African thumb piano, mid to late 1800s
This item was donated to the museum by Joseph Dallimore. Dallimore was brought up at Lake Gillear, and as a young man he left Australia to travel overseas both to help his parent's business in the wool trade and for pleasure. He wrote many letters to his parents keeping them updated with the prices he received from selling wool and on his travels. Later in life Dallimore enlisted in the Australian Army and went on to have a distinguished career during the Boer War. He would have collected this piano whilst on service in South Africa.South African thumb piano from the Zulu culture. It is a wooden panel board with 15 iron finger keys in it. They are stuck onto the wood at one end with some sort of glue and also held in place by an iron rod passing over the top of them. At the bottom of the board is a metal panel and attached to that is a small circular cymbal. There is a string tying the metal panel to the wooden board. There are no original markings on this although the original museum label is still stuck to the bottom which says, ' Native piano ( Mashona)' on it in script.south africa, joseph dallimore. war, boer war, zulu, finger piano, music -

Letter - Document, letter, 5 /3/1943
In furnishing Holmbush, Legacy needed to be granted a wartime permit to purchase a refrigerator. On getting the permit the firm of New System Telephones Pty Ltd inspected the property and revised the recommended model. Of note is that the shelves were to be made of wood as wire was not obtainable due to the war. The cabinet was custom made in wood. Legacy was offered a significant reduction in cost as New System Telephones Pty Ltd ElecctrICE offers a 12 1/2 c.ft.refrigerator delivered and installed for not more than sixty pounds, where the list price would normally be £137. See also 00496.Despite it being war time, Legacy was evidently held in sufficient regard to be sold items which may have been in short supply at a very reduced price. The letter head itself is of interest as an example of the current telephone numbers and a designated telegram address.Letter outlining the provision of a refrigerator for the Legacy hostel. Plan, Burrumbeep, 1884, 16/10/1884
Auctions of Crown land were introduced in the Colony of Victoria from 1851 to encourage settlers to occupy and work the land. Many squatters purchased land at auction at the upset (minimum) price of £1 per acre. In some areas where demand was high, such as the goldfields, the price realised at auction was much more. Land was put up for sale in the study area on the Burrumbeep run in May 1855, on the Lexington run in 1857, and on the Gorrinn run in 1858. (http://www.ararat.vic.gov.au/library/document/thermatics.pdf, accessed 27 January 2015) For 70 years or more, Yalla-y-Poora, Burrumbeep, Edgarley, Mount William and Narrapumelap ranked in the leading wool producers in Victoria. 1 Stud owners at Yalla-y-Poora, Eurambeen, Burrumbeep and Challicum crossed merino sheep with sheep descended from John Macarthur's Camden Park in New South Wales. (http://www.ararat.vic.gov.au/library/document/thermatics.pdf, accessed 27 January 2015) In what was to become the Ararat Mining Division, gold was discovered in May 1854 on the Burrumbeep run at a place that became known as Pinky Point on the Mount William goldfield. By 21 June 1854, between 600 and 1,000 people had arrived. (http://www.ararat.vic.gov.au/library/document/thermatics.pdf, accessed 27 January 2015)\ Town allotment plan for Burrumbeep. National Wool Museum
Photograph
Photo depicts the interior of the Strachan, Murray & Shannon Limited wool store in Geelong after a record price was reached for the wool shown. This occurred on 24 November, 1920. This photograph was owned by the donor's father, Mr Cyril Cameron. Mr Cyril Cameron came from the family property 'Burnside' near Glenthompson in the Western District. He joined Strachan & Co. as an office boy in Aug. 1914 and then joined the 8th Battalion, 1st AIF in January 1915. He returned to Australia in early 1920 and started work at Strachan's again. He did the wool classing course (one year, evening?) at the Gordon in 1920-21. He became Head Wool Valuer at Strachan's in 1938 and retired in 1970. His office at Strachan's was on the top floor, directly overlooking what is now the entrance to the National Wool Museum (formerly Dennys Lascelles woolstore). He died in 1983. This photo was originally framed together with another similar photo (3122) and a document (3123) detailing the wool sale and prices under the title "Record Sale 24 November 1920". The two photos focus on lot 372, one looking to the north and the other to the west. These three items may have been a requirement of Mr Cameron's wool classing course.Interior of Strachan, Murray & Shannon Ltd, Geelong in Nov. 1920....ORLAME / ... 7 1/2Dstrachan, murray and shannon ltd, cameron, mr cyril -

Document, Thomas Bing Nurseryman, 1870s
These catalogues come from the firm of Thomas Lang and Company of 52 Elizabeth Street, Melbourne and Bridge Street, Ballarat. They list the seeds and plants for sale in the early 1870s. This company sold seeds and plants to all parts of Australia and to India, China, Hong Kong, Mauritius, Ceylon and Fiji. These catalogues have no known local provenance but have considerable antiquarian value and are of interest as they tell us what plants and seeds were sold in Australia in the 1870s.These are three booklets - catalogues of plants and seeds for Thomas Lang & Co, Nurserymen and Seedsmen, of Ballarat and Melbourne. The booklets are printed in black on a white background and are bound or stitched with fine string. They are a little foxed and dog-eared. Catalogue One is dated 1870 and is numbered No. 27.
