The University's mace was carried in procession for the first time during the Graduation ceremonies in May 1996. The mace was presented to the University by former Chief Commissioner of the Ballarat City Council, Vern Robson, at a ceremony on 02 February, following a national competition for its design, sponsored by the Council. (The Flag, Issue 2, July 1996) Nineteen artists responded to the competition which called for a design that would embody a distinctive Australian image reflecting the heritage of the city and in relationship with gold, an Aboriginal element and the history of the University. The winning entry, dominated by a poppet head, was submitted by Central Victorian artist/sculptor Trefor Prest, a sessional lecturer in sculpture at the University.(The Flag, Issue 2, July 1996) The Herald Sun of 03 February 1996 reported 'the new mace shows importance elements of Ballarat's heritage as well as the university's focus on the future. The artist emphasises the egalitarian nature of Australia as embodied in Ballarat's famous slice of history - the Eureka uprising. ... The mace has a poppet head at the top of the shaft - an unusual element for a mace - but it represents Ballarat's mining history and the University's evolution from the Ballarat School of Mines. An opening egg at the top stands for the nurturing of development and learning. The mace's straight shaft is depicted as the tree of knowledge and, incorporating a bark canoe scar, Ballarat's Aboriginal heritage. At the end of the shaft is a surveying device, which represents precision and accuracy ads embodied in the university's academic pursuits.' Bob Morrell of the University organised the national competition to design the mace and said 'It is in keeping with the university's logo, 'proudly flying the flag', which incorporates the Southern Cross.' This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. The Art Collection features over 1000 works and was listed as a 'Ballarat Treasure' in 2007. Trefor Prest lectured in Sculpture at the University of Ballarat from 1995-1996.The mace symbolises the office of the Chancellor. HMAS Orion (S 71) was an Oberon class submarine of the Royal Australian Navy (RAN). One of six submarines ordered by the RAN during the 1960s, Orion, named after the constellation in a break from ship-naming tradition, was built in Scotland and commissioned in 1977. Orion was decommissioned in 1996, marked for disposal in 2003, and broken up for scrap in 2006. The Mayoral Ball is long held tradition, usually held in the first few months of a new mayors election with proceeds going to a local charity. The 1972 Mayoral Charity Dinner Ball was held at the Bendigo City Town Hall with funds donated to St Luke's Toddlers' Home in White Hills. Key's to the City and Mayor's Key are medieval traditions meant to confer trust and honor; it grows from the medieval walled city whose gates were guarded during the day and locked at night. The key symbolizes the freedom of the recipient to enter and leave the city at will, as a trusted friend of city residents. Photo of wreath laying on Anzac Day in 1996 in Harefield in UK. The photo is of Mr Alf Young and a Bishop from Oxford. During World War 1 the Australian Auxiliary Hospital No.1 was stationed at Harefield Park in Harefield, UxBridge, Middlesex UK. 111 Australian soldiers and one nurse from the hospital are buried at St Mary's Church, Harefield. This became an Australian Military Cemetery with individual headstones and an obelisk and arch. The headstones which are of a scroll design unique amongst Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemeteries were chosen by the staff and patients at the hospital. The arch was erected by the CWGC. Anzac Day services are held there and the local school became involved with the headmaster, Mr Jefferies, bringing the school children to lay flowers on every grave and attend the service on Anzac Day. This started in 1921 and has continued until at least 2021. One school child who attended was Mr Alf Young, he made contact with Legacy in the 1990s and sent photos of the Anzac Day Services and the cemetery. Legacy responded by sending Australian flags for the school children and also Legatee John Cohen met with Mr Young when in London. Melbourne Legacy staff member Susie Howard also visited Mr Young and the cemetery in 1995. Mr Young provided historical photos and information of the area to Legacy. He was featured in the widows' newsletter The Answer many times and his death was announced in The Answer in April 1997, he was 85. Many of the photos he provided were labelled as coming from Mr R G Neil, Photographic historian from Harefield. This wedding photo is of local pioneer families, Cooper and Larkins. John Cooper Jnr. married Annie Emma Larkins. The exact date is unknown. This is not only important for the Cooper & Larkin families but for historical reference for the Tawonga area where these families lived. It shows that even though the Kiewa Valley was considered remote during this period the tradition of a big formal wedding was still held with fashionable weddings. This photo was included in a group of photos. This photo has historical significance as it depicts members of local pioneer families getting married. It also is representative of the style of wedding dresses of the period and the style of men's wedding attire. The photograph itself is also significant as is demonstrates the style and formality of wedding photos during this time. The picture frame is