Photograph, Schwerkolt Cottage 50th celebrations, 2014
Proceedings were opened in the Visitors' Centre by Barbara Rogalski whose father had catered for the Cottage opening in 1965. Rosalie Whalen (nee Schwerkolt) spoke about her early years in the area, after which the group walked to the cottage where a plaque was unveiled and a tree planted. Returning to the work room, an afternoon tea was enjoyed by all, with the pride of place being a large cake with an edible photograph of the cottage on top.21 coloured photographs taken on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the purchase of Schwerkolt Cottage by the former City of Nunawading in March 1964.celebrations, schwerkolt cottage 50th celebrations -

Photograph, Mary Jack (nee Schwerkolt), 1909
After her mother and brother died, Mary lived with her uncle, John Kruse. They realised that her mother Wilhelmina had wrongly given the cottage to Louise Schwerkolt, which was not in accordance with August Schwerkolt's will. In 1909, when Mary was 22, she and her uncle set sail on Seydlitz for Melbourne in order to gain title to her inheritance. They were successful in getting both the Mitcham and Northcolt titles transferred to her name.Coloured photograph at the 'Seydlitz' from Germany. Photograph, Schwerkolt Cottage, 1962
Photo sent to Mary Jack, Pittsburgh USA. Accompanying text sent by Charles - 'This is the side facing the creek. It is probably the side you asked me to take a photo of. Notice the bathroom behind the towel on the washing line. This was erected to give the tenant privacy. It cost over 100 pounds. The place was condemned a month or so later. You will notice there is nothing growing here. This part was always used for growing vegetables, there is not one there now. If I get him out the place will have to be demolished. We are not allowed to let it to another person to live in.Black and white photo of Schwerkolt Cottage. Recently built detached Bathroom , visible to left of photo.
