The Ballarat Trades Hall building is located at 24 Camp Street, Ballarat. The foundation stone was laid in October 1887. (Architects were Messrs James and Piper and builders were Messrs Lietch and Outtrim.) Over several decades, the façade of the building has fallen into disrepair and was posing a safety risk. Thanks to Victorian heritage grants and ongoing public donations, refurbishment of the façade is currently underway by Troon Pty Ltd. The photos in this entry show the deterioration of the building and the progress in restoring it to its former state. This King George III 1797 penny, colloquially described as a ‘Cartwheel’ because of its large size and thick rim, was manufactured in Great Britain from 1797-99. The penny and the twopence were the first coins shipped to New South Wales by the British Government. In 1800, Governor King issued a proclamation that forbade their export. This coin is one of the 132,000 coins sent to Australia in 1800. It is not uncommon to find cartwheel pennies used as containers. They were reputedly used to conceal a more valuable coin or for smuggling. The penny was purchased by the Society as part of a small collection of Henty memorabilia and portraits from the owner of Moorabool Antiques, Geelong in 2021, which had in turn acquired the item from the estate of Dennis Alston of Alston's Antiques in Hamilton, Victoria.This cartwheel penny, used to contain a lock of hair of Thomas Henty (1775-1838), is of statewide significance to Tasmania, where he settled and died, and to Victoria, where his children and their descendants were notable pioneers, squatters and subsequently landowners in the Western District. The item is also of national significance for its strong connection to the Henty family, notable British settlers of southeastern and southwestern Australia in the 1830s. The connection to Kew (Vic.) is that members of the Henty family owned important mansions in Kew in the 19th century. Thomas Henty was the father of Stephen George Henty of 'Findon', and Francis Henty of 'Merino Downs' in the Western District and 'Field Place', Kew. Numerous members of the Henty family are buried in the Boroondara General Cemetery.Object of personal memorabilia. James Dearing was the head gardener for Benjamin Nathan, who owned Rippon Lea between 1909-1935. Dearing is believed to have worked for the Nathan Family at their previous home in High St., Armadale. He is understood to have left the employment of the Nathan's in about 1914-1915.Decorative prize certificate awarded to Mr James Dearing, head gardener to Benjamin Nathan, by the Royal Horticultural Society of Victoria on the 11th February 1909, for "1 new or rare Plant". Certificate is made of white paper mounted on to cardboard. Decoration and text are very similar to RL 0448- the certificate is a cream coloured cardboard with printed text and decoration in green ink. The decorations consist of: a shield with a lion and a horse on either side, at the top of the certificate; a sheild with a kangaroo and an emu on either side, with advance Australia below, on the bottom of the certificate. On either side of this are two circles, the right circle consists of flowers, the left circle consists of fruit. This book was given in 1847 to E. Callender by an unknown person (‘C.E –‘). There is a reference in the Warrnambool Examiner newspaper to an Adam Callander, a Port Fairy baker whose wife Alice committed suicide in 1870 and, more importantly, a reference to a Miss Callender arriving as a ship passenger to Warrnambool in July 1854. There is a record of Eliza Callender marrying Peter McFarlane in 1858. The book may have been a New Years’ Day present or a birthday present or a presentation to someone leaving England to migrate to Australia. This book is kept because of its inscription and its early date (1847 – some months before Warrnambool was founded). Further research may reveal the extent of the book’s significance. This is hard cover book of 320 pages. The cover is dark brown with embossed scrolls on the front cover and gold lettering on the spine. The book has eight chapters, including a biography of the author, Matthew Henry, and two black and white sketches. On the first page is the stamp of the Warrnambool and District Historical Society. The inscription is handwritten in black ink. The cover is slightly stained.‘To E. This notice relates to the prohibition of lighting fires,drying clothes or bringing inflamable material near any of the bridges in the shire. Offenders will be prosecuted. With a date of 1882 and the fact that bridges were mostly made of wood, it would have been of concern that the destruction of bridges was not only of great inconvenience but also of considerable expense. But the reality of bridges providing shelter and warmth in the colder months and the ensuring fires and burnt bridges has more than likely precipitated this notice. J W Crawley was shire engineer from 1876 until 1895 and for 10 of those years he trained his son J W Crawley who succeeded his father and served in the position for 40 years.He in turn was succeeded by his son Rolf Crawley in 1935. In 1963 the bridge over the Hopkins Falls at Wangoom was named the Crawley bridge in honour of service to the Shire of Warrnambool by members of the Crawley family. The Shire of Warrnambool was proclaimed in 1863 and covered an area of over 600 square miles. Much of it was incorporated into the Moyne Shire in the 1990's with some being included into the boundaries of City of Warrnambool. This banner is an interesting piece of history. It shows the issues confronting early settlers such as shelter and the chores of daily life but also the importance placed on infrastructure which was slowly taking place around the district. It was in the era of drainage and roadworks and hence bridges were an important part of that infrastructure. The name J W Crawley is one of importance in the Warrnambool district for his service over many years. Rectangular piece of cloth printed in black ink.
