The Fashion & Design collection of the Kew Historical Society includes examples of women’s, men’s, children’s and infants’ clothing from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. Fur hats were a necessary accoutrement for fashionable women who wore furs. Typically, the fur hat might be purchased from the furrier to match the colour and often the pelt of the coat or stole, rather than from a milliner. Hats, like coats and stoles were often dyed to achieve uniformity of colour. Tastes in the colour of furs also changed over time, so hats, coats and stoles could be updated to match prevailing tastes. Until the 1960s in Australia, there were many furriers, who usually brought from Europe experience in identifying fur types. With the decline in the fur industry, these skills are noticeably scarcer in Australia today.The Kew Historical Society’s fashion and design collection is comprised of costumes, hats, shoes and personal accessories. Many of these items were purchased or handmade in Victoria; some locally in Kew. The extensive hat collection comprises items dating from the 1860s to the 1970s. Most of the hats in the collection were created by milliners for women. There are however a number of early and important men’s hats in the collection. Field notebook holders were not part of kit issue. This holder would have been purchased at a military store for the purpose of carrying personal documentation on the person. Major Damien Batty served in Afghanistan in 2011-2012 with the Bravo Commando Company Group, 2nd Commando Regiment in Uruzgan. The Commandos took part in 20 rotations with the Special Operations Task Group (SOTG) between 2007 and 2012. An embroidered cloth Legacy badge patch that was given to Junior Legatees to add to their tunics. Throughout the year Melbourne Legacy provided classes for Junior Legatees such as dancing, gymnastics, elocution and eurythmics. Boys classes also included basketball, judo, swimming and boxing. Boys classes were generally held in the suburbs and girls classes were held at Legacy House, usually Tuesdays and Fridays. Uniforms were provided free of charge. They were all brought from Germany by Auntie Hilda - made in her cousin's factory who supplied these for the German Army, (1st World War).A set of 1st World War German Military Uniform badges (10 star pins) and buttons (5) with a shank on the back made of rolled gold and a piece of ribbon made of pure gold thread. 3 buttons are smaller than the other two and all have engraving and military insignia which is difficult to read on the front and the back of each. One star is bigger than the other 9 and all have 5 points and lines on each point. They have a pin on the back. The 5 buttons have an insignia on the front with a key and other markings.
