Legal record - Two documents regarding purchase and sale of land, George Barber, Port Fairy solicitor, early 1850s
Thes two documents deal with the purchase and sale of land near Warrnambool by Thomas Simpson. The first document, called a Grant by Purchase, is dated 1852 and shows that Thomas Simpson purchased from the Crown, Allotment 146 (22 acres two roods) adjoining the property of Wollaston on the Merri River and the Mortlake Road, north of Warrnambool. The cost was 90 pounds. The second document is dated 1853 and shows that Thomas Simpson sold this Merri River allotment of 22 acres to Eliza Bromfield, in conjunction with her husband, John Davenport Bromfield, for the sum of 110 pounds. The property of Wollaston was owned by the Manifold family and in the 1850s was leased to William Simpson, the brother of Thomas who had an adjoining property called Wooramoota. John Davenport Bromfield was a Colac farmer who played a prominent part in the early history of that town. His brother James Astley Bromfield, an early chemist in Warrnambool is important in Warrnambool's history. These two items are of considerable significance because they are amongst the earliest legal documents we have connected to Warrnambool's history and because they concern three early pioneers of the district. They also have a connection to Wollaston, an important early property in the Warrnambool district..1 A piece of light parchment paper, stained with age and folded in three places. It contains printed and handwritten material, a copy of a signature and a white seal. .2 A piece of parchment paper folded in half and then folded again in two places. It contains ruled red lines, handwritten material in black ink and the remains of a red seal. Tools, George Panton & Sons, Jeweller Lathe, Early 20th century
This jewellery lathe (minus its rubber belt) came from the Warrnambool jewellery store of Michael Salamy and his son, Edward. The business was in two locations - in Timor Street, opposite the old Post Office, and at 179 Liebig Street. Michael Salamy erected two new buildings at 179 and 181 Liebig Street and the Salamy business was then headed by the son, Edward who was born in 1903 and died in 1977. The jewellery store was closed when Edward retired and Clancey Brothers men's store took over the building at 179 Liebig Street in 1966. Bill Clancey found the jewellery lathe in this building and donated it to the Historical Society. This lathe is of considerable interest as it comes from the prominent 20th century Warrnambool jewellery business of M.Salamy and Son. It is also an interesting memento of a 20th century industrial tool. This is a metal tool with several wheels connected with wing nuts. The large wheel has a wooden handle. A rubber belt connecting two of the wheels is missing. '0865 Panton Maker Glasgow'michael salamy and son, jewelers, warrnambool -
Port of Echuca
Functional object - Paddlesteamer, P.S. Adelaide, 1866
Built in 1866 in Echuca, the PS Adelaide is the oldest wooden hulled paddle steamer still operating as a passenger vessel in the world. Engines made in Melbourne by Fulton and Shaw. JG Grassie was the original owner who was looking for a wool carrying boat as a commercial venture with the arrival of the rail at the Port of Echuca making the future look bright. Seutonius and Charles Officer of Murray Downs Station joined Grassie in financing the venture and they used the boat for 6 years before David Blair and partners (Echuca sawmillers) bought the Adelaide in July of 1872 and she began her long working life as a logging boat providing a shuttle service between the forests around Barmah and the mill, usually towing up to 3 or 4 barges. The paddle boxes were rebuilt from round to a square configuration in approximately 1924 by Charles Felshaw, local Echuca shipwright. The Adelaide had unusual strength for her size. Her career ended in the mid 1950s where she lay idle tied up near the mill at Echuca wharf. For a short time she was sold to Mildura but fortunately the Apex Club raised funds to buy her back to be a reminder of the riverboat days at the Port. She was lifted out for safekeeping into Hopwood Gardens where she remained on show for nearly 25 years. After restoration by Port shipwright Keven Hutchinson OAM, she returned to the waters of the Murray River on Sunday March 4th 1984 at 5.20pm. After further restoration, in 1985 the Prince and Princess of Wales re-commissioned PS ADELAIDE in a ceremony on their tour of the region. The world's oldest wooden hulled paddle steamer still operating as a passenger vessel today built in Echuca in 1866. It is often considered the flagship of the operational fleet of the Port of Echuca given its age and known provenance to Echuca. The Adelaide is an iconic symbol of the riverboat timber and cargo trade that worked on the Murray River from the mid 1800s. Remarkably, PS ADELAIDE still operates with its original Fulton and Shaw engines.Composite hull, side wheeler with two single cylinder steam engines, producing a total of 36hp. Currently cream and burgundy moored at the Echuca Wharf. 49 passenger capacity.P.S. Tait (Red Rattler) train bound for Mordialloc at McKinnon Road level crossing, McKinnon Railway Station, Frankston line, c. Feb. 1964 The level crossing is the old McKinnon Rd. level crossing right at Mckinnon Railway Station on the Melbourne-Franston line. It no longer exists as the level crossing was amongst the first to be removed in the State Govt. grade separation programme c 2015. The line now runs under Mckinnon Rd in a cutting that holds the new station as well. The folding metal lattice gates were the only ones of their kind in Victoria and fairly rare anywhere else in Australia as well.Digital TIFF file Scan of 35mm Ilford FP3 black and white transparencyfrankston line, george coop collection, level crossing, mckinnon railway station, mckinnon road, mordialloc, red rattler, tait train -

A T-class diesel-electric locomotive can bee seen through the window hauling a Tait train. Also advertising on the buildings facing passing train passengers including 'Dialyn's Theatre Shoppe for Nightingale Tightlets & Leotards'. This is not a conventional suburban Tait ‘Red Rattler’ service. It may have come from Lilydale where trains from both Warburton and Healsville were combined to continue the run into Melbourne, a normal service for them at the time. It is unusual as the train is hauled by a diesel which also suggests it may have been a special excursion train from either of those two towns. Normally these combined trains would be hauled by two swing door ‘Red Rattlers’ motor coaches from Lilydale, the start/end of electric service. Photograph, Steam locomotive K-185 at the coal hopper, Echuca Railway Station, c.Aug. 1963
THE ECHUCA COALING STAGE. Locomotives would stop alongside to receive coal dropped into their tenders from small overhead rail mounted tipping trays. Water could be obtained from either the elevated tank at one end or the connected standpipe at the opposite end. Locomotive firebox contents could be dumped into pits between the rails from locomotives once they were carefully positioned above them. Such locomotives then could move onto the Engine Shed area for overnight parking. Firebox fires would be re-lit when the locomotive was next needed in a day or so.Digital TIFF file Scan of 35mm Ilford FP3 black and white negative transparencygeorge coop collection, echuca railway station, k-185, k-class steam locomotive (vr newport workshops), railway workshop -
