnambool. The Anglican Church held services in Warrnambool from 1847 on and a Sunday School operated from that time. The building of Christ Church was commenced in the early 1850s with the tower and spire added in the 1880s. The program under study here was for the annual concert of the Anglican Sunday Schools in Warrnambool. The concert featured items from Christ Church Sunday School and two other local Sunday Schools from St. George’s, East Warrnambool (established 1906 and now closed) and St. Peter’s, South Warrnambool (established 1911 and closed in 1974). This item, though ragged, is of interest as an example of the type of entertainment featured at Sunday School concerts in Warrnambool during the 20th century. At that time Sunday Schools would have been important as the children of the adherents of most Protestant religions in the city would have attended a Sunday School which provided religious instruction and some social activities. The program contains the names of those participating in the concert and these are useful to researchers. This is a piece of paper folded in two to make four pages, three with typed material. The pages are now completely detached and are a little torn and crumpled. It is a program of a mid 20th century Warrnambool Christ Church Sunday School concert. It has probably been produced by church officials as it is not a professional printing job. Book, Archibald Constable & Co Ltd, Bachelor Betty, 1905
This book was written by Winifred James. She was born in Melbourne in 1876 and began writing in the early 1900s. ‘Bachelor Betty’ was published in England in 1905 and was a successful publication. The book is marked ‘Vickers’ and may have belonged to Daisy Vickers (1907-1987), later Mrs Ogier. She was a long-serving and very respected teacher and Senior Mistress at Warrnambool Technical School. This book is retained because the author was an early advocate for women’s rights and because it may have a close connection to Daisy Vickers, an important 20th century teacher in Warrnambool. This is a paper back of 127 pages. It has 46 chapters and several advertisements inside the covers. The front cover, partly detached from the binding, has an image of a woman near a chair in mauve, grey and buff tonings. 33.3 R.P.M. Record (Warrnambool Technical School), H.M.S. Pinafore, 1971
This record was made by a local business existing in the 1960s and early 70s, Warrnambool Recording Enterprises. This business used a local landmark, the Tower Hill State Park, as its logo and label. The recording is of the 1971 production of ‘H.M.S. Pinafore’ by the students of Warrnambool Technical College. This school was established in 1913 in Timor Street and in 1973, as Warrnambool Technical School, was relocated to Caramut Road and re-named Brauer college in 1990. The Timor Street site is now the South West TAFE College. This record is of interest as a memento both of the Warrnambool Technical College’s musical performance in 1971 and of the production of records such as this one by a local business, Warrnambool Recording Enterprises in the early 1970s. This is a 33.3 R.P.M. record with a part-image of a guitar and a yellow label in the centre with black printing and typing.
