Port of Portland Authority Archives. From the Port of Portland website: Just 6km south of Portland, the Cape Grant Quarry is located on the eastern cliff of Cape Sir William Grant. This cape represents the core of a volcanic complex between two collapse calderas which underlie Nelson and Grant Bays to the west and east respectively. The Cape Grant quarry supplied an inexhaustible quantity of bluestone for the building of the new Portland harbour. The first stone was tipped at the root of the main breakwater on 17 November 1952. A small band of interested citizens were there to see the historic event. In the building, the breakwater was consolidated by the heavy traffic of Euclid’s and bulldozers and was further solidified by several storms that swept over it. Nowadays, blasting at the quarry is heavily regulated and carried out under the instructions of a qualified “powder monkey.” The days of seeing large explosions, along with the deep long loud BOOM are long gone with techniques of controlled blasting now improving overall environmental and safety standards.Front: Back- Purple PHT Stampport of portland archives, cape grant quarry, harbour development, construction -

Book, Colorgravure Publications [for] The Herald & the Sun news-pictorial, Queen Elizabeth's coronation book, 1953?
"This book is right royally produced to be a treasured exhibit in the library of every home. Seven separate distinct printing operations have gone to make the beautiful, vivid coloring which distinguishes it as an object of fine and lasting craftsmanship. No pains have been spared to produce a fitting volume to mark the beginning of the Age of Queen Elizabeth the Second, and the publishers proudly present it as a book which their readers will rejoice to own."--Front flap.[48] pages : colour illustrations, plans ;non-fiction"This book is right royally produced to be a treasured exhibit in the library of every home. Photograph. Carwardine collection, photograph of poppet head and mullock heap. On back reads 10.2.1956, in Sun news, Thursday 9.4.1953, page 12. Central Deborah mine, one of Bendigo's two remaining active mines. It's 102 years since gold was first discovered at Golden Square, but today only two Deborah mines are working where once 3000 mines hummed. The Bendigo field had yielded 22,000,000 ounces valued at 110,000.000 pounds and three times more on today's value but last years output was only 10,000 ounces and the year before 13000 ounces. Pamphlet - Frank A. Hill and Co. 100 years, 1953
L. McPherson Sternberg and Co. was a large public company set up in Bendigo in the year 1853 especially to cater for the New South Wales consignments of cattle and horses which came regularly to Bendigo in those days to feed the thousands of hungry miners who had congregated from the four comcri:; of the earth in search of gold. The cattle were sold in the Municipal Cattle Yards ,and the horses in the Bazaar at Charing Cross. The founders of the business must have had tremendous faith in the future of Bendigo to have built such a large and solid structure as the Bazaar, including ample space for the administrative offices which, though reconstructed, are still basically as they were in the far-off fifties. When L. McPherson Sternberg & Co. retired from business in or about the year 1892, the business was acquired by Mr. Frank A. Hill. Frank A. Hill and Co. - a 14 page pamphlet outlining the history of the company and its 100 year development. Black and white, contains texts and photos.history, bendigo, frank a hill and co -