likewise the style of the period. Three pop festivals were staged in Sunbury. One in 1972 and a further ones in 1974 and 1975 . The 1972 festival was the most famous and followed on in the Woodstock tradition. The festivals were staged on a property on the banks of the Jacksons Creek, owned by the Duncan family. A crowd of partly clad people sitting or lying on the ground in a wide valley listening to a performance can be seen in the image. The area is litterred with cans, eskies, blankets, sleeping bags and tents. This hat has the brand name or model, ‘The Solent’ which is the name of the strait that separates the Isle of Wight from mainland England. Boater hats such as these were mostly worn for informal occasions and were usually associated with sporting events such as boating and sailing, particularly in Britain. Hats of this type were also part of the school uniform of some Australian schools, usually prominent private schools with a British tradition, in the first half of the 20th century and there may be some schools still using the style today. This boater is of interest as an example of the informal head gear worn by men in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It will be useful for display.This is a cream straw boater hat with a flat circular crown and round brim. The straw is stiffened and plaited. There is a black material band ending with a black bow around the base of the crown. The hat has brown leather internal lining with a cream cord insert for altering the inside size of the hat. A Letter of condolence sent to Lily (Elizabeth Ann Jones) for the death of her Mother, Mary Ann Jones, who died on 18 January 1903, from her school friend Jane Clark. Following Queen Victoria’s example, it became customary for families to go through elaborate rituals to commemorate their dead. This included wearing mourning clothes, having a lavish (and expensive) funeral, curtailing social behaviour for a set period of time, and erecting an ornate monument on the grave. . Relatives and friends were expected to give handwritten Condolence Cards and Letters, preferably by hand when visiting the bereaved. The different periods of mourning dictated by society were expected to reflect the natural period of grief. In recent years some traditions have given way to less strict practices, though many customs and traditions continue to be followed. Condolence Cards and Letters are still expected for relatives and close friends. These can be individually composed and handwritten or purchased from a Greeting Card Manufacturer. The letter shows Tucker Road as being in East Brighton. Due to the confusion caused by so many 'Brightons' in the area of Henry Dendy's Special Survey of 1841 this area was renamed Bentleigh after Sir Thomas Bent. The Right, Title, Privilege, Honour and Distinction of marching through the streets of a city on all ceremonial occasions with bayonets fixed, drums beating, bands playing and colours flying is one of the most interesting of the Military Traditions. The tradition of Freedom of Entry to a city stems from a custom observed by British Regiments in marching through the city of London. The fathers of the city of London claimed that they had the right to forbid bodies of Armed Forces from marching through the city precincts with bayonets fixed, colours flying and music playing, basing this claim on 'Ancient Privileges' which appear to have originated shortly after Charles Il became King in 1660. Military units were then only allowed to enter the city by invitation. The custom has been adopted by many Australian cities and shires. The privilege is usually only extended to Units which have a close association with the city and provides a means of honouring an Army Corps. The Freedom of the City of Wodonga has been conferred on different units based at Bandiana on several occasions. This Certificate commemorates the granting of Freedom of the City of Wodonga on the occasion of the 10th Anniversary of the Vietnam and Associated Veterans Club which was accompanied by a military parade on 11th August 2003. The tickets, known as "flimsies", have a value of 2 pence to 10 pence. Some tickets have been nipped, the remainder are unmarked. The tickets in Row 1 are not marked with complete identifiers, but a label attached notes that they could be printers' samples. In Row 3, an alphabetic identifier is used, followed by a six digit number. The tickets are printed on cream paper in a variety of colored inks. In Row 2, there is a small manila colored envelope with the printed words "THE ENGLISH SCOTTISH AND AUSTRALIAN BANK LIMITED" and "A Bank where service is a Tradition". Oral tradition suggests that this pig came from Papua/New Guinea and was probably in the old Warrnambool Museum which was situated in the Mechanics Institute Building and closed in the 1960s (site of Warrnambool Library today). Illustrations have been found of similar carved pigs originating from the Sepik River area (Tambanum Village) of Papua/New Guinea and of similar items collected early in the 20th century. It is known that the old Museum had a considerable collection of South Sea Islands material but those items appear to have been mainly collected from the Fiji area. If the possible provenance of this item (Papua/New Guinea and old Museum) can be proved then it is a significant item as an example of an indigenous carving which may be more than 60 years old. The pig is very important in Papua/New Guinea as a source of food and a barter/currency item.
