This book is a sixth grade reader which all Victorian students would have read during the 1940's. The book is made up of poems and stories, some which are still known and told today. Some pages have drawings that relate to the story of poems. This is historically significant due to showing what children read during the 1940's in schools across Victoria. Also it is a good comparison to what grade six children read now. Therefore it has good interpretation value and would be good in local school exhibitions. The names on the book indicate that this book came from a local famil, the Johnson and was read to two children of that family which gives this good social history. Some of the pages have had their pictured colored in by the student and words that have been underlined. These could have been harder words for the students to learn and seem advanced for grade six children to read. This book was supplied by the Victorian Education Department for all Grade 5 students at Government schools. Each student had one including the local family who passed it on to another family member. Information - J.Bamford: 'In the late 1930's and 40's there were two parts of the Mitcham State School. The Bubs and grades 1 to 3 were in a building on Mitcham Road that was near the laneway behind the shops,and grades 4 to 8 were further down Mitcham Road. There were several houses on Mitcham Road to the left of this photograph, with parkland behind.. The left rear of the school also joined the park. The right side of the school joined Sampson's orchard, which went down as far as Springfield Road. This road was then called the Stock Route because that was what it was back then.' These photos are a pictorial and historical record of the early construction days of the Kiewa Scheme and a personal record of the photographer, Ronald George Thorn, of his days as an engineer with the SECV. He worked in the Kiewa area as a cadet engineer from 1948 to 1950 and then in 1953 - 56 as an electrical engineer grade 2.These photographs tell the story of one man's involvement in the construction of the Kiewa hydro electric scheme during his employment with the SECV.A foolscap sized sheet of light weight cardboard with nine small black and white photographs pasted on side 1 and eight same sized black and white photographs pasted onto side 2. Gray's Allwood Nurseries was the largest orchard in the district and exported domestically and internationally. At one time the Hurstbridge railway station held the record for the number of apples sent away in one season. This photo forms part of a collection of photographs gathered by the Shire of Eltham for their centenary project book, "Pioneers and Painters: 100 years of the Shire of Eltham" by Alan Marshall (1971).
