An unsuccessful attempt was made to set up a silkworm industry at Mt Alexander, to be an occupation for ladies of the district as well as to introduce the silk industry to Victoria. An attempt by women to enter the business world was beaten by difficulties: (1). Road access to the property (2). Heavy frost damage to mulberry plants. (3). Disease of silkworms. (4). Lack of quantity of leaves. (5) drought and rabbits. Experiments proved silk harvested and woven was superior to overseas products, but the venture was defeated by the climate and the surviving trees were relocated to Corowa NSWA relic of the far-sighted venture by the Victorian Ladies Sericulture Co, promoted by the charismatic Mrs Bladen Neill , who was anxious to generate employment opportunities for women..A dead branch from a mulberry tree grown at Sericulture Farm, Mt Alexander, in the early 1870s. This long limb's bark has cracked with age, forming a pattern of brown cracks. Remnants of smaller branch axilla are clearly visible. An inscription on paper is pasted around the branchTyped: "Part of a limb of a mulberry tree from the Sericulture Farm on Mt Alexander which was started by Mrs Bladen-Neill in early 1870s, finally closing in 1878. The two storey house is 'Ardcloney. Dr. William Faulkner, formerly from Queensland, had it built for his residence in 1911. The property also included a garage, which accommodated his automobile and accommodation for his chauffeur. Owners in more recent times were Keith Campbell, who previously owned 'Willowbank' in the old Broadmeadows township and Bill Landeroo a former Victorian State MP. After a quiet period, interest in bookplates in Australia began to increase in the early 1970s, Entrepreneurial art and book collectors such as Edwin Jewell and others commissioned multiple Bookplate designs from a range of well known fine artists. At a 1997 meeting in Melbourne of the Ephemera Society of Australia Edwin Jewell and others announced the formation of the Australian Bookplate Society. William PATTISON (1823-1895) was great grandfather of donor and driver of the first train at Sandridge, 1854. Digital image scanned from copy photograph & donated to the society by Keith PATTISON, great grandson of first Sandridge train driver then reclaimed for reproduction. Lloyd Charles Brind, born 7/09/1882, entered Ballarat College 6/02/1893. This book was donated back to the school by Mr McCallum, July 1964 and added to the Ballarat College Library. This may be Mr R A McCallum, parent of school during the 1960s and father of Keith (1964), Stuart (1967) and Peter (1974). At some stage it has been stamped with the Tam O'Shanter Ballarat Book Club stamp. It also has a handwritten signature on the title page and half-title page 'N. V. The Australian Air League was formed in 1934, in an era when Australian Aviators such as Sir Charles Kingsford-Smith, Charles Ulm, Bert Hinkler, Sir Ross and Keith Smith and others were household names and heroes.
