It is presumed that the 'A.C.F.' on two of these badges stands for 'Australian Comforts Fund'. The Australian Comforts Fund was one of two wartime welfare groups recognized by the Australian Government. The other was the Australian Red Cross. The Australian Comforts Fund was established in 1916 to co-ordinate the welfare efforts to assist Australian servicemen and women in World War One. It was dissolved in 1920 and re-established in 1939. It was staffed largely by women volunteers and supplied such articles as singlets, socks, pyjamas, toiletries, writing materials, tobacco and Christmas hampers to servicemen and women. It also offered recreational facilities and rest rooms etc in Australia for service personnel. It was closed in 1946. These badges were issued, two in 1941, as part of fund-raising for the Australian Comforts Fund.These badges are interesting mementos of the welfare work undertaken in World War Two by the Australian Comforts Fund. During WW2 there were volunteers all over Australia observing air activity every night. This photo was taken from the S.E.C.V. hut dedicated to this activity and was manned by men and women throughout the war. The State Electricity Commission of Victoria were based at Bogong when constructing the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme. The State Electricity Commission of Victoria dedicated a hut at Bogong township during World War 2 for the purpose of volunteers manning the hut to observe air craft. This was during the construction of the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme. Her work with this body drew her attention to the plight of war widows. After Major-General George Alan Vasey died in an aircraft accident on 5 March 1945 she became a widow herself. At the end of the war Mrs Vasey founded the War Widows Guild. This reproduction on display board may have been for an exhibition of Guild memorabilia at some time. The Victorian War Widows Guild closed in 2021. Some items, including this board, were donated to the Legacy archive for preservation. It was possible for a widow to be members of both Legacy and the War Widows Guild. Belonged to Clarence (Clarrie) Edward Nicholls who was a communications person on the Sunderland Flying Boats. He was in the Battle of Britain. He was seconded to the RAF and flew out of Plymouth. He was shot down a number of times. He was in the peace keeping corps in Japan and then Korea, and then went into the full time Korea. At one time Clarrie and his two brothers were in New Guinea at the same time. They knew they were all there together but they could not find each other, and officials would not tell them where they were. He flew the last Sunderland back to Lake Boga. He wanted to buzz his parents in Wodonga so he knew he was on the way, but the authorities wouldn't let him. Clarrie Nicholls was a flag bearer for the Melbourne Olympics.Red hard covered book of 200 pages. This item has been brought back to Australia by a returning soldier from World War One (1914-1918). At a time when France was completely disrupted by the ravages of war many French women, especially those in rural areas, earned a living by making souvenir pieces of embroidery to sell to soldiers in the Allied forces. These embroidered pieces took the form of postcards, doyleys, centerpieces, handkerchiefs etc. The items are noted for the handcraft skills shown by the makers and are prized by collectors today. This item, although fragile, is of considerable interest, firstly as an attractive embroidered piece and secondly, because of its association with World War One as an example of the souvenirs brought back from France to Australia by returning soldiers. This is an oblong-shaped handkerchief or doyley. It has a pink or mauve silk square in the middle with a coloured motif embroidered in one corner. This s a shield with representations of several European flags and embroidered wording underneath. The silk square is edged in a wave pattern in pink. The square has a white lace border. Background context for the establishment of the Eltham War Memorial as a living memorial, championed by the women of the community with the establishment of the Eltham War Memorial Trust and how the memorial was funded by public donations and eventually handed over to Council. The essay came about in 2018 following community protest at Council's plans to sell the land. The WWI Death Plaque (Dead Man's Penny) was issued to the next of kin of servicemen/women who had fallen in the Great War between 1914 and 1918. John Mercer Walker entered ballarat College in 1902 and was Dux of the school in 1904. He enlisted as a Private in the 3rd Light Horse Field Ambulance and served on Gallipoli. He transferred to 21st Squadron AFC in November 1917 and served in Palestine. He was killed a 22 August 1918 and buried at the Ramleh War Cemetery. Of the 305 Ballarat College old collegians who enlisted in WW1 65 gave their lives for their country. This 'death penny' is representative of the incredible sacrifice given by this huge percentage of the school's community. The Australian Red Cross Society (ARCS) was formed just after the outbreak of the First World War in August 1914, initially as a branch of the British Red Cross Society. Its first president was Lady Helen Munro Ferguson, wife of the then governor-general. The Garden of the Grieving Mother is an acknowledgement of the trauma, grief and anxiety felt by the families of Australian servicemen and women. Of the 3,801 WWI service men and women commemorated in the Ballarat Avenue of Honour, 1 in 5 made the ultimate sacrifice, giving their lives. At the centre of the memorial space is a bronze sculpture of a mother clutching a photograph of her son by sculptor Peter Corlett who has created many war memorial public artworks. This Bendigo Historical Society collection of glass negatives includes some slides of women working in the munitions factory. Seven slides were included in an album that was prepared for Dr Edith Summerskill who visited Australia in 1944 as part of an Empire Parliamentary Delegation. The album included photographs of Australian women working at the factory during WW2. In the 2000s Legacy released a range of Legacy Bears to expand the merchandise available for sale during Legacy Week and at other fundraising opportunities during the year. Over 80,000 women served working on farms, in sawmills, and in forestry. They became know as Land Girls and Lumber Jills.
