Yields information about the 1962 proposal of the SEC to closure the Ballarat tramway system.Newspaper - The Courier - Saturday 5 Feb. 1962, 28 pages with an article on the front page titled "Ballarat to Lose Trams if SEC Edict Stands". Advises that a formal notice by the Minister for Electrical Undertakings Mr. Reid was tabled the previous day after the SEC served the notice upon the Minister. At the time of the report, no date had been advised. The article reports that the Council will consider the matter at its meeting of the following Monday night. The SEC made this agreement with respect to the operation of tramways in Ballarat and Sebastopol in 1929, though the SEC did not formally take over operation until 1934.Yields information about the 1929 agreement between the SEC, The City of Ballaarat and the Borough of Sebastopol about the operation of tramways in Ballarat.Original copy and photocopy of an SEC made 17/11/1929 of the "Agreement between the SEC, City of Ballaarat and Borough of Sebastopol" re tramways at the time of the operation transfer of the tramways from ESCo to the SEC. Yields information about the incidents/accidents that can occur on a street tramway system - collisions resulting in the rare virtual total demolition of a tram in Ballarat.Newspaper clipping from The Courier, front page, Thursday, 17 September 1970 with photo, of the collision between No. 20 and a semi trailer the previous evening in Victoria St. that wrecked No. 20. Gives quotes from eye witness, gives name of tram driver, Ian Maxwell Tierney, who jumped from tram before the collision, said the only passenger who was not injured was Miss Maree Bernadette Matthews about 17 of Reid St. Ballarat and the truck driver Ronald Frederick Cox 35 of Hickman St. was trapped in the cabin of the truck for some time. Accident happened about 7.30pm. Photo (see also item 1089 for print) shows by a white arrow where the woman was sitting. Also has a small inset photo in the top left hand corner showing a single truck tram. Quotes Dianne Smith, Ballarat Tourism Executive Director. Headed "GOLD TRAM" and titled "Sparkling reminder of a golden past", about the launch of the Gold Tram 45, by the Mayor, David Vendy the previous day at the tram depot. Yields information about the relocation of the bogie trams from the old SEC depot to the new BTPS depot in the gardens and partly how it was done.Newspaper cutting from The Courier, Ballarat, titled "Trams roll again", Wednesday 19/7/1972 of tram 40 in Wendouree Parade behind John Withers Land Rover and tram 38 on the temporary access track the previous day, while being moved into the new depot. Functional object - Fare Token, Electric Supply Co. of Vic (ESCo), 1913
Demonstrates aspects of the Ballarat Tramways fare system at the time of the one man trams, tokens which could be pre purchased by travellers and save time when boarding trams. See notes on file re these eg Reg Item 1801.Fare token- 2d - 21mm diameter - green celluloid - with "B.E.T." in large capitals on front centre of token and words "Ballarat Electric Tramways 1913" on circumference. On reverse in large font "2" and a small font "D" at top of the two - indicating token had a value of two pence. Extract from A. Bradley "The Golden City and its Tramways" about tokens and why. "The ESCo worked out its procedures from its own experience. A "pay as you enter" system was used on city-bound cars, and a "pay as you leave" system on outward-bound cars. On Sundays during busy periods this was reversed on the Gardens lines, but conductors were still required on this line to cope with the heavy summer holiday traffic. Trams 1 to 18 were altered by altering the end seating, placing gates on doorways and "pay as you enter" and "pay as you leave" signs. Once on board, passengers paid their coins into a farebox mounted behind the driver, which was fitted with glass windows and mirrors to enable the driver to see the coins slide into the box - a form of "moral check on passengers". Regular passengers could buy pink or green celluloid tokens at a discount price, to save the motorman having to issue tickets and give change." Photocopy of a bound (comb binding) report titled, "Tram Feasibility Study for the Ballarat Tourism Board". Was originally 96pages, has been photocopied using both sides of an A4 sheet. Stored as a 48 pages with a metal fold back clip to hold sheets together. Front cover featured a photograph of ESCo No. 1. Contains information on research design, data analysis, results, conclusions and recommendations, list of references, exhibits, tables, data summaries, copies of newspaper items and background material. Historically significant for at the time it demonstrated aspects of the evolution of Ballarat Tramways and yields information about the formation of the tramways, the Councils viewpoint and has a strong association with the Mayor of the time.Twenty two page book, produced by photocopying, side stapled and bound with a red plastic binding, titled "Mayor's Special Report Ballarat Tramways", dated 20 September 1971 for presentation to the City of Ballaarat Council Meeting 27 Sept. 1971 and signed by the Mayor, J.A.Chisholm. Note pages 18 and 19 have been reversed. Comprises: Page 1 - map (image 1829i1) - of Ballarat (Ballaarat) showing the horse tram routes in red (appear to have been drawn in with a red pencil). Note the Sebastopol route terminates at Rubicon St. Page 3 - letter to the City Councillors from the Mayor Page 4 - Outline of the "The Ballarat Tramway System" Pages 5 - 7 - Conditions for tendering the horse tram system within the City of Ballarat" Pages 8 - 11 - Specifications and Agreement for the Ballaarat Tramways (horse trams). pages 12 - 19 - Memorandum of Agreement with the British Insulated Wire Company (later ESCo) Page 20 - Copy of letter from the Secretary of the SEC to the Minister of Fuel and Power, dated 10 Sept. 1971 advising of the formal abandonment of the Ballarat and Bendigo tramway systems. Photo of a privately operated bus in Swanston St. Melbourne at the intersection of Bourke St., with Foys (Foy and Gibson) department store in the background. Bourke St. trams yet to be built. Photo taken 10-4-1950. Also has the Cosmopolitan Hotel in the background. From information provided by the Bus and Coach Society of Victoria: "The bus outside Foys belongs to Lew Page who was one of the multiple operators on Route 1 in 1950 ( he also had one bus on Route 2) which was four years before they amalgamated to form Melbourne - Brighton Bus Lines. The bus is a Reo with a Giles body. Giles Motor Body Works was based in New Street Brighton and built bodies for commercial vehicles but not a lot of buses. Their half a dozen post-war buses mainly went to operators in Routes 1 and 2. Being on Route 1, the bus would have been red and cream." Copy of an article by Neville Gower, published in "Somersault", the magazine of the Signalling Record Society of Victoria, May 1988. Describes location of loops in horse drawn era compared to those of the ESCo area 1905 to 1934, with reference to changes made to ESCo Loops by SECV upon rehabilitation of the system, based upon changes on BTM's collection of staffs. Yields information about the history of Bendigo's trams, tramways and the trammies and their stories. Has a strong association with the businesses in Bendigo.Newspaper feature section from the Bendigo Advertiser of April 13, 1972, an eight page feature on the closure of the Bendigo tramways. See also item 277.2 - photocopy of this item. Features history of the Bendigo trams, the services, personal stories, photos and advertisements from local commerce - published Thursday April 13, 1972. Tram services closed the following Sunday. The 8 page feature in a single sheet of newsprint, with one half printed upside down to the other half. Includes numerous photos of the trams, one of the last staff photo, and item called "1927 and all that" with the memories of Basil Miller, Senior Traffic Inspector. 2nd copy of the feature section added 12/10/2007 ex Graeme Breydon. 1038.1- copy of the Bendigo Advertiser of April 13 1972 - 16 pages, including the supplement. The supplement section has been "torn" down the middle of the single sheet. On pages and 11, there are other tramway stories - page 2 - a photo of a CRB worker cutting pavement with a motorised saw and on page 11 a item about the White Hills Progress Association opposing the retention of the Bendigo trams - "childish and impracticable".
