Each year Melbourne Legacy would have an Annual Dinner for the installation of the incoming President (Changeover dinner). It is one of the most important events of the year. Up until 2005 each President served for one year. Whilst the rules of the Club nominate one year terms, since 2005 Presidents have been renominated to serve for a second year. A valuable insight into the genesis of Melbourne Legacy, as well as the life and work of the founder of Melbourne Legacy, Lieut Gen Sir Stanley George Savige KBE, CB, DSO, MC, ED (1890 - 1954). The notation H5 in red pen shows that it was part of the archive project that was trying to capture the history of Legacy (late 1960s/early 1970s by Frank Doolan and Brian Armstrong- see item at 00456). The Answer is a newsletter in magazine format that is sent to the widows that are helped by Melbourne Legacy. For the widows who are sight impaired a copy of the newsletter is audio described onto CD by Vision Australia and posted to them. It contains information about meetings and activities. This edition contained articles on the founder of Legacy Stan Savige, the ESO collaboration at Legacy House, ANVAM Disability Program Day, and widows having milestone birthdays. A Vale notice that was published in the Bulletin in 1975 on the death of Legatee Oswald Gawler. He joined Legacy in Adelaide in 1929 and was president of Melbourne Legacy in 1943. He served on the Co-ordinating Council for many years. In World War One he had served on Gallipoli and in France and Belgium. In 1917 he was severely gassed which impacted his health and eyesight in later years His professional career was as an actuary and his forecasts helped make many policy decisions in Legacy. The photos were mounted in an album of events that happened for Junior Legatees in 2001, including a trip to the Aquarium, a trip to Luna Park, horse riding and fishing and a Melbourne Legacy Leadership Group Christmas party. Part of a Bulletin newsletter that includes a poem by L.F.J. (Legatee Leigh Johns) titled Reflections. The poem honours the service to Legacy by Wendy Faulkner who came to Legacy on 13 September 1965 after working on the stage. The Melbourne Legacy 1979 - 56th Annual Report with presidents report and photos of events through the year. The President was Legatee Bill Mehan. It mentions there were more than 900 members of Melbourne Legacy. The executive officer Ivan Layton had been inducted into Melbourne Legacy before he went on sick leave. Unfortunately he passed away leaving a contribution of almost 30 years service. The widows club rooms were renovated and reopened with 350 widows in attendance. Images from a Legacy Bowls tournament, there are people in watching the games and also Sir Dallas Brooks speaking at the end. Names of the legatees are not known. The trophy awarded to the winner was named after Sir Dallas Brooks who was a patron of Melbourne Legacy when he was Governor of Victoria (1949-1963). Melbourne Legacy held regular bowls tournaments for Legatees. Some events were as a fundraiser for Legacy and well as a social event for legatees. The date is estimated to be the 1960s as it was with other slides from that period. The slides have been photographed to make digital images and moved to archive quality sleeves. A photo of Legatees Colin Bannister and Ray Ward with other legatees and guests. The event is not known but believed to be during Colin Bannister's year as president in 1985. During that time Ray Ward was President of the Perth Legacy. (Ray would later move to Melbourne and served term as President of Melbourne Legacy in 1996.) So it is possibly an annual Legacy Conference where legatees from all parts of Australia come together. A photo of widows at trading tables in the Clubrooms at Legacy House. It is one of the annual fetes usually held in November. Items for sale included home made food items like relish and jams, and craft items. Legacy House held craft lessons throughout the year and often the items made were sold at the fetes or at a stall outside Legacy House during Legacy Week for fundraising. The lady second from left is Vera Lang who was on the Widows committee for many years. It is likely to be 1988 due to the photographers reference number meaning 17 November 1988 (ref no. 881117). An article from an album of press clippings the relate to Melbourne Legacy in 1977. The photos and text show junior legatees were treated to a day on the water from the yachtsmen of Westernport, Somers and Merricks Yacht clubs. They queued for rides in Mirrors and Flying Dutchmen. One photo shows Junior Legatee Wayne Cowards on the trapeze of a Flying Dutchman. The boys were attending a legacy camp at Somers and the girls were at the Legacy Camp at Kew. The items were cut from the newspaper and pasted into a scrapbook with brown pages. For many years Legacy kept scrapbooks of press clippings that related to their work and publicity. A cutting from from a Melbourne Legacy President's report showing a photo of Legatee Don Simonson (President of Melbourne Legacy in 1970). It was collected to be a record of a photo of past presidents. Legatee Simonson saw active service as a commissioned officer in the South-West Pacific area and was awarded the Military Cross. He was part of the Owen Stanley Campaign and also served in Bougainville and New Britain. He was inducted into Legacy in 1953. His father was also a Legatee, Paul W Simonson was inducted into Legacy in 1925. The article was part of an album of past presidents from 1965 to 1989. The folder included biographical details and obituaries, eulogies and death notices of prominent Legatees. Black and white photo of a group of girls in elaborate costumes on the stage of the Melbourne Town Hall for an Annual Demonstration. It shows girls dressed as Russian cossacks and Russian peasants. The name of the routine isn't known. The year is not known but it is in the 1940s or 1950s as the album was a collection of press photos taken during dress rehearsals from that time. Throughout the year Melbourne Legacy provided classes for Junior Legatees such as dancing, gymnastics and Eurythmics. The Demonstration was an annual event to showcase their skills. Melbourne Legacy conducted Annual Demonstrations / Parades from 1928 through to 1979, usually held at Melbourne Town Hall. Three documents that capture the history of the Central Boys PT classes and where they were held, that appears to have been collated for the history of Legacy. It was in a folder of documents about the history of Legacy which appears to have been mostly compiled by Legatee Cyril Smith as he has many hand written notes on miscellaneous pieces of paper (some are envelopes addressed to him). The notes were typed up into a summary of the History of Legacy. Also documents relating to the first time Legacy approached the public for donations in September 1956, including newspaper articles that were reprinted, a schedule of information that was approved to be released to the press, and a list of potential donors that was circulated to Legatees in the hope they could contact the ones they knew personally or professionally. The documents from this folder have been added in seperate records (see 01262 to 01281). The folder was part of an attempt to capture history of Legacy, generally from the 1950s.The documents provide an insight into the working of Legacy, especially in the 1950s. A photo of senior girls in a scene from an annual demonstration. The girls were dressed as native American girls, some are in a kayak and others stand near totem poles. One of these two photos was used in the July 1954 newsletter to highlight the work of the girls classes. Throughout the year Melbourne Legacy provided classes for Junior Legatees such as dancing, gymnastics and Eurythmics. The Demonstration was an annual event to showcase their skills. Legatee Rogers collected information about Stan Savige after attending an unveiling of a statue of Savige and this print out was the Memorial Oration given t a Legacy Conference in 1954. Other copies are in the archive. The speech by Legatee Brian Armstrong is an account of Savige's life, his war service and his role in Legacy. Legatee Armstrong was a good friend of Savige. The moving address described General Savige's life and service career, and how he formed Legacy in 1923 at the suggestion of his former Commander, Major General Sir John Gellibrand. He said at the time of his death the late General had been a member of Legacy for 30 years, and had been chosen to represent Legacy at the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth. Following the Second World War he held many important posts, one of the most notable being Co-ordinator of Demobilisation. Legatee Armstrong told the conference that if a memorial to the founder of Legacy was required, they only had to look around themselves. Three widows standing in the forecourt of the Shrine of Remembrance and a photo of the elderly lady on her own. Her name is Mrs Winifred Fotheringham who helped launch the 1990 Legacy week as she was the oldest Legacy widow and had reached 101 years of age. Two newspapers used the photos on 4 September 1990. The Age used the three ladies with a caption. The Sun featured Winifred in a large photo on page 3. The article mentions her husband Archie, was shot four times in World War 1 but managed to live to the age of 83. Her son lost his life in World War 2 at the age of 23 while flying a mission over Germany and he was shot down. Legacy helped her after her husband died and she would be alone if it wasn't for Legacy. It mentions that Legacy hoped to raise $1.6 million to help the 23,000 ageing widows in their care. The photo of the three widows was featured in the 1990 Presidents report published with the Annual report. The caption says: 'Three generations of Legacy widows, WWII Mrs Dorothy Latta, 102 year old Mrs Winifred Fotheringham and Vietnam widow Mrs Barbara Leach.' Mrs Fotheringham is also seen at Anzac Commemoration service for students in April 1990 (item 00845) in the same outfit but with her badge on the other lapel. She was a former Miss Victoria and was known for her physical education skills and for introducing grace and culture to Melbourne. In 1932 she joined Melbourne Legacy and in 1934 became the chief instructor of girls' physical education until she retired aged 65. In the post World War II baby boom the Legacy evening classes were attended by about 400 girls. She helped organise Legacy Widows and Legatee wives to sew the costumes for performances. Among her proudest moments was a display by 1000 Junior Legatees at the MCG during the 1954 visit of Queen Elizabeth II. As well her work for Legacy she ran physical education, ballroom dancing and debutante preparation classes in Windsor, Elsternwick, Gardenvale and Geelong. She also held a position on the Board of Studies and as director of physical education in Catholic Schools. Recognition of her work included being awarded an MBE in 1971. And in 1997 she received Legacy's highest award, the title of Guest of Honour, for her years of service. See also Cat.No. 01300. A photo of Mrs Billie Sims receiving a certificate. The blue paper label says: "Legacy Helping to keep the Aussie Flag Flying" President of the Australian National Flag Association of Victoria, Mr Ross Watson, O.A.M. (right) together with the Secretary of the Association, Mr Henry Farrell, thanked the ladies of Melbourne Legacy for their contribution to help keep the Aussie Flag Flying. Through the President of Melbourne Legacy Widows' Club, Mrs Billie Simms, Ross Watson presented a framed certificate to mark the splendid work of Melbourne Legacy Widows in attaching miniature Australian flags to thousands of sprigs of rosemary prepared for Anzac Day marchers and for the 2,000 plus school children who attend Legacy's annual Anzac Commemoration Ceremony at the Shrine of Remembrance." Similar to another certificate from the Australian National Flag Association given to the Melbourne Legacy Club in June 1984. It was with a group of photos from 1988 to 1990 in a folio with paper labels (see items 01042 to 01049). The explanation of the source of the rosemary was in the same folio but the described photo is missing. For many years Legacy had a "Back to Caulfield Race Day" for Legatees, widows and their families. 1995 was the 50th anniversary of the end of World War 2 and the race day was part of the "Australia Remembers" commemorations. Also a Legacy 'Lone Pine' was planted. The article in the Answer says: "Over 800 members of the Legacy family (past and present) reunite at the "Australia Remembers" Back to Caulfield Commemorative Race Day held on August 12th. It was a special day which incorporated a wide range of activities, including a display of military vehicles, a flyover, a parachute jump by the Red Berets, military bands, and displays of memorabilia when the racecourse was used as an army camp. An official ceremony also included the presentation of a Legacy 'Lone Pine' (a descendant of the Gallipoli 'Lone Pine') by the President of the Melbourne Legacy, Legatee David Millie, which was very warmly received by the Chairman of the V.A.T.C., Mr Peter Lawrence. " Official guest was the Premier of Victoria Jeff Kennett who is seen being greeted as he arrives. And photos of the planting of the 'Lone Pine'. See also photos at 01003 and 01092 and 01093. Legacy is helping to keep the memory of the Gallipoli "Lone Pine" alive - its spirit living on today. Miss Enez Domec-Carre was the teacher of the girls classes at Legacy. This article was an obituary published in 1998 when she died of a stroke aged 90. She was a former Miss Victoria and was known for her physical education skills and for introducing grace and culture to Melbourne. In 1932 she joined Melbourne Legacy and became the chief instructor of girls' physical education until she retired aged 65. In the post World War II baby boom the Legacy evening classes were attended by about 400 girls. She helped organise Legacy Widows and Legatee wives to sew the costumes for performances. Among her proudest moments was a display by 1000 Junior Legatees at the MCG during the 1954 visit of Queen Elizabeth II. As well her work for Legacy she ran physical education, ballroom dancing and debutante preparation classes in Windsor, Elsternwick, Gardenvale and Geelong. She also held a position on the Board of Studies and as director of physical education in Catholic Schools. Recognition of her work included being awarded an MBE in 1971.
